Description

Capstar (nitenpyram) is a fast-acting flea treatment tablet for use in dogs and cats that starts killing fleas in only 30 minutes. A single dose of Capstar kills 90% of adult fleas within 4 hours for dogs and 6 hours for cats, ridding your pet of these pesky parasites. Capstar is for dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens 2 pounds of body weight or greater and 4 weeks of age or older. Dosing Capstar is available in 2 dosages: Cats and dogs from 2 to 25 pounds (11.4 mg) Dogs from 25.1 - 125 pounds (57 mg) Administration To give Capstar tablets, place the oral tablet directly in your pet’s mouth or hide it in food. Use with Other Medications If your pet is currently receiving a monthly or longer-lasting flea preventative medication but still becomes infested with fleas, it is safe to administer Capstar to address a flea infestation. Capstar may also be used together with other products, including heartworm preventatives, corticosteroids, antibiotics, vaccines, deworming medications, and shampoos. Re-infestations Capstar kills adult fleas on dogs and cats, offering quick relief for your furry friend. While Capstar works fast to kill adult fleas and alleviate a current infestation, a subsequent preventative solution is recommended to prevent future re-infestations from any existing flea eggs and larvae in the environment. If you notice more fleas have found their way onto your dog or cat in the days following treatment, continue treating your dog or cat with Capstar with up to one dose per day. Important Safety Information Capstar is safe to use in puppies and kittens 4 weeks of age and older, and 2 pounds of body weight or greater. Capstar really DOES work, and extremely quickly! In May, we had tried another "Cap" brand, and that was an utter failure. On the other hand, Capstar took effect before even 30 minutes had passed, and on day 2, it was still working great. Today, day 3, we re-dosed our cats, and it's amazing how calm and happy they are. The brand we had tried in May, was the same brand we used last year, and successfully. We had thought that the fleas this year must have been resistant to nitenpyram, since the May dosing was ineffective. But, no, I don't know what happened to the less expensive brand this year, but we won't try it again. Our cats' health is certainly worth a few more dollars! ... show more

I've been using these pills for over 15 years to tackle flea infestations in my home, and they’ve always worked effectively. One common misconception I see is people complaining about fleas returning. While Capstar is excellent for eliminating live fleas on your cat, it’s not a long-term solution. About 10 to 20 minutes after administering the pill, you’ll notice your kitty becoming a bit restless, and you’ll see the fleas literally jumping off and dying. To truly rid your home of these pests, it’s essential to follow up the initial treatment with Capstar using a topical medication like Frontline. Cheaper alternatives often prove ineffective, leading to a quick return of fleas. Additionally, don’t forget to treat your environment—foggers can be very effective, but make sure your pets are out of the house during the process. One final tip I wish I had known during my first encounter with fleas: remember to treat your car, too, or you may end up bringing them back into your home. ... show more

Our three cats have had fleas for a while. Attempts to rid them of fleas have not been effective. Twice daily fine toothed combings have collecting disturbing amounts of fleas. Topical treatments between the shoulder blades were also not as effective as we had hoped. With no adverse reactions appearing in any of the reviews, as well as, the advertisers claim that this treatment was safe for kittens- I purchased these tablets. Prior to administering the tablets we read the instructions on the outside of the box. (See image) About fifteen minutes after administering one tablet to each of our three cats- as if the fleas were attacking each cat at once- each cat began scratching and biting and licking at different parts of their bodies. This went on for quite a while. Then, one of our cats, our “Ragdoll, had an adverse reaction. He began to run around the apartment, to vocalize, to salivate, to have an increased heart rate, to tremble, to pant, to have difficulty breathing, & to salivate. It was disturbing to witness. I dialed the tn on the packaging, and surprisingly/thankfully we spoke to a representative by the name of Oz, she was calm, helpful, reassuring- wonderful- us? Not so much. After a few hours, as Oz, had advised, their symptoms diminished, and overnight all three appear to be back to normal. FYI, this morning, unbeknownst to us, yesterday, we discovered that there was an additional information sheet, literally, stuck to the inside of the box. And, lo and behold, there is an adverse reaction warning. (It does appear that the product worked effectively; however, according to the adverse reaction warning- have that cat carrier ready in case an emergency vet visit becomes necessary. Thanks, again Oz ! Addendum: The next day, Thurs. Mar. 28, 2024, right as I was finishing up this review, I received a call from Lindsay, another representative from Capstar, she was following up to verify whether or not our cats were ok- they were, and are. The back of the package says, "Daily dose." So I decided to give her one every day, and she stopped itching. Plus, I saw no more fleas on her. HOWEVER! My cat did get fatigued and had a runny stool for 'almost' two days. I would proceed with caution when giving this to your fur baby.
