The Camco Travel Toilet is a durable, comfortable option for camping, hunting, road trips and boat trips. The top features a larger seat size than other brands, with an increased bowl size. The fresh water holding tank uses a pump flush action to effectively fill and rinse the bowl of the toilet. The 5.3-gallon detachable holding tank seals firmly to stop escaping leaks and odors. The interior of the holding tank has a slick surface to make waste removal simple and efficient. The latch is spring-loaded for automatic re- attachment. Style: Premium 5.3-Gal Travel Toilet
I decided on this Camco 41544 toilet because of 1) the shape of the waste tank and 2) the seat height and 3) the piston pump (instead of bellows or battery operated). 1) Many reviews of the "square waste tank with inset handles" type toilets complained that solid debris had a tendency to get stuck in the inside corners of the tank. In my one-week testing of this toilet I found that crap can stick to just about any surface if you don't use enough water. Lesson learned: don't be stingy with water. Especially just before emptying the tank, I fill the bowl several times with clean water then flush (WITH THE LID DOWN). 0) Lesson 0 (before lesson 1). Only flush with the lid down. If there's enough water in the bowl to cover the sluice gate (aka flush valve), there's a chance that it will "burp" when you open the gate. After the first incident I didn't experiment with different sluice opening speed (which may have an effect on the splash). I simply reduced the odds of splash back to zero by closing the lid first. This rule should apply to any toilet of the sluice gate / sliding hatch variety. 2) The height of the seat on the 5.3 gallon model is about an inch shorter than our "normal" (Home Depot Glacier Bay) toilet at home. Although I don't see a need to build a platform for underneath, I might buy/make a tray that will allow me to strap down the toilet when in transit. 3) The piston flush system. Water is sprayed into the bowl by lifting and pushing down (slowly) on a handle at the rear corner (left side as you face the front of the toilet). The handle has a small rubber piston attached to the bottom and pumps water both on the up and down strokes. This allows you to very easily add as little or as much water to the bowl as you want. And with very little effort. I have mild arthritis in both hands and using the pump doesn't cause any pain whatsoever. When I first put the toilet into "test" service I noticed that water was slowly leaking around the "screw cap" that keeps the piston assembly in place. Not gushes, but a few drops with each pump cycle. Enough that it started dripping down the back of the toilet with each use. Instead of being silly and sending the toilet back as defective I unscrewed the cap and removed the piston assembly. Upon close examination I found that the large O-Ring seal inside the screw cap had a small crease in it. Probably not seated all of the way into its groove when first installed. So I sent an email to Camco about the problem. I never got a reply reply from Camco. Perhaps the happy face customer service person was on vacation. Within several days a package arrived with a replacement piston assembly, so they are paying attention. Bottom line is, the problem was resolved quickly. This part is irrelevant to what brand of toilet yo buy. This one came with two sample Camco branded drop-in TST odor control sachets. They look a lot like dishwasher detergent pods. I'd already decided to give Simple Green a try (1/2 cup in the clean water tank before filling) so I haven't bothered to use them yet. After a week of daily use there was no odor so I thought I'd found a cheap and eco-friendly method of controlling portable toilet ordors. And then I emptied the black water tank. The task of pouring it down our bathroom toilet made the bathroom smell like a ripe pit latrine (outhouse). Which is what it's supposed to smell like without fancy treatment chemicals, right? Next time I'll use the TST drop-ins and post an appropriate review with that product if I buy a pack of them.

Love this toilet. I use it in my horse trailer, tack room. It works great. I love that I can pull off the side of the road and I’ve got a potty anytime any place....and I don’t have to use nasty gas station or blue rooms baking in the sun bathrooms while I’m traveling!! There are some reviews that complain about leakage and spilling and pressure in the holding tank. Here’s my take. When you go pull the side lever to open the tank, do it slowly so that if there is pressure nothin pops back at ya!! (Come on folks just some good ole’ common sense) When I use the water flush pump I usually close the lid, it works great but it is manual pump and it can spray a little.... especially if you are overzealous and pump it fast, slow down and it works pretty darn good! I personally don’t put toilet paper in it, that way things beeakdown quicker and if your using a good amount of the “smelly stuff” (toilet enzyme deodorizer) When you go to empty the holding tank it pours right out no problem. I say overall I’m pretty impressed with the design and how easy it is to use. Remember it is plastic so you can’t manhandle it. With that said it’s in my tack room and I’m kinda hard on stuff. As far as what deodorizer is the best it’s really personal preference. I like the liquid blue stuff, it’s quick and I don’t have to wait for the pods to break down for it to start deodorizing, if it smells I just add some more. I give this toilet a double thumbs up!

So...if you're roughing it and looking for somewhere to do your business temporarily, this is great. My kid and me used this while I installed a toilet in our tiny home. Pros: Functional. Easy-ish to use. Height close to that of a natural toilet. Swivel spigot for dumping is convenient. Bowl is deep. Larger holding tank. No smell, at all! (Unless you're dumping, which is expected) You can use normal TP with this (YAY) but make sure it's the right kind, if it's too thick it might clog the dump pipe and cause disaster. Cons: Not too comfortable. Cleaning takes about 3 -4 wash and dump attempts. There is no "full" indicator so if you're the designated dumper, just hope and pray that no one does their business while it's full. The water pump is... Meh. It leaks and doesn't really do full bowl coverage BUT it works. Tbh, instead of using it, I normally just dump water straight into the bowl before use. Reconnecting it after so many dump attempts can be an eyeroll, but it's not SOOO bad. The dump valve (flushing mechanism) works smoothly 8/10 times. I'm a little bit of a rougher D-I-Y kind of girl, so this worked for me. Hope this helps. I would say 100% if you need a toilet that's stylish and you're willing to do the work, buy it.

this was my review on popupportal.com: I'm heading out for 4 days next week and as a first time cassette toilet owner i wanted to test the unit before getting out there. I finished testing Camco (41544) Portable Travel Toilet - i think i went Saturday morning to Wednesday morning. tl;dr: Positive experience! Get one :) DW would never be ok with me testing in the house, so i hid it in the shower of our downstairs bathroom. Everyone (dw, dd1, dd2) in the house uses the bathroom downstairs, but no one uses the shower, so the curtain stays closed - perfect hiding place and "testing site". I wanted to make sure it worked properly and that i could empty/clean out the cassette without issues. And since my pup isn't that big and i don't have an outside tent for the toilet, it would be in the pup, so I wanted to be sure it didn't smell. I used the orange TST pods - directions are vague - they say drop pod in and put in enough water to cover the pod. So that's what i did. I purposely didn't change a single bit of my regular routine - if i had to #1, i #1'ed, and if i had to #2, i #2'ed. I didn't try to conserve water with fewer pumps of the flush or try to use less (or special) toilet paper. The cassette did great. Sitting was a bit tight - I'm not tiny (6", 230#) and I'd prefer the seat to be longer/more oval, but it wasn't bad at all. The height is 16 inches off the floor - not regular toilet height but close enough and very comfortable. The overall size is compact - i had plenty of space to do my business in the shower :p Operating it was a breeze - everything worked exactly as advertised. I recommend laying a little tissue down first to make cleaning up easier. Open the hatch, take care of business, pump flush till it all goes down. if there are remnants you simply wipe with tp or lay the tissue down before. Don't worry about conserving water - flush flush. Shut the hatch, close the seat and seat cover. piece of cake. I'm a decent size fellow with a good appetite - lets just say I'm an ideal test subject. my cassette has a 5.3 gallon waste tank and i probably filled it half way in 4 days, maybe a little more. Keep in mind i didn't hold back on trips to toilet, TP, or flushing water. with a tank that size i think I'll be emptying it roughly at half full - i think it would get pretty heavy if it was totally full. the weight itself wouldn't bother me carrying it, but it would be awkward to empty at that weight. it's nice to have the extra capacity and that adds to the seat height too. Odors? none while not in use. no one in my family noticed a smell, even tho the cassette was just on the other side of the shower curtain when they were using the house loo. When i opened the hatch for business there was some ordor, but it was very muted. if someone was overly sensitive i think there are some additional pods you can get that help with scent - but over all i was so pleased at how little it smelled. the hatch works great keeping in smells, and after you flush and then close it, a little residue water pools on the hatch, which i imagine adds to the seal. Emptying - today i decided to end the test - it matched what i will be doing next week camping. i had watched videos (there are some english ones about boating thetfords that are spot on and very funny :) ) so i was prepared. i had a water container to put fresh water back in the tank to rinse it. overall it was smooth sailing. it smelled some, but again, very muted, not bad at all. having changed diapers for two girls for years i had zero issue with it. The material was also very broken down, hard to spot tissue bits, etc... very liquid. it all flowed out just fine. extend emptying tube, remove cap, flush the toilet, and dump while toilet flushes. the only thing i didn't do perfectly was keeping the tube end down as close to the toilet bowl water as possible and depressing the vent button immediately. there was some splashing (ew) but it was just a few drops and i won't make that mistake again ;-) Once the first main dump was done, i filled the tank with clean water, replaced the cap, and shook up the tank and re-emptied. i did that about 4 times - till the water ran clear. Wipe everything down with some tissue, and that was it - good to go. no one likes to deal with this stuff, but having the cassette is awesome. so far my best popup buy.

Very good for camping good for short term I upgraded eventually to a composting toilet due to the fact that I was off the grid for years, but if you’re a casual camper, we can camper maybe a week at a time this works very well

Update to original review. I bought this for use in my semi truck. Because I am in a 70 inch sleeper I did not save the original box (very large). Thanks to this unit I now sleep and work in a sewer. I separated it, emptied it, made sure it snapped back on and it has leaked all over my truck, seeping under the built in cabinets, under the sleeper, into storage compartments.... The top and bottom just don't stay seated in a moving vehicle. Stationary it might be fine if every time you separate it you test the seal with fresh water and don't move it around. I now have several puppy pads under it at all times and only use it AFTER opening the hatch, which is unpleasant. Also, it will pressurize in the black tank and explode contents all over the interior unit if you open it after usage and after closing lid. Lord help you if you open it with lid open. What can I say good about it? It IS taller but I'm buying my short thetford back. Better sore knees than life in a filthy sewer. I am trying a little duct tape around the outside of the bowl to maybe make it a tighter seal. I'm thoroughly disgusted and disappointed. I'd rather spend my time driving my truck than attempting to clean up after this thing. (Scream) Oh. It will be $180 and an entire day off work to pull things out, and disassemble built ins to fully clean. I can't do that til I get another because this happens REPEATEDLY no matter how hard I try to avoid it. Original review. This was to be a taller upgrade to the Thetford 2.5 gallon one that I've had in my Kenworth the last two years. It is comfortably taller but has a larger footprint than appears in the photos. Floor space is at a premium in a semi truck but it's workable. The benefits are worth it. Sturdy construction. The seat is larger and elongated to allow a female easy use. Flush is thorough. It arrived fully assembled and seals nicely greased. This should last me many years. I'm quite pleased.

Best water flush porta-potty/toilet in my book... better than the square ones. Does NOT tip when you lean to wipe! Looks kinda like a real one. Standard height(5.3gal) like a real toilet. Good flush. Deeper bowl than most... great for the men and for wiping clearance!! LOL US company based in NC! Yay! Thanks Camco!

I've owned this for 7 years. Works good, but the seat breaks. Broke on me about 5 years in, and I contacted camco. They sent me a new one. Now recently that seat broke. Contacted camco a few times. They ignored me. I guess I wore out my welcome. If they had a stronger seat it would be perfect.
