  • Compact, versatile, easy to install Windows 10 and Linux Mint 20.2 (Uma)
Style: Printer
I'm writing this review not only because I'm very pleased with the printer (at ~$80), but frankly because I'm very surprised by the number of people having trouble installing it (I found it painless): - Win10: a. USB installation was trivial, automatically detected and installed by Windows; b. I also installed it as a network printer via Ethernet to router - again no issue using the Win10 wizard; I did not play with the Wifi (not needed in my set-up), but I did verify that the WPS process seems to at least initiate properly as per instructions (attached) - Linux Mint 20.2 Uma: it does need the UFRII LT Ver5.00 Driver - Canon hosts it (make sure you "register" the driver once you install it - the install script prompts for it). After that, both USB and Network via Ethernet connections were straightforward. [Also requires Ghostscript - which was already installed] Other: - I did not try connecting any Smartphone or Mac - Non OEM toner cartridges are plentiful and inexpensive (and include the drum), but the starter cartridge is rated for at least 900 pages and should last a while (and Laser cartridges don't dry up unlike Inkjet) - It's also quite fast with good print quality (maybe just a touch on the "light" side) ... show more

  • good value, works with MacOS
Style: Printer
A fast, cheap monochrome laser. It works well with MacOS and was a breeze to set up with a wired connection. And there's a major bonus considering the price range: the "starter" toner kit has a page-rating comparable to their regular toner purchase. Canon supports a number of MacOS versions for this printer (included some EOL ones like "Mountain Lion"). I downloaded drivers from the Canon website-- the recent date on them indicates they're still actively maintained. This was for my older system running MacOS Sierra; it's quite possible newer MacOS already bundles the drivers. Once you have the drivers and the printer is on the network, it's literally 3-4 clicks to add the printer, select the type, and set it as the default. No other software needed. This model has a "alternate" feed right above the main tray, for printing envelopes, labels, etc. Note the slightly cheaper monochrome ImageCLASS does not have this feature. The printer is really fast coming out of sleep mode and generating that first print. Faster than the massive office-style HP Pagewide it replaces. In fact, my only quibbles are very minor: * it's a little loud when powered on / plugged in * the paper tray doesn't hold a full ream * it looks sort of cheap But considering how inexpensive it is, all of these things are completely acceptable. I'll also note, for most printing, B&W is just fine, and color is much much more expensive (whether laser toner or ink). If you don't specifically need to print color, I highly recommend sticking to monochrome. If you've ever bought a set of color cartridges (or toners) when all you usually do is print black&white, you'll know exactly what I mean. I first came to know Canon as a camera company, but have since come to appreciate their printers, of which I've owned several. This is my first Canon laser, and I'm pleased with it. Highly Recommended. ... show more

  • Works great, installation was difficult on Mac
Style: Printer
We had a wired version of this printer for a year or two and it worked great. We just hated having to plug it into our computers every time we wanted to use it, so we decided to purchase this one for the wireless capabilities. This one is a bit bulkier than our old one, but still compact enough to not be obtrusive. Pros: It works great and hasn't had any issue disconnecting from wi-fi since the initial setup. I love the double-sided print feature since we lacked that on our wired printer before. It also responds quickly once I send a document to the printer. Based on my previous experience with the wired version, you'll find that the toner lasts a long time. We're printing shipping labels a lot and we still only change it out once a year at most. Cons: Setup was a bit complicated. I'm a techie and was using a Mac to setup for first use - I typically have no issues with these types of things. It took a while to find the correct drivers on the website (this hasn't been an issue previously with the wired version, even if downloading from the website) - there are several options and the instructions that come with the printer are useless. I eventually found a guide on the website that helped a bit. After about 20 mins, I finally got this thing installed and setup for wireless use, but it definitely wasn't easy. There's a driver for the printer itself and then you have to find the wireless setup. I'm sure using the CD to install on a PC would have been a whole lot easier, they just had to make it difficult for us Mac users. I got this up and running on my husband's PC in a few mins, but that's because the wireless part had already been setup by me on the Mac at that point. Another issue is that it doesn't print as dark as the old printer. So to test, I switched out the toners with one from my wired printer since they use the same kind - my aftermarket toner prints a lot darker than the Canon OE cartridge that comes with this. Not a huge deal since we're mostly just printing postage labels or random personal documents, but you may want to purchase a better cartridge. This is just a pet peeve, but you'd think that it would give you the option of selecting the tray to use if you want to keep more than one type of paper in the printer at a time. It says that it'll pull from the bottom tray in all the documentation, even if something is in the multi-purpose tray, but that's not true. It pulls from the multi-purpose tray every time if something is in there.Given this, I don't see the point of having two trays. ... show more
