  • Very happy with the Breville Oracle Jet
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
This semi-automatic replaced a Gaggia super-automatic. There is slightly more work between drinks using the knockbox, wiping out the filter basket, doing a quick flush of the shower head, and giving the shower head a quick wipe, but the quality of the espresso is significantly better. I was considering a machine with a double boiler, but I'm so glad I didn't get one of those. The jet heating system is ready to brew seconds after turning it on. I made an adjustment to the tamp fan to slightly reduce the size of the dose. You can find a lot of videos online on how to do this. Very easy and only took a minute or two. ... show more

  • Makes perfect espresso quickly and easily.
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
This was an upgrade from an older Breville double boiler. Although the Oracle Jet is expensive, it is well worth it. You can make a variety of drinks automatically and quickly with the touchscreen. The Jet heats up in just a few seconds and can be finished brewing espresso within about a minute of turning it on. It has wifi so it will get updates from Breville. Best machine I have owned. Stop debating and just buy it. ... show more

  • Very Disappointed – Machine Failing and Smells Like Burning Rubber
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
I purchased the Breville Oracle Jet with high expectations, but unfortunately, the experience has been extremely disappointing. After investing in such an expensive machine, I expected durability and quality. Instead, only a short time into owning it, the machine has started to give off a strong burning rubber smell every time it’s in use. This isn’t just inconvenient — it’s a major safety concern. A premium coffee machine at this price point should never have issues that make me worry about fire hazards or toxic fumes in my kitchen. To make matters worse, the performance has dropped significantly, and the machine no longer works properly. For the cost of this machine, I feel completely let down. I trusted Breville’s reputation, but this product has not lived up to it at all. At this point, I cannot safely continue to use it. I cannot recommend this product to anyone. ... show more

  • Would buy again, incredible coffee
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
This thing is amazing. Yes it makes great hot coffee but the iced is also out of this world. I honestly did not expect it to be this good. Already we are coffee at home people but I have no desire to get coffee anywhere outside. It is easy to use even for novices and my husband who is not always jazzed with multiple step machines. And has really worked very well. Paired with great fresh roasted beans (we love our Dean’s Beans) you can make lol the $7 coffees you want just as good as a coffee shop. Worth the splurge. ... show more

  • Better than going to Starbucks
Color: Brushed Stainless Steel
Makes excellent espresso drinks, my wife says it’s better than Starbucks. You have to pick the right beans to get the best results. Try for fresh recent roasts. Easy to use controls if something happens it explains what to do on the touchscreen with easy simple instructions.

  • Superb coffee quality. Extreme automation.
Color: Black Truffle
The media could not be loaded. When I was in my mid 20s and working my way through college I spent about 5 years employed as a Barista at a coffee house near the university I attended. We had a wine and beer license, but for the most part we served coffee drinks. Lattes, cappucinos, Americanos, machiatos, etc. During my time there I got to know coffee and the art of preparing it pretty well, so this is not an unqualified review. I've had the Breville Oracle Jet in my Kitchen for 3 days now and I've put it through its paces. So buckle up and I'll give you the rundown of what is good, what is bad and what features work for me and which ones don't. First and foremost, this machine is extremely easy to set up and use. This is really more than just an espresso machine. This thing is like a coffee computer. You're provided with a test strip to test the water hardness where you live, and the touch screen will ask for these results and guide you through every step of the setup process. It's not hard. Soak the filter. Set up the wifi (yes it connects to the Internet to download new drink recipes and do firmware updates). I pulled my first shot within 20 minutes of opening the box. It's so simple to use. Literally, a child could make quality coffee using this machine. Not only is it easy to use, but it is easy to use and make really good coffee with it. Most easy-to-use espresso machines fail in the quality department--easy to use, but sub-par coffee. Not with this machine. Even if you are a certified coffee idiot, the coffee drinks you make with this machine will easily match the quality of anything you will get at a Starbucks or dedicated coffee house with moderately well-trained baristas. You don't have to be a coffee expert to get great results with this machine. And if you know what you're doing, you can get 5-star-restaurant-level coffee drinks, but more on that later. I'll start by listing the categories in which I think this machine excels and then I'll close with the areas in which I think there could be improvement. First, let's talk about grind. This machine has a decent sized hopper for your coffee beans, and you can microadjust the grind, from powdery fine all the way to relatively coarse. Of course, this is an espresso machine. You're not making drip coffee here, so you're going to be using a finer grind than you would for drip coffee, but the quality of the grind, whatever the setting is consistent. This grinder performs better than most professional grinders I've seen. It also auto-tamps your espresso into a very nice, even puck. I've never used a machine with auto tamping before and I was doubtful, expecting to have to use a manual tamper to correct it, but I was wrong. It really does prepare the coffee perfectly. When you pull the espresso shot, if it runs too fast or too slow the auto barista will give you suggestions for adjusting the grind. The machine measures the shots by volume, not by time, which is nice. It measures the time it takes to pull the shot and suggests changes to the grind settings based on those results. This is helpful, but don't be overly swayed by the suggestions because the auto barista does not always give the best advice. Think of it as general guidance that you may follow, or may ignore, depending on your preferences. You'll want to trust your taste and of course what the shot looks like. You'll need to adjust the grind settings depending on the beans you're using and how they're roasted. Dark roasts brew differently than medium roasts or light roasts. If you use the same beans all the time it won't matter, but if you like to change it up from French Roasts to Breakfast style roasts, etc., you'll want to adjust your grind accordingly. It might take a little while to get it all figured out, but it won't take too long. You'll also find that different grinds might work better for different drinks, especially if you're doing cold brew. Which is the next thing I want to talk about. The drink recipes are very nice. You can also create your own recipes and add them, but the machine will teach you how to make the drinks you love. You will gain a greater understanding of the coffee you're drinking just by using this machine. One thing this machine does amazingly well is cold drinks. I've always made cold brew coffee in a French press with a coarse grind left soaking in the fridge for 12 hours or more. So when I saw that this thing makes cold drinks in less than a minute, I expected them to...well...not be very good, and man, I was so wrong. The cold drinks out of this machine are delicious. Better even than cold brew made the old fashioned way. It takes longer to pull them than the hot espresso, for obvious reasons, but not too much. The machine will pull a double shot of hot espresso in about 20 seconds, and it will pull a double shot of cold espresso in something like 50 seconds. But I cannot overstate the quality. Unlike most cold brews, you'll want to dial up the grind to something super fine because you're not giving the water all night exposure to the grounds, but man, you add a shot of chocolate, some half and half and a few ice cubes and bam! So good it should be illegal. So the brew quality is excellent as well, especially once you get your grind figured out. The milk auto frothing feature is good. Not great, but good. You can froth (and heat) milk automatically or manually. Auto froth is good for cappucinos, but not so much for lattes, which typically have a denser, creamier foam. The auto frothing wand is very nice, don't get me wrong. It senses temperature and heats the milk evenly, but when you're trying to make a dense, creamy foam, you need the steam to be stirring the milk into a kind of whirlpool. In auto mode, the frothing wand just doesn't do that very well. Again, it's as good or better than what you'll get at Starbucks, but it's not the best. For the best froth, I use the manual mode. You do this by leaving the wand extended, then you can hold the milk pitcher and control the placement of the wand and create your whirlpool effect. So you can get excellent steamed and frothed milk with this machine, but you'll get your best results by holding the pitcher and guiding the process manually. The machine is well built and easy to clean. Some of the material is plastic, but it is, in no way, flimsy or cheap. Nor is it lightweight. Nor should it be. You wouldn't want a 2 thousand dollar coffee machine to be lightweight. Fortunately, it has a lever in front that raises wheels so you can roll it around on the counter whenever you need to open the back to clean the water tank or change the filter, etc. The surfaces are all rounded and smooth, making cleanup a snap. Just make sure to wipe it down right after you use it. If you let the coffee or milk froth dry before you clean it, then, of course, clean up will be more work. Common sense stuff. It's thoughtful design features like these (modular wheels, easy to clean surfaces, etc.) that make this machine so good. There are a couple of things I don't like about this machine. These are minor gripes, but if you're going to spend 2 grand on a coffee maker, I figure these are the kind of things you deserve to know and would want me to be honest about. First, the drip tray and water tank are both too small. You'll need to empty your drip tray after every 3 or 4 drinks. This machine uses a lot of water. Every time you steam milk it purges the wand afterward. Pulling shots consumes water, plus you'll run empty shots to purge the brewing apparatus occasionally as well. And steaming milk uses water, of course. Steam is made of water, in case you didn't know. When I worked at the coffee house we had a huge steam compressor in a room behind the bar, and our coffee machines were plugged straight into the drains, so these were all non issues. With this machine you'll find yourself constantly watching water levels, adding water and emptying the drip tray. In three days I've refilled the resevoir 4 or 5 times and emptied the drip tray probably 8 or 9 times. Yes, I will confess, this is a minor, nitpicky kind of gripe, but it is a gripe I have. Another complaint is that the machine resists allowing you to just do it yourself. If you know what you're doing and just want to make your coffee without automated inteference, you have to find workarounds. For example, you can't just pull a shot until you're satisfied that it's done. It stops the shot when it thinks it's done. This bothers me. Sometimes I want to pull a shot a little longer, or stop it a little sooner, depending on how the pull is going. Maybe I'm still getting good crema when the shot is technically done and I want it to run a few seconds longer. Nope. No can do. Now if the shot starts to get thin or watery before it's done, you can stop it early, but I haven't yet found a way to keep it going longer than it's supposed to. Also the auto steaming issue. It's not bad, but it's not great when you steam in auto mode. For two thousand dollars I would expect better performance out of an automated feature. I'm not saying the auto steaming is bad, because it's not. It's just not superb, and I think the price point on this machine, quite frankly, justifies an expecation of superb. My final concern is longevity. As I said before, this is a coffee computer. It has a touchscreen, and it has automated tamping and temperature sensors in the steam wand, volumetric sensors when pulling shots, etc. There are lots of sensitive parts, and lots of moving parts. This machine has a lot of bells and whistles, and with all those features, that means there's a lot that can go wrong. I'm not saying it will. These concerns might be totally baseless and this machine might work perfectly for 20 years to come, but I kind of doubt it. The machine comes with a 2 year warranty, but personally, for two thousand dollars I would want to get more mileage out of it than just two years. I rather suspect that after a few years some key component in this machine will fail and I'll be reduced to a more manual experience, or perhaps even be forced to scrap the machine altogether. I'm not saying the machine seems cheaply made. It does not. It seems like quality equipment, but it is quality equipment with some fragile, important electronic components. I like this machine very much, but I would be surprised if it is still working in ten years. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't last five years. All the automation and technology adds an element of fragility. I would recommend this machine to anyone who doesn't mind spending 2 grand on a machine that might last 4 or 5 years so that they can have superb, delicious coffee at home, especially if you're someone who appreciates quality coffee drinks but may not be entirely comfortable with the process of preparing them. When you think in terms of what it would cost to have quality coffee at Starbucks or some other coffee house over the course of 2 to 4 years, the cost isn't really all that staggering. But if you're someone who knows your way around an espresso machine and understands the nuances of roast and grind and how to produce a gourmet-grade espresso drink without all the bells and whistles of automation, you would probably be better off with a simpler, more manual machine for two reasons. One, because if you have the right skills, you can get a machine that will make quality espresso for probably 1/4 of what this machine will cost you, and two, because that machine will probably last longer simply because it isn't full of sensors and computers like this one is. Still, I won't deny, I'm happy to have this espresso machine and I fully intend to drive it until the wheels fall off. ... show more
