(9/28/23 upgraded to 4 stars) By now, I'm well-acquainted with machines in this price range, having owned several different brands over the years. This review doesn't account for longevity and if it doesn't last the requisite 12 months I'll adjust it to one star, but for now here it is as compared to several other brands in its price range. What's good: Its best feature is the nice long, one piece frothing wand. Simple to clean, works great, and easy to froth milk in whatever glass you wish, which negates the need for separate vessels and repouring. I also like that it ramps up gradually, which allows to open the valve, expel the water, and get the milk underneath all in a single smooth motion. Also, this wand is metered near perfectly. It both heats the milk and produces nice tight foam that yields piping hot cappuccino. Definitely the best wand/frothing of any machine I've owned. What sucks: I've given up hope that this machine will ever produce a nice dry puck. Normally I'd judge a machine by the espresso it brews and let an issue like this slide, but in this case the grounds are so saturated that I have to deal with anything from goopy black tar to completely wet mess that spills everywhere when the filter is removed. It's so bad that I have to keep a container of rinse water next to the machine and dip the Portafilter in it to remove the gloppy mess so it won't clog up my septic tank. The pressure gauge on this machine is utterly useless. Yeah, the needle moves around and stuff, but it doesn't read anything useful, and doesn't read at all when steaming. Bummer because that was a selling point for me. Consider the pressure gauge a decoration. There ya go. It gets the job done, and it's definitely ahead of many other machines thanks to its upgraded frothing wand, but at the end of the day it's just another fish swimming in a sea of mediocrity. Hopefully, my final machine in this price range. If you're considering this as a replacement for a similar unit, do yourself a favor and just buy the damned Gaggia Classic Pro now. Updated 10/12 to 5 stars: 5 Stars for Casabrews Customer Service and support. Received the 1st machine, had some challenges and Casabrews replaced it immediately. Good: Build and with some stainless steel parts. Has all the basics needed for a good budget semi-atuo setup with steam wand that's a great plus. Small footprint and takes little counter space. Does what it says. Follow the steps in the manual and will give great espresso shots. If your puck comes out wet and soggy, check your grind - I get perfect shots with my brand pre-ground coffee and after adjusting the setting on my grinder, got great results with fresh beans. Manual also guides to solve for any under and over extraction issues. While extraction time can be changed, I found factory settings are great for me. Minor - not so good: The machine is light but the wand/filter attachment is tight(as should be) resulting in the moving the machine and requiring holding the machine down from moving. The vibration of the pump is not too much but enough to make your cup or shot glass dance across the base - so you have to hold it in place or it'll go right off the surface. The pressure gauge and cup warmer on the top are not perfect. The gauge doesn't show pressure readings but just a zone where the needle should land when extracting your shot. It helps to know your process may need some tweaks if the needle is outside the ideal zone. Cup warmer area is of no use either as it will never get hot enough to warm up a cup which I think maybe due to safety reasons so someone doesn't burn their hand. I know I would've if it was a hot surface while holding down the machine to attach the wand. Lastly, the tamper spoon stick is plastic and not ideal - I measure by weight so not an issue and have been tamping with it just okay, but will get a good metal tamper. ... show more

I bought this as a substitute while my espresso machine was getting repaired. I cannot live with out a machine in the house but I didn't want to spend a bunch of money. This was perfect for that. the crema was similar to my high end machine. The frothing takes much longer on this than my other machine but it was fine once I got the hang of it. ... show more
