  • Excellent and versatile sander - low vibration and great ergonomics
I bought this after having their 18V 5" random orbit model and I'm so happy I did. Non-rotating finish sanders most often do a better job at preserving square edges, they work better on actual edges (especially on very thin material), and of course corner access isn't possible with a round rotating pad. The cordless revolution has been fantastic and there are so many really nice and capable tools now. I'd bought the Milwaukee 1/4 sheet sander and honestly I can hardly stand to use the thing unless it's for short sessions and/or just on flat surfaces where I'm above the tool. It's just too heavy and too unbalanced and it needs more juice than what the small batteries can provide. It does sand decently, though. The Bosch design is so much better. At first glance I thought that their design of putting the battery so far behind the pad was lunacy but when I got the 5" sander I was shocked to see how nicely balanced it is (due to the weight of the motor and tool body up front, and considering the 4Ah battery....larger batteries do of course shift weight back a bit too much). This model is no different - excellent balance and manuverability. The 1/6 sheet pad is even better but the 1/4 sheet and mouse pads are just fine. The 1/6 sheet pad is modeled after the Festool so there should be zero trouble with anyone not being able to find precut paper for it especially these days and here on Amazon. The serious grit green paper is ok - not a high quality paper but inexpensive and pretty decent. Klingspor has some much better offerings, either precut with holes, or full sheets to cut your own. If you really want fantastic ultra long lasting paper, check out their sheets of J-Flex cloth backed and get your socks knocked off (seriously...it's worth the price premium if you sand much...amazing stuff that I've used for almost 30 years now). The ergonomics are wonderful. Feels great in the hand - either hand - and you can grip and manuver well from nearly any angle. The switch is a great design - simple click, right up front, no thinking required. Just like on the 5" random orbit, I like the quality metal shroud on these tools as it dissipates heat really well and doesn't get very hot in extended use - but since the dust collection port is there and can't move, it does get in the way at times. But the ergonomics and ease of switching hands while maintaining control works so well that you can just turn the sander so the port is out of the way. It would be nice if the port were a seperate removable piece. The pad material is similar to Festool - nice white dense foam with moderate squish to it. It's a bit thin for my preference (I do a lot of thin edge and inside corner profiling) but it's more durable than most of the softer black foams that other sanders use. The old Porter Cable 330 type pad material was outstanding and I have retrofitted those pads to other-branded sanders a number of times, but it isn't possible to do on these Bosch models. But the stock material is good. Battery life on the 4Ah is really respectable (much better than what I saw on the 3, 5, or 6HO Milwaukee batteries on that sander...and lighter weight too). I'm curious if the new tabless cell packs (available here in the US in another few weeks) will be any benefit to this sander...I think maybe not, and the pack sizes are pretty much the same, but it's good to see those finally arrive here (they'll be great for drills, circ saws, planer, etc). I can't tell if this model is discontinued by Bosch or not but it kinda looks that way. If you get this or have this already and love it, consider picking up spare pads/platens while you can. Good prices for those here on Amazon currently and you'll need them eventually. Bosch, unlike several other companies, is still fantastic about having parts available, affordable, and accessible and generally has long forward support for old models, but you never know. All in all, great sander, criminally underrated and under-reviewed from what I can tell. Great complement to the round random orbital sanders and having the three pad types included in the cost is fantastic. Don't forget to check out that Klingspor J-Flex cloth backed paper!! ... show more

  • This Sander is Great and in the Mighty Mouse Category!!!
This sander is versatile with all the sanding heads, and definitely gets the job done. This tool is in the Mighty Mouse category. Accessories are well thought out, and all advertised accessories were included! Would buy again!

  • I use Gator PowerNet Detail Sandpaper for the pointed mouse shaped pad
This is an excellent detail sander. However, as others have said, no one, including Bosch, seems to sell sandpaper that fits the mouse shaped sanding pad. The Bosch sanding papers I found on amazon.uk are the correct shape, but the dust collection holes do not line up, which makes the sandpaper basically useless. However, I found that Gator PowerNet Ceramic alumina Detail Sandpaper basically fits the mouse shaped pad (it is a little small in length) and is a mesh design, so the dust collection mostly works. ... show more

  • Sandpaper cannot be bought for this sander.
Excellent sander but the lack of sandpaper availability is terrible for bosch.

  • Balanced, quality, weird dust extractor horn location.
This is a very well balanced, and high-quality sander. The only flaw is the dust horn is a super awkward exit to the right side, which limits edge sanding on one side, which is the whole point of having a sander like this. If Bosch could redesign the dust horn to come out straight back like almost all the competitors do, this thing would be absolutely perfect. ... show more

  • Great sander, except where to find the sanding paper?
This is, for the most part, a great finishing sander. It's lightweight, easy to operate, and versatile. The battery life is excellent (when used with an 18V Core battery), and the material removal is very controlled. The dust collection is surprisingly very effective as well (for a "sock"). However, it is virtually impossible to find sanding paper for the machine. Additionally, the clamp-on mechanism that accompanies the 1/3 size sanding plate is a terrible design. It is, in fact, so bad that it's just about useless. That leaves you with but one option: buy a non-fitting hook and loop paper somewhere and adapt it to fit this sander. Bosch, I am German, and I am ashamed for you. ... show more
