I work at a major urban hospital. Several years ago I began experiencing pain in my right thumb joint and after x-rays, received a diagnosis of an arthritic, unstable CMC joint. My hospital's hand clinic custom fitted me with the hand splint in the photo on the right . Even with my "nice" hospital insurance, this still costed me $350. I wore it a lot, and it was definitely effective. The pain subsided, but I continued using it especially when texting on my cell phone. But, perhaps from stuffing it into my pockets or backpack, the splint cracked around the thumb opening. So, in the meanwhile I started wearing the soft brace instead....which is only 40% effective. The pain returned. However, I had challenges getting an appointment on the hand clinic again. On a lark, I searched Amazon for hand braces again and found this one. Some of the reviews indicated that patient's doctors (in areas which presumably don't have hand clinics) were suggesting this splint. I ordered it and have experienced a major reduction in pain, always when I wear it, and more and more when I don't wear it to the point I forget I have an issue. That indeed was a very productive search because this splint is much cheaper, more durable, and I would say about 90% as effective as the hand clinic's splint, though I think that splint was more protective. I'm also not sure how long the velcro on this splint will last. So far so good after a couple of months. Do consider this splint even though it's substantially more than the soft ones. I wear this brace mostly at night while I sleep and it has helped my pain immensely. I’ve worn it under gloves and it still gives me full use of my hand. It’s lightweight and free of restrictions. Can’t wait to try it out while I golf

    • Effective but…

These braces (I use left & right) are the best I’ve found to keep my CMC bone spurs from digging into the surrounding tissue while handling tools, etc. and reducing the inevitable pain. They stand up to water and grease and clean up pretty well when needed. They are also far less noticeable than the black Futuro braces that I also use when relaxing while reading or watching TV. They aren’t cheap but your insurance should cover them if you have the medical record to justify it. The only real negative is where the hard plastic rides between the thumb and the index finger. Over time, the flared thumb hole plastic digs into the tissue underneath, where the skin is thin and there is no fat to cushion it. It got really sore for me over time. I’ve had to cut adhesive cushions to wrap around the thumbhole completely, otherwise they work loose. Also, if you wear them a lot, a callus can develop where the plastic transitions to the straps from rubbing against the heel of the palm. Still, I don’t know of a better CMC brace if you still want to handle tools. Also, once you’ve got the straps tight, make a fist and adjust them back off a bit for your best fit. These braces allow work gloves to slide over them, giving a bit more support at the wrist and some padding overall. If you've got this condition, every little edge can take some stress off. These definitely help me avoid as much inflammation as I can while still living my life. Minus 1 star due to lack of padding where critical for daily use. ... show more

This brace kept me from reinjuring my cmj when I was doing a lot of landscaping work. After 6 months of using it when working, the pain in my cmj went away. It is waterproof, so you can leave it on while working in wet conditions or washing your hands.

This is why it’s worth the price: Pre-instruction before purchase. Comes with printed instructions/information. Better than all others I tried. Moving my thumb hurt from some artritis and maybe from a one night of ten-pin bowling. I tried sleeping with a carpal tunnel wrist stabilizer which helped but by afternoon the pain returned. I tried similar thumb products. This one is fantastic and Easy and comfortable, I can do anything and after a while I even forget it is on. I still only sleep with the carpal tunnel wrist stabilizer. I would have never bought this except my friend told me how it was the only one that works for him. He wears one on each thumb all day . ... show more

Pros: worth the cost. Simply put the design of this brace is what works for me. I have a lot of pain at the base of my thumb. Cant even open the fridge door without pain. This allows me to do that. It hits my palm on all the rights spots. Its not bulky. I can drive with it and cant even tell its on at times. My hand is mostly uncovered which I like the most. Other braces its like having a milk carton on your hand with your fingers sticking out. Not ok if you cook clean and paint like I do. I have also slipped on plastic glove over the brace so i can cook with it and not worry about getting it wet. Cons: this should come with extra velcro for this price. Dont get it wet because in my opinion it wont last. The part that hits the web of the palm is tight and hurts when it rubs.... which is whenever you move your hand. I will be glueing a piece of silicone there for some added cushion and comfort. Lastly what works for me is to tighten the strap closest the wrist and keep the strap next to the web of your thumb and index finger very loose. This allows for more mobility without pain. If you dab some type of vasaline there it also helps with friction burns. Make sure to keep the brace clean if you do that. All in all im very glad I bought it. This version is more expensive, but worth it. I’ve also tried to wear the version that is made with two types of material. It only took a week of wearing it before the black and gray material separated and this was from only wearing it at night and one time gardening. So far, I’m 2 weeks into the all gray version and it is so helpful managing the pain and it hasn’t separated. ... show more
