Was able to handle multiple blows to the wood with a heavy sledgehammer. I did use this one the ground but will mount to a log so it will be easier to use and load with a new log every time. This splitter is a sturdy piece of metal and accommodates a good sized piece of wood. It comes with heavy duty bolts for mounting and a nice storage cover. Using it directly works if the base is held down with your foot. However, having it mounted to a stump or wide, heavy log is definitely recommended. We split the wood using a light heavy duty mallet. Next time we will try a heavier mallet to get the job done quicker. It will be very useful when we need more kindling for our campfires. Been splitting pine and oak by hand for decades. Burn between three and four cords a season. I had a very positive first impression of this product. The top ring is of a frustratingly cheap material and after only two days of use it is damaged and will eventually fail. Returning.
