    • Superb sharpness, incredibly light
I've been testing this lens for two weeks, covering multiple sporting events. It is fast like every Canon super telephoto. It is also incredibly sharp, features superb image stabilization when its needed and has great center and corner sharpness wide open. But the most amazing thing about the lens is how light it is. It weighs less than seven pounds which is unheard of in a 400 f2.8 lens. The 1991 version of this lens was 14 pounds. Each iteration improved a little bit but the Version II IS was a great leap forward at under nine pounds, now the version III IS is under seven pounds. The feel when carrying the lens is extraordinary when you think about how heavy older models were. It balances nicely on a monopod and feels well-balanced in the hand when you handhold it, a much easier opportunity when it weighs so little. The only downside of the lens is the extremely high price of $12K (before taxes) where older 400mm's were once in the $7K range. But if you can afford this it is possibly the best lens ever made by Canon. ... show more
