After realizing that attempting to own and maintain any actual working antique mantle clock was not cost effective in this day and age, we begrudgingly relegated ourselves to a battery-operated clock with faux chime. This clock appeared to come out on top amongst Amazon’s offerings at this price tier so we decided to give it a shot. We love it. I was concerned that it would look and sound cheap, but it doesn’t. It has a classy high quality look, and even the “chime” has a reasonably convincing percussive sound rather than a tinny electronic recording sound. Initial setup is a *little* tedious, but not particularly difficult. You’ll just need to give it your undivided attention for about 5 minutes or less to properly set the clock and then move on with your life. It’s been about 2 or 3 months now and has kept time consistently thus far. I can be anywhere in the house looking at a clock on my phone, computer, an appliance, digital alarm clock, etc, and I can count on hearing that chime from our living room on the hour, right on time. I appreciate the volume control and night time mode — which we use — that silences the chime on the hours of 11pm thru 5am. ... show more

This clock is incredible value for the cost. Itis delightful! Its well made, with easy access to settings. What really wowed me was the sound. For a more or less mini- type version of a wall Schoolhouse Regulator, there is nothing mini about the sound. Theere is no tin-like tone to the chimes, and it keeps time perfectly, matching my automatic atomic time keeping clock. Readability is relative to the quality if your eyesight & distance. I only use readers for close up but I can easily read it from 6ft away. ... show more

We bought this Bulova clock for its nostalgic style and the Big Ben hourly chime. As opposed to the much more expensive plastic imitations, this Bulova clock is made from real wood -- and it sounds like wood. It is a beautiful and expertly finished wooden piece that fits perfectly our 19th and 20th century living room furniture. The clock-work is obviously modern, but so far -- after about a month -- it has been very accurate. A welcome modern touch is the option of switching off the bongs from 11 o'clock at night to 5 o'clock in the morning. ... show more

    • Confusing, Unclear Instructions - but figured it out
Confusing and unclear instructions. After re-reading the instructions several times, calling the Bulova customer service, and getting answers to my posted questions, I think I finally figured it out. The Time Set Dial is flat, black, about 1/2"-3/4" diameter, located near the pendulum. Unfortunately the instructions do not include a diagram of this dial nor describe it's location, but they do make clear that this dial should only be turned counter-clockwise to move the hands of the clock. There is another smaller, raised Black Nob labeled Volume, that can be turned to control the volume. Then there is a very small, raised Red Button labeled "Set Button". This button is for setting the Chimes to coordinate with the appropriate hour. Initially I got the Time and the Chimes out of sync. What worked for me was to first Set the Time with the flat, black dial. Then Set the Chimes by pushing (not turning) the red button the number of times that corresponds to the hour in military time. Each time you push the red button, let the chime finish each time, before you push the button again until you've completed the total number needed. For example: if you're setting the time at 6 AM you need to push the red button a total of six times. If you're setting the time at 6 PM, push the red button 18 times. This may not be the best or most logical way to get this clock to function, but it seems to have worked for me. Also, when you first get the clock, the pendulum is secured with a rubber band, but even after I removed the rubber band I still had to push on the pendulum to get it dislodged from being wedged in place.     • Avoid this clock.
It will not chime the hour properly. The directions for setup are not accurate. There are no youtube videos for this model. The setup did not go according to the instructions what so ever. Setting the time per directions to 5:50 then inserting batteries is supposed to make the clock reset to 5:45. Nothing happens. You are supposed to be able to press a red button to set the number of times it chimes representing the hour but only it if doesn't work properly on its own. This has not worked. for example, at 5:00 PM sometimes it chimes 5 times sometimes 6 or seven. Setting for the AM or PM function makes no difference. It plays the tunes properly on the hour but the chime representing the hour will not work. Now I have to take the time to drive back to a store and get a refund. Not worth your time. It is made it China, so that accounts for much of the poor quality and poor instructions. ... show more
