  • Great printer, seller not so much.
Style: New Model: MFC-J995DW XL (inc. 2 years ink) Pattern Name: Printer
The printer is great, fast and easy to set up. It's the seller I have a problem with. I ordered this printer because of the extra ink tanks that are Supposed to come with it. But all I got were the starter tanks, when I got in touch with the seller I was told to ship the whole thing back. The problem with that was, the box was already gone, all I wanted was the ink tanks that I paid for and not have to ship the printer back and reorder it again. Be careful with orders from this seller. I would look somewhere else to buy it. ... show more

  • Printer Quality is not what it used to be and too expensive so-so performance
Style: New Model: MFC-J995DW XL (inc. 2 years ink) Pattern Name: Printer
I have been using computers since 1982 starting with the old dot-matrix printers. Over the years printer quality had improved greatly, then decreased in the last few years. I've used HP, Brother, a little Pixma Canon, and Epson at work and Epson was my favorite go-to printer for many years. The last 7 years my work and personal Epsons have degraded with many mechanical problems after short life spans. My latest $139.00 Epson of 15 months died so I decided I'd try a new Brother since several made the top grade at Consumer Reports and in the customer reviews and Epson reviews have completely tanked. I paid $243.00 on sale (printer was listed at $299.00) which I thought was high but I surmised if I paid more, I would get a much better quality product and save on long term ink consumption with the new InkVestment Tank and "2 Years of ink in the box." I have been so disappointed by this Brother MFC-J995DW XL from the moment I took it out of the box. First off, the lid does not have any kind of spring or stability bracket system so when you lift it up, don't let go or it will fall hard either forward or backward. The plug is hardwired into the machine which is not necessarily bad but it was jammed into the box bending the plug more than 90 degrees where it comes out of the machine. It was working but this is an unnecessarily stressful crimp to place on any kind of electronic wiring and causes long term potential damage inside. The paper tray is entirely thin plastic, no metal guides, gears or fittings, and feels fragile and easy to break if inserted incorrectly. The paper flip-out holder is also very thin / flimsy. Anyone who bumps into it accidentally will snap it right off. It is made of thinner plastic than found in the toys which accompany children's fast food orders. Make sure the printer is set back on its desk or table in such a way that it cannot be backed into. The pages also had a tendency to shoot out of the printer onto the floor if you didn't keep an eye on it. When printing a word document, the font is not very sharp, actually looks like a copy of a copy instead of having crisp clear lettering. It is also a dark gray color instead of sharp black. Graphic colors also have a slightly faded blurry look, like a copy of a copy. I tried to get it to print in black-only to see if that improved the print for my college research papers and save money, but it kept printing with color, then after several documents, seemed to get the message and started printing in black ink. Double sided printing was intermittent at first printing about half my research in single sided format, but eventually straightened itself out, I don't know why it didn't work correctly from the beginning or why it finally started working. Scanned okay both from the tray and from the flat glass but the scanned document was slightly blurry, scanned old black and white photos were pretty good quality but the scanned color photos were a bit more blurred, again like a copy of a copy of a copy. The scanned items also had horizontal lines across the whole page about every inch. I printed a Google Map and the colors were so light they were hardly legible. Wifi seems to work fine, I could print from my laptop in another room without difficulty. I did not have any trouble with setup, it is not an automatic thing like finding its connections intuitively, but if you pay attention to the instructions and use the enclosed disk, everything set up properly. Did take 7-10 minutes to prime the ink cartridges and be ready to print but I'm not sure how that compares to other new styles and models. Overall, once it worked its own kinks out, the printer does work but the overall quality is not in keeping with the higher cost of the machine at all, along with the thin/flimsy makeup of the internal plastic gears and parts. It is also a noisy machine for the most part. I could live with all of these things if the text, color, copying and scanning functions were up to par, clear and sharp, but the vagueness and blurry feeling of the documents and photos feels like something you would get from a $40 - $60 printer (which I tried once to save money), not one listed at nearly $300. I bought it online just based on reviews and features listed without inspecting the printers first hand, and that was a mistake. After using this Brother, I went to the local stores and looked at the printers, pulling out the trays, etc. It seems that not just the Brother models are being made of thinner less sturdy materials. Most stores no longer keep them plugged in and inked up so customers can try out the printing features so it was still difficult to gauge the quality of the printing and color features. Almost all all-in-one inkjets for home use have less than stellar reputations anymore which is very stressful when you are looking for a good product that will last more than 6 months. Again, I was very disappointed in the quality versus cost so I'm sending it back and trying something else. ... show more

  • Just an honest review after owning for two and a half years.
Style: New Model: MFC-J995DW XL (inc. 2 years ink) Pattern Name: Printer
Ok, so I've owned this printer with two year ink supply now for over two and a half years. I finally ran out of yellow ink a few days ago. This printer has never jammed, never malfunctioned, never broke any hinges, paper trays etc. I have owned printers from Canon, HP and Lexmark and this printer beats them all for reliability. Two and a half years and I never had to refill ink, I still have a some cyan, magenta and black ink, probably will run out in the next few weeks. The ink reinstall process is the easiest I've ever seen. This brother printer updates flawlessly, I've never had an issue with an update. I don't know what else to say, it's probably not the best printer for photos, but I don't use it for photos, so no biggie, I don't think they advertise it as a photo printer anyway. The ink head cleaning process has also worked flawlessly if I don't use the printer for awhile, the scanner feeds perfectly, it's relatively quiet and pretty fast on most documents. The print is clean, so this printer for me anyway has been stellar, I have no complaints. ... show more

  • A Winner!
Style: New Model: MFC-J995DW XL (inc. 2 years ink) Pattern Name: Printer
So far, knock on wood, this printer is a gem. It behaves like it knows what it's doing. I have not used all the features on it, but have printed photos, etc. The ink supply seems unlimited.. you forget how awful it was to have to buy those expensive, little tanks and change them way too often. On this one, it seems I have changed the black once per year. I've yet to change the color tanks! This is the second Brother printer I've owned and I'm very impressed with the quality and performance of both. ... show more

  • Not Good
Style: New Model: MFC-J995DW XL (inc. 2 years ink) Pattern Name: Printer
After wrecking our beloved 10+ year old Epson printer by buying cheap ink cartridges, we spent many hours researching printers and reading review. We decided to stretch our ideal budget to buy this one. We were incredibly disappointed, however, with the print quality. While our old printer had horrible color issues, it still printed b&w well with nice sharp, bold letters. We printed the same document on this new printer and it came out dim and blurred. Then we tried printing a few photos and they were terrible with lines across the people. We returned it and bought an HP instead that was $100 cheaper and prints beautifully. ... show more

  • After 1 yr very light use print quality is unusable
Style: New Model: MFC-J995DW XL (inc. 2 years ink) Pattern Name: Printer
Print quality is unusable even after deep cleaning several times. Very disappointed - it's basically a paper weight now.
