  • Nice bright screen - QA needs help
I installed this (myself) in a 2017 Expedition. Overall and for the price it's a pretty nice unit, but as is typical with a lot of China-sourced electronics, the fit, finish, and software quality are significantly lacking. Examples: - Came out of the box with minor scratches on the plastic. My kids will likely do worse to it over time so it didn't bother me that much. - The slot for the SD card looks like it had been gouged out with a butter knife (see pic). The slot still works but it looks sloppy. - The unit has a switch for when the screen is "shut" that is supposed to stop playback. I had to add a small shim (I used a self-adhesive furniture 'dot' that you use to keep cabinets from slamming) because it doesn't close tight enough to press the button. - One reason I bought this unit was that it claimed to have a "Video Out". This is listed in the manual on the vendor's website, but it does NOT exist. In the printed manual I received, the section mentioning this is covered with a white sticker. - The radio transmitter (for audio) is weak, but I didn't expect much and wired it in to an Aux input. - The audio level coming out is very low, even at 100% volume and the radio up all the way. I had to add a pre-amplifier to make sound on the highway audible. If at all possible you should wire the power such that it turns on/off with the car or radio. It draws 600-800mA during playback, so left running it will kill your battery in a few days. With the screen shut, the current drops to 20mA, but if yours is like mine it won't always turn off. Pros: - The screen is huge. People in the back row have no issues seeing and HD content looks great. - Relatively lightweight and mounting isn't difficult. - Playback options via USB, SD, or HDMI. - Restarts from where it left off when power is removed/restored. - The light is actually pretty nice. It's bright enough to be useful, but not glaring. There's an on/off button for it, and it doesn't have any problems or weird behavior when the lights 'fade to off' in my car. - Price is good Cons: - The remote sucks. Buy a cheap universal remote or two for the car. - The speakers are absolutely useless. They should have saved the money and given a video out. - The sound output is very low over both radio and the Aux out. - There is no video output despite the online manual stating it exists. - The software is terrible. If it doesn't understand a file or has issues with a USB drive, there is no helpful message (it just does nothing). - It's huge and completely obscures the rear-view mirror when in use. (I knew that going in, but it may be an issue for some). A few other notes: - The actual circuit board is extremely small, but looks somewhat hackable. There is a 2nd HDMI port and wiring for VGA on it, though I'm not sure if the software will let you use them. There are also what look like direct connections to the processor, so in theory the software could possibly be updated via JTAG or some other interface. - The connector for wiring is nice and slim, but if you're doing this yourself make sure you have the tools to fish cables through the headliner and tight places. I've done a lot of car audio/video work but am by no means a professional. This installation took about 6 hours from unboxing to finished including probing/finding all the lighting, switched power, and audio cabling routes in my car. If you DIY, do your homework. Find wiring diagrams and body panel removal instructions for your car, etc. If in doubt, hire or at least consult with a pro. ... show more

  • Installation mayhem
I may come back to update my rating once (and if) I can finish the installation. There needs to be another 'Rate Feature' -- Installation. I'm wondering how many people who rated this high either did not do their own installation or are basing their ratings solely on the performance of the device. I hope it's the latter, because this has been a real pain to install, and I'm not all the way there yet! Here we go: 1. The information (and the installation instructions) fail to mention 3 more wires - black, red, and yellow. I had to go to the Q&A to find out what these wires are for and how to use them. Turns out they are for the unit's light (which, by the way, is also missing from the device description). So you don't have to search beyond here - black is ground, red is constant power, and yellow can tie into the dome light for an open door. 2. The install guide shows pictures of the RCA connectors -- all the same. When, actually, they aren't. 3 are female, 3 are male. The yellow (video) input and output ones both say 'V IN' on them, so I hope I am connecting it up correctly. 3. The 6 bolts (diagrams show only 4) to mount to the metal plate are very short. There are no guides to line up the holes, so use your magic to try to line them up. As for me, I delayed my installation and bought longer ones to install for guides, then I'll tighten down the other 4 holes, followed up by the last 2 guide holes once the 4 are in. That's the plan at least. 4. Mounting -- Ever installed a ceiling fan where you're trying to connect the wires, tuck them away, and put the fan in place all at the same time? This is similar, except it is WORSE. There is a lot of wiring, and no cavity to hide them in. if you have a sunroof, this makes it even more fun because tucking your wiring up above may (will) get in the way of the sunroof's operation. 5. Power -- I do not know what the gauge is of this wire, but if there is a unit of measure by hair thickness, this would fall into that category. I had 0% success in determining the amount of current draw this device is rated at, but based on the size of the wire, I hope it's in the low mA range or else it's going to melt like chocolate on a hot dash. I'm really hoping that everything works once it's in, because I'd really hate to have to take it down after my impending circus performance. As stated, I may update this review once I get the longer bolts and safely have the wires tucked away and have actually tried it out. I'm hoping to at least bump this up to a 3. UPDATE: I got the longest bolts available from Home Depot, putting one in 2 opposite corners. I also bought bolts (again, Home Depot) that were about twice as long as the ones that came with the unit. Able to tuck, slide, push, press... then got the bolts started and it's all installed and working! Video looks OK (not very good if at too much of an angle). The six small rubber covers for the bolt holes do not stay in at all -- not a big deal, just something I noticed. Updated this to a '3' given the successful finalization and that it works. ... show more

  • Picture is great, but other features not so much.
Installed in a 2010 Tundra to replace a broken DVD console. Luckily previous installers left material for this one to mount which made it easier. Picture quality is great so far and my daughter is really enjoying it. I have had it installed for 3 weeks so time will tell. Another plus is that this one regular HDMI input instead of mini. Negatives I have encountered. Video output does not work via RCA. Audio output worked fine to my headunit but useless to me if I can't output video to headunit. Another negative is the dome light does not work with my door signal. ON/OFF works, but not with the door signal. The third negative is the IR signal. Terrible signal. Static if not sitting directly in front of the tv. Sitting driver or passenger side of the same seat, static. I am now using a Bluetooth transmitter to headphones and that works much better. I never tried the FM output so I don't know how strong that is. Overall I am satisfied for the price, just wish all of the features worked well out of the box. ... show more
