I love this sander. I wish I had seen the 'Project Farm" video first, but I read a ton of Amazon reviewd and took a shot with the Dewalt. I knew chances were high I would go with the Dewalt, as they got their hooks into me with some of their other cordless power tools. I paired this sander up with some 6Ah off-brand batteries I found on Amazon. Fantastic! I bought 2 for approximately $75. They come with a built in LED display and are 100% compatible with Dewalt tools and 20V chargers. Will they last as long sanding compared to using the Dewalt cells? I doubt it, but the savings allowed me to have 2 packs rotating so I was never stalled waiting for a fresh charge. I did try this sander with my old Dewalt 20V 2Ah battery packs and they did not give me any useful duration to sand the counters. I resurfaced a huge amount of butcher block counter tops that are on all sides of the kitchen. I could have use 40-60 grit sanding pads to remove the heavy coat of marine varnish, but the pads load up quickly and the varnish glazes over to form a air gap between the pad and the surface. I found a utility one-sided razor blade, scraped across the surface peals the old varnish with minimal effort. Two other tips: 1) buy the vacuum adapter to manage the dust, and 2) buy a big box of mixed grit sanding pads on Amazon so you can afford to keep a fresh pad with the right amount of teeth to do the job. I worn pad extends the time and drains the battery with no surface preparation (sanding) in exchange. The dust extractor when coupled to a vacuum is awesome. Very little dust covering the kitchen wares. I tried the included dust bag attachment without a vacuum and it works fairly well, better than other sanders I own. If you have a shop vac, buy the $11 adapter, you will be glad you did. Speaking of cost, this sander is on the high end of the price range. As demonstrated on Project Farm, this sander ranked close to or at the top of all of the brands tested. Easy to move around without getting tired. Controls are convenient and easy to adjust. Low vibration, no heat generated, noise was OK even when sanding inside. If you want a random orbital cordless hand sander and you can afford this model; if you follow the 2 tips, you will be very pleased with the decision and the results. There was some beautiful old butcher block underneath the varnish. Take your time and progress from 40-60 grit, to 80, 100,120 180, etc., through 400 minimum. You may not think the grit gradations are too small, but there is a visible difference in surface finish if the steps are large. I used 400 & 800 grit pads in between coats of urethane. Works great. The dust collector bag gets in the way and comes lose easily, therefore does not prevent sanding dust from spreading. Can use batteries from other DeWalt tools which makes it very versatile.

The DEWALT 20V MAX orbital sander is an excellent tool. It has plenty of power for removing material quickly, but it also runs smooth enough for fine finishing work. The variable speed control is great for dialing it in depending on the job. I love not having to deal with a cord — being cordless makes it easy to move around the shop or job site without fighting extension cords. Battery life is solid, especially with a 4Ah or 5Ah battery, and it swaps discs quickly with the hook-and-loop pad. Dust collection works well when hooked to a vac, and vibration is minimal compared to cheaper sanders. It feels durable and well balanced in the hand. My adult spending money has allowed me to collect an impressive arsenal of DeWalt 20v tools, but I hesitated to get this sander simply because I thought it would have a short run time on batteries while my corded sander can go and go. I read a lot of reviews and they were all pretty consistent that battery life in this sander was incredibly long and powerful, plus I wanted the convenience of a cordless for out of the shop use. I pushed Buy It Now and I'm so glad I did. As long as you use a 5amp hour battery for your bigger projects, this DeWalt is a powerhouse! It is just as strong as my corded, and it has a gradual spin up start so it doesn't take off with you. I've been using it exclusively since. I've gotten 2 hours of heavy sanding off one fully charged battery. One thing to be aware of: fine dust particles will make it into the battery-tool junction electrodes, interfering with charging. I found out when I had a battery on the charger with a green light, but it was dead. There was a very fine yet consistent film of wood dust on the electrode fins. I brushed them off with a soft bristle brush and it began to charge again. I occasionally brush off the tool electrodes as well so there is good contact. I picked up this DEWALT 20V MAX orbital sander in August 2025 to go with the rest of my DEWALT 20V tools, and it’s been a really useful addition. I already own a couple of corded orbitals (including a Bosch that’s my main workhorse), so I’ve been using this mostly when I want portability instead of raw speed. Adjustability & vibration: The variable speed is great when you need to be gentle on a surface or slow things down, and you can turn it up when you want more bite. For the way I work, I usually just want to get material off quickly, and this simply doesn’t spin as fast or cut as aggressively as my corded Bosch. Vibration feels normal for an orbital—comfortable enough, but not some night‑and‑day improvement. Value & dust collection: I got it on a really good sale, and for a cordless tool that can go anywhere, I think the value is solid. This is the sander I toss in a bag and bring to a job site; I’m not dragging cords and extension reels. Dust collection is about what you’d expect: the bag helps, but you’ll still have dust on the workpiece and in the air. Nothing bad, just not amazing. Ease of use & durability: It’s very easy to use. The tool feels light in the hand, and swapping batteries or sandpaper is quick. With a decent battery it keeps up fine, and after multiple projects it still runs like it did out of the box. Overall, I really like this as a portable sander and would happily recommend it if you’re already on the DEWALT 20V platform. It’s just not as fast as a strong corded orbital, so for me it’s a solid four‑star tool instead of a full five. I was hesitant after reading and watching reviews of this sander and how soo many said the dust collection was very poor. That couldnt be further from the truth! This thing literally and visibly pulls it right out of the air. This dewalt sander with no vac attached leaves far lest dust than my Makita with the vaccume attached. Its performance is as expected with dewalt flawless. With a 5ah battery its not as bad as people claim. Its not pulling or terribly off balance and the 5ah battery lasts pretty long. I suggest having 2 5ah to cycle as im sure it will eat through 2ah. I couldnt be happier with it. Again dust is almost non existent without even attaching a suction system, which is unbelievable. If you're hesitant because of the reviews of poor dust collection and it being awkward dont be. Just buy it you wont be disappointed! Sorry red people yellow takes the win every time ive compared personally. ... show more
