  • excellent home espresso machine
Style: Temp iQ
nd she is not a flatterer o does a ton of research before buying anything and always strives to buy the absolute best item for my needs. So needless to say I went down a rabbit hole on esspresso machines and was dismayed to find it was a cess pool of coffee snobs turning up their noses to bascially any machines that weren't professional grade $1000+ machines, and any coffee that wasn't roasted 20 minutes ago and ground immediately before making the esspresso... So after mentally filtering out all the people in that first category, and then all the people at the other end who would basically be happy drinking cold coffee from the pot on friday that they brewed on monday... I came to a happy middle ground of information. I got the non grinder version of the calphalon temp iq with the intention of ordering a separate grinder later due to height constraints in my kitchen. The machine has worked amazing so far and proved very easy to use after watching some of the intructional videos on youtube. It is very easy to clean and the milk steamer has worked flawlessly so far. If you put the steam wand in at the right angle and depth and listen for that kissing sound it comes of creamy and perfect everytime. I also hymned and hawed over the idea of finding the right coffee beans, then the right grind setting, then tamping pressure... worrying I would mess up the esspresso and make it too bitter, not have a proper "crema," etc... I will say right now that I put some store bought tim hortons pre ground coffee in that machine, tamped it to what seemed good to me, and went on to make the best dang latte I have ever had... on my first try! I'm sure a lot of coffee/esspessro "experts" will scoff, but comparing the cup i made (and subsequent cups) with anything I have had from starbucks, upscale resturants, and many highly rated local coffee shops that roast their own beans on site my home lattes win hands down. (granted my latte art sucks but im not making these for my eyes, plus i figure i have time to learn!) I was blown away how easy it was and how good it was and instantly gave up any notion of needing to grind my own beans. I tell you no lie that the pour and "crema," color and everything else looked like every video i could find of esspresso and it was neither too bitter nor too watered down for my palate. I will admit that the first time it made esspresso the pour took about 50 seconds which had me worried because it appears the ideal pour is 25-30 seconds to avoid bitter or watered down esspessro. but it tasted excellent! Just in case it is helpful, i do drink regular coffee black, and whiskey straight so i could have a stronger palate than some which means I don't notice any wrongs in the esspresso. However my wife finds 15% abv wine to taste strongly alcoholic and says the lattes I have made for her were amazing and she is not a flatter lol. Anyways, I love and it works amazing. Hope this helps! ... show more

  • Excellent quality, great cup of coffee and very easy to use.
Style: Temp iQ
I have been using this espresso machine for the last 5 years and it’s made the best cup of coffee. I got it on sale during Amazon‘s Black Friday. And it has paid for itself 10 times over every year. Cleaning the machine is very easy and the upkeep of it is simple. If you’re a first time espresso machine user I highly recommend this machine for both the price and quality. It’s durable, doesn’t take up a ton of space, looks good on the counter, and very sustainable. I hope to have this machine for another 5 to 10 years. It truly is a quality machine for a fraction of the other designer machines. ... show more

  • Good entry level espresso machine, if you can get a good price.
Style: Temp iQ
This review is for the Calphalon Temp iQ Espresso Machine with out the grinder. Let me start by saying that I do like this machine and it works pretty well as an entry level machine under $300....if you can get it for that price. I bought my machine a week before Black Friday and only paid $214 new. By December 1st, I noticed that the price shot up to $400. I would never pay $400 for this machine because there are machines with much better features at or near that price point. Some reviewers complained about the steam wand and I'll admit that I had trouble at first. It took some practice to get it exactly right, but now it works great. The game changer for me was to get a thermometer for the milk pitcher. After getting that, I realized that I wasn't letting the milk get to the proper temperature and now it's nearly perfect. Technique is also important so I recommend watching to short how-to videos online. Espresso shots pull pretty good, but there are two things that make significant improvements. First, I bought a scale to weigh my dose. Second is grind freshness. I've been buying coffee from a local store with a grinder and I've noticed that my first few shots taste great and then the quality seems to taper off after a few days. It seems that having your own grinder it very key to getting a good shot (from any machine). Ultimately, this is why I would not pay $400 for this machine because you really need a good grinder so you might as well buy a higher end machine with one included, unless you already have an espresso grinder. Lavazza has a good pre-ground espresso coffee, but again, the quality of the coffee diminishes after a few days of opening the can. This machine comes with pressurized portafilter baskets that are somewhat forgiving on grind size, but I would like to have the option for non-pressurized baskets. So far, I have not found a non pressurized basket that works well. I tried a pro version basket, but the machine does not play well with it and I can't get a good shot to extract. Unfortunately, Calphalon does not currently make any accessories for their machine. So far, I've had no issues with maintenance of the machine and no indication of any problems. It seems to be well built. If you can get this machine for close to the $200 price point then it's definitely a good buy. At the $400 price, you might as well spend a little more and get a better brand that includes a grinder. FYI - This is a completely unpaid, unbiased review by an everyday user of this machine. ... show more

  • Does the job
Style: Temp iQ
Okay, so I've had three espresso machines before this one. All of the others were variations on the Cuisinart EM-100, priced at right around 200 dollars. That was the first actual electric pump machine I've owned. I've tried the stovetop percolator style before, and could never get it to taste anything but bitter. This Calphalon model is a step up, for the most part, except that the Cuisinart made a much smoother cup of espresso. The Calphalon, on the other hand, makes a better TASTING espresso cup, while the foamy texture (not the milk, the espresso) makes it more difficult to do "art" using the microfoam from the steamed milk. The Cuisinart always made a very smooth crema top to the espresso, while the Calphalon's foamy textured espresso is simply not "flat" enough to create much of anything other than a circle, so there's that. That's not a "deal breaker" for me, though, since all of my "art", produced using the Cuisinart (while it still worked) was somewhat "accidental" anyway. I'd end up with something that "looked like" something else, and used toothpicks to finalize an idea. My "artistic" ability came down to the equivalent of looking at clouds, and imagining things. So, now that I've been using the Calphalon for a few months, I'm fully satisfied with its output, and ease of use. I've developed a routine through my daily experience of making lattes for my wife and I, and it's good enough. The flavor is better than with the Cuisinart, and I'm thinking it's because the Calphalon has some kind of temperature "governor" that keeps the espresso temperature just right. The tamper on this one is plastic, and independent of the machine, which is a good thing, though I may decide to purchase a metal tamper, since I'm used to the weight of the one I used with the Cuisinart. The portafilter and holder are a different size than those on the Cuisinart, bigger by a few mm, so I'll have to look around for the right size metal tamper. Other than that, there's really nothing more to mention. It's a good machine, unless you want to do the "art". I'll have to investigate, to see if there's anything I'm doing that's making the espresso foam up the way it does on the surface. ... show more

  • Great machine, especially for the price!
Style: Temp iQ
Bottom line, this is a great espresso machine! If you want more detail, especially addressing some of the negative reviews out there, read on. No, it isn't a multi-thousand dollar machine with two boilers and such. Anyone expecting it to be is going to be disappointed - keep that in mind when reading other negative reviews. Also, it isn't a k-cup machine. Anyone expecting to make a perfect espresso right out of the barn, in 20 seconds tops, might be disappointed too. There is a pump. You will hear it. In the grand scheme of things it's pretty darn quiet, and no louder than any other mid-level machine. Steaming milk will also make some noise. If you know how to do it, it's actually quieter than the pump. That screech people complain about? That's just poor technique. I don't mean that as an insult, it's just fact. The instruction book included is detailed, accurate, and very helpful! Getting the bean grind and tamping pressure takes patience and practice to get just right, and the instructions even tell you that. Getting the filled portafilter on the first time was a challenge. I had to use fewer grounds that first time, and each time since has gotten easier (I have since increased the amount of grounds). I think this has to do with the gasket just being new - I'd rather have a great seal than a gasket that ends up leaking after a few uses. Warm-up to ready time is very quick. The espresso is hot, and so is the hot water (LOVE this function!). Making coffee, for me, is meditative. I still use a Chemex pour-over carafe for my regular coffee. If you just want a quick cuppa for the caffeine fix before you rush out the door, this isn't the machine for that. If you can't afford the big fancy gizmo, but you still want a great espresso that you have control and care of making, this is an exceptional machine, especially for the price! AND, to bring this machine ever closer to the quick and easy k-cup brew machines, ESE pods work in the single shot filter basket. Soak the pods in hot water for a few seconds first though, and that eliminates the issue with water going around the pod instead of through it. Soaking blooms the grounds (so they expand a little) and the dampness also helps create a seal against the filter edge. ... show more

  • It's okay , but cheap portafilter and no manual shot, .... STOP WORKING AFTER LESS THAN 2 MONTHS It's okay , but cheap portafilter and no manual shot, .... STOP WORKING AFTER LESS THAN 2 MONTHS
Style: Temp iQ
12/28/2020 (1 month review ) Portafilter has a plastic drain well, both filter baskets single n double shots are dual wall ( pressurized basket) i like how fast they heat up, I like how strong and well the steam wand worked. I had trouble using it at beginning because I didn't know how to froth milk with this machine, it was really loud hiss noise , high pitch due to the angle of the wand pointing and how deep I put it. I got it figured out, n it worked great, no complaints at all. (Tip alway at top layer of the milk, and point at maximum angle lay on the pouring sprout of the pitcher without pointing directly into the pitcher wall, and create a vortex n keep it going) I don't like that it has plastic in the Portafilter, n my Portafilter has rust after few weeks used. I had to scrub it off. I don't like included both dualwall. They should included double shot, single n dual wall filter instead. I'll never use the 1 shot. I took out the plastic part by unscrew the bottom on the Portafilter n will buy the single wall basket to try. I also don't like that they don't have the manual option, only single and double shot on control knob, while the exact machine with grinder will have the manual option. . I also don't like their cheap portafilter handle. I can't judge on actual quality of the shot as I'm still playing with different coffee n different grind, depend on the quality of the grind it will affect the shot as well as the quality of the beans but the pressurized basket did work pretty well. I just want to explore for more options Will update on durability after a year or so. 1/20/2021 turn on n 2 lights blinking never stop I can't dispense anything, called MFG and they tell me to send to them to check n wait another 3 weeks after that to get replacement, luckily Amazon extended Christmas return, which I bought this for Christmas now I gonna get replacement from Amazon instead. 1/23/2020 Amazon sent me new unit, hooked it up n start it, the water went straight to the bottom everytime I pour a shot, little to no water go into filter. Yes I know I had to take out the plastic, this is 2nd machine, brand new, I don't know what they forget to hook up inside the machine. I tried to replace it again but Amazon said they couldn't do it. So I just return it for money back, waste of time ... show more

  • Great machine!
Style: Temp iQ w/Burmill Grinder
I got this because I wanted an espresso machine with a built in grinder and a better steam wand. I've been using the same espresso machine for the last 5 years and it makes pretty okay espresso and if I want a latte then the steam wand is better than nothing. This machine has been a MAJOR upgrade! I'm still working on getting the grind right for the perfect espresso shot, but if I need to adjust the water flow then it's nice to know I can do that. You can customize 3 different espresso settings--temperature and amount of water. The grinder is very customizable as well. So you can get it just the way you want. I love the steam wand, I was a barista for 5.5 years and I love foam. I am obsessed with iced dry cappuccinos, which just confuse most baristas and they never give you enough foam. My old machine had an extremely subpar steam wand so I hadn't been able to get any decent foam at all for an iced cappuccino since I left my barista job. Since getting this machine I have been able to make really thick, sweet foam just how I like it. I've made more cappuccinos/lattes since I've gotten this machine than I have in months. The steam wand is really powerful and it took me almost a whole pitcher to get the hang of it. They give you pretty clear, picture directions, but this isn't the most beginner-friendly machine. Be prepared to experiment a lot and make a lot of adjustments even if you have barista experience. There are a lot of little parts to clean which was annoying since I bought this used from amazon warehouse so I had to scrub the whole thing down. There's multiple parts for the drip/ground tray, there's all the grinder pieces, etc. It's also annoying that the espresso pucks are much larger than my old machine so I can't gently bop the side of the portafilter to get it out, I have to smack it out. I was just saying how stupid I thought knock boxes were and now I'll probably end up buying one. The steam wand has to be wiped down at the machine, only the very bottom detaches and you get foam on the stationary part. I've been wetting down a dish towel, laying it under the steam wand, discharging the steam wand, and then wiping it down. My old machine I just needed to unscrew the steam wand and then rinse it and put it back on. So it's a lot more cleaning/labor intensive...but the coffee has been really amazing, I'm so excited to finally be able to grind my own espresso. I haven't been able to find a grinder that gets the coffee fine enough consistently. ... show more

  • Love this machine!
Style: Temp iQ
In my opinion this machine really deserves all of its positive reviews. I’ve owned espresso machines for more than 20 years and, for the money, this is the best. My first one was an all-metal Italian number that made great espresso but weighed a ton (people upset by the plastic bodies in newer machines, take note). It lasted for years, but was eventually replaced by a couple of machines that couldn’t seem to get very far past their warranty period. I love a good coffee but I just can’t justify spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a more expensive machine—this one is a great compromise. I chose this particular machine for a few reasons: it’s on several “best of” lists I saw on the internet; it gets good reviews here on Amazon; and the Calphalon brand is reliable. It comes with everything you need, including a steaming pitcher and a tamper. Some people rail about plastic tampers, thinking you need a metal one, which is simply not true. The tamper is just to lightly compact and even out the coffee grounds in the portafilter—compact them too much and water can’t get through. You can brew coffee directly into a regular cup (a 4” mug will fit), eliminating the need for espresso cups unless that’s your preference. The one thing you might want to buy is a small immersion thermometer to monitor the heat of the milk while you’re steaming it (available on Amazon for less than $10). I have a few suggestions. 1. Read the instruction manual—it’s very clear and very thorough. Don’t be put off by reviewers who claim the steamer won’t properly froth milk. They are wrong, even if they have experience as a barista (Starbucks and Peet’s baristas never bother to foam milk). Follow instructions and you’ll get a rich thick foam. 2. Be prepared to practice a bit if something goes awry. I’ve made hundreds of lattes in my time and it still took a couple of practice runs to get used to the machine and get everything just right. 3. Do everything you can to keep the machine clean, as the manufacturer recommends. It will really make a difference, both in the taste of your coffee and in the longevity of your machine. I’m hoping to get many years of use from this machine and I highly recommend it. I think you’ll be pleased if you choose it. ... show more
