  • What? No USB cable
I can't believe they don't include the USB cable that is required inorder to use the product. Thats like selling a car without wheels! Furthermore, network setup is not possible without purchase of a print server. As for performance, I won't know until I receive the USB cable and print server (another 5-10 day wait, argh!). Even if the performance of this printer/scanner is perfect, I will not change my star ratting because of the lack of the USB cable. Update: after having to drive 90 miles round trip to nearest Bestbuy for a USB cable that should have been included with the product (our local Wal-Mart or Target did not carry this cable) I have the following to say: 1) print quality is very good 2) product construction is very cheap,a couple of plastic pieces have broken off already. I expected better from a company that makes top of the line products. My next printer will more than likely be an HP printer again. Update: I have been using this printer for over a year now. It still prints fairly well. Funny thing though, since the third month of use the red error light has been lit telling me that the toner cartridge is empty and needs to be replaced... 7 months later; I'm still printing from the same toner cartridge... slick trick from cannon to get people to purchase toner cartridges before they need to, and they are not cheap.... I still do not recommend this printer... I have had better experiences with printers from HP and even Epson. UPDATE 9/29/13 The toner cartridge finally ran out of toner. I checked the price of replacement cartridges and found that they cost about as much as a new printer so I bought a new HP printer instead and guess what... it came with a usb cable, maybe cannon could learn to do like wise and not be so cheap. Not that I needed it, just making my point from my previous post above . ... show more

  • Great when it works
This has been a very frustrating purchase. I think the reason these are so cheap is because the software and USB integration are so flaky. As a stand-alone copier it's wonderful. That's why I bought it and the laser copies are great. Connecting it to your computer is a different story altogether. I have XP Pro on an hp Pentium 4 3.2GHz and 2.5 GB of RAM. The first time I printed to it the printer could not be found and the driver suggested a cable might be disconnected. I don't think so. I believe it has something to do with installing the printer and then putting the PC into sleep mode before using it. The OS did not seem to "lock in" the printer drivers until I reinstalled them, shut the PC off and turned it back on. But the driver install process doesn't tell you to do that. Only then would it remember the new printer. Then after a few cycles of sleep mode over a few days it will again forget all about the printer. It's frustrating as I don't like having to boot up the PC every time I want to check email or a spreadsheet. This morning I tried scanning a few old photographs and no luck: "can't find device...a cable may be unplugged, etc." And this was right on the heels of successfully printing out some PDF downloads. Total exercise in tear-your-hair-out frustration. Maddening to the extreme that you have to hold its hand, reinstall drivers and gently coax this thing into doing its job. Shame on you, Canon. ... show more

  • Just ok
This printer is ok. It is a good value, but that is about it. I had to send the first one back and get a replacement. The first one didn't work for duplex (two sided printing). It ruined the paper. The second one works "ok." The scanner is low-res. The copier is ok. The printer is ok. All around, just an "ok" printer. I suppose for the price it would be hard to beat. But if you run an actual office, I recommend getting something better. I don't have a lot of confidence in this printer, and I wonder how long it will last. It just feels "cheap." Hard to describe, but I think you know what I mean. The worst part is the scanner. Do not buy this as a primary scanner. The color quality is just bad. I compared it side-by-side with a stand alone scanner and the quality was very noticeably different. Interestingly, the scanner was also a Canon brand, so it isn't a brand issue. They just put a very low quality scanner in this unit. It works great for black and white copies, but that is about it. Your color scans will look terrible, whether you realize it or not. ... show more

  • The Canon inks are a fortune and are easily replaced with generic brands
It's my mistake, ordering quickly, I didn't realize this didn't have a fax feature nor an option to print wirelessly from other devices. If that's an issue for you, please make note. What is not my mistake is the constant jamming this printed has given me. This is extremely problematic, particularly when I have a client in my office and we're all pressed on time. The Canon inks are a fortune and are easily replaced with generic brands, making no visible changes. Also, the printing of envelopes is quite a task setting up and jams even more, so I resort to hand writing or using my stamp. When changing density (darkness) during copying, it works fine, but resets back each time, so I end up wasting paper and ink many times as mostly, all copying requires a darkened density from the default setting. There is an Eco off after 5 minutes on non-use, which is hopefully saving me cost on electric and the life of the copy-light inside. Overall, this seems over-priced for a no thrills, basic laser printer that jams. If it didn't jam, I would recommend it. I think your money can be better spent with good research in reviews and shopping around. I used many Canon products and this is about the most mediocre of the brand I've encountered, ... show more
