Frequently asked questions

This means that the package includes only the sander itself. No battery or charger is included. You will need to purchase a DEWALT 20V MAX battery and charger separately if you do not already have them.

OPM stands for orbits per minute. This signifies how fast the sander vibrates or 'orbits.' Higher OPM usually means more sanding power. This DEWALT model operates at a maximum of 12,000 OPM, which means it can quickly smooth rough surfaces.

Yes. Brushless motors are known for their efficiency and longevity. This type of motor reduces friction and heat buildup, which helps to extend the tool's lifespan. It also results in longer run times between charges because it uses energy more efficiently.

An 'orbital' sander moves the sanding pad in a random orbital action. This movement not only helps the tool to work faster, but also results in a smoother finish as it helps to minimize visible sanding marks.

Should I Buy It?

Yes, the DeWalt Orbital Sander is definitely worth considering. The product's powerful performance, user-friendliness, compatibility with other DeWalt batteries and high value for the price offset its minor shortcoming with the dust bag. Overall, it is a highly effective sander, outperforming others in its category.

  • No cords make your life easier

This just works well. I like the long battery life. I use 4 or 5 amp hour batteries and the sanders lasts far past when I am ready to take a break. The dust collection is pretty efficient too. I have a DeWalt corded sander that I like but this cordless version is so much easier to use. No dragging a trailer that needs the deck sanded to where power is available, just put in a battery and go. It is built well and has survived several drops from about ten feet without issue. Also it leaves a good finish with none of the score marks some other sanders give you. ... show more

  • Best Little Sander I've Ever Had
Style: Tool Only
I've been wanting to get a wireless orbital sander for quite a while now, so I can get away from being limited by a cumbersome electrical cord. After looking and several different ones and reading multiple reviews, and because I already have at least a half dozen DeWalt 20 volt tools and mulitple batteries, I decided to get this one. This tool is simply a joy to use. I love the way the velcro keeps the pad in place, and there is no more fuss attaching rectangular shaped paper to the old style sanders with those pesky wire springs. It also does a much better job in a lot less time than any of my previous corded orbital sanders... and that's no exaggeration. It's also lighter and a lot easier to maneuver than the old rectangular shaped sanders with handles. This one is easly guided by the palm of your hand and it does a superb job. I also love the way it stops instantly when switched off, so there is no more waiting several seconds for a sander to stop running before setting it down, and not more of that aggrivating feeling that my arm is vibrating for several minutes after turning off the tool. It also has a variable speed setting, which is a great added feature. I grabbed this for $99 a couple months ago and it was a super deal. Thank you, Amazon! Note that this is the bare tool only (no battery or charger included), which is no big deal because I have many DeWalt batteries and at least 3 or 4 chargers already. Take it from a life-long wood worker who builds hardwood furniture and lots more, for a hobby. This tool needs to be in your shop. After the first time you use it, you'll feel like kicking yourself for not getting one sooner. ... show more

  • 👍

For larger projects, definitely get a 10AH, or at least a 6AH battery, so you aren't constantly stopping to charge and swap batteries. Or just save yourself the trouble and get the corded version. It's cheaper anyway. That being said, this is a great sander. DeWalt is the only power tool brand I'll use. They never disappoint and always get the job done ... show more

  • Battery Imbalance
Style: Tool Only
The sander works great. I appreciate the speed adjustment. The oscillation works better than the corded version. However, the battery does add weight to one side. You have to be mindful to apply a little more pressure to opposite side to balance. If the weight was distributed evenly, I'd give it five stars. ... show more

  • A case of you get what you pay for
Style: Tool Only
I love this sander. I wish I had seen the 'Project Farm" video first, but I read a ton of Amazon reviewd and took a shot with the Dewalt. I knew chances were high I would go with the Dewalt, as they got their hooks into me with some of their other cordless power tools. I paired this sander up with some 6Ah off-brand batteries I found on Amazon. Fantastic! I bought 2 for approximately $75. They come with a built in LED display and are 100% compatible with Dewalt tools and 20V chargers. Will they last as long sanding compared to using the Dewalt cells? I doubt it, but the savings allowed me to have 2 packs rotating so I was never stalled waiting for a fresh charge. I did try this sander with my old Dewalt 20V 2Ah battery packs and they did not give me any useful duration to sand the counters. I resurfaced a huge amount of butcher block counter tops that are on all sides of the kitchen. I could have use 40-60 grit sanding pads to remove the heavy coat of marine varnish, but the pads load up quickly and the varnish glazes over to form a air gap between the pad and the surface. I found a utility one-sided razor blade, scraped across the surface peals the old varnish with minimal effort. Two other tips: 1) buy the vacuum adapter to manage the dust, and 2) buy a big box of mixed grit sanding pads on Amazon so you can afford to keep a fresh pad with the right amount of teeth to do the job. I worn pad extends the time and drains the battery with no surface preparation (sanding) in exchange. The dust extractor when coupled to a vacuum is awesome. Very little dust covering the kitchen wares. I tried the included dust bag attachment without a vacuum and it works fairly well, better than other sanders I own. If you have a shop vac, buy the $11 adapter, you will be glad you did. Speaking of cost, this sander is on the high end of the price range. As demonstrated on Project Farm, this sander ranked close to or at the top of all of the brands tested. Easy to move around without getting tired. Controls are convenient and easy to adjust. Low vibration, no heat generated, noise was OK even when sanding inside. If you want a random orbital cordless hand sander and you can afford this model; if you follow the 2 tips, you will be very pleased with the decision and the results. There was some beautiful old butcher block underneath the varnish. Take your time and progress from 40-60 grit, to 80, 100,120 180, etc., through 400 minimum. You may not think the grit gradations are too small, but there is a visible difference in surface finish if the steps are large. I used 400 & 800 grit pads in between coats of urethane. I have received lots of compliments on the finished project. This sander earned a big portion of the praise. ... show more
