In addition to a large Christmas gift, I wanted to have something to wrap to go under the tree for my daughter. I will admit I was initially disappointed at the small package. I thought it looked dinky. Imagine my surprise and delight when she reported that two of the three trees sprouted and grew immediately; the third one was much slower, but that was noted in the planting instructions, and she is enjoying three small trees already. All 3 of mine have sprouted and I only used 3 seeds in each pot…the Rosewood has grown as I discovered this morning while watering….there is 3 small sprouts under the top layer of soil! I didn’t use a heating mat but I did place all three of these under a grow light. The seeds and materials are great. Bonsai’s require a lot more attention than other easy grow plants. Follow the directions and if you put a few minutes in every morning and spray the soil with conditioned or distilled water they will grow. They’re not a set it and forget it type plant. The effort is up to you! Update: I transplanted my bonsai’s in a Bio Substrate and they are growing like crazy. I gave 3 away to my nephew and I still have six. 5/17/25

I bought this kit back in november of 2024. I forgot about it because, life. About a month ago, i found it again and said "why not? I'm home all day anyways, got nothing better, lets see if i can get this to work." I don't think i have a green thumb, i just know how to bring plants back to life after finding them half dead, selling at the grocery store for $3. Here's the thing though. Don't go completely by the instructions. First things first: the instructions say: "put the seed in a damp papertowel for 24 hrs." INSTEAD: put the seed in a wet paper towel for about a week in a ziplock bag/container and wait until you see the seeds sprout. I had mine set out on the banister of my stairs so that i had to walk past them a few times a day and they get the best lighting there, so more warmth. Second: The instructions tell you to soak the soil discs with 1/2 a cup of warm water. INSTEAD: do 3/4 of a cup and stay with it. Break them apart a little at a time. Mine were so dried out and compacted they took almost a cup of water each and it took nearly 45 minutes for them to be fully broken apart. Third: The instructions tell you the soil for the Brazilian Rosewood has to be AT LEAST 85°F at all times for the seeds to grow and to use a heatpad if necessary. INSTEAD: Don't use a heat pad. Don't use anything to keep it warm, because they'll grow just fine at 70°F-75°F degrees in your home. I have 2 sprouts and we have our HVAC set at 70°F-73°F. Some days when the sun is out we have about 75°F/76°F in the house. My black spruce isn't doing much, and i expected as much too. The seeds didn't really sprout in the paper towel. I water them once a week (usually mondays) with 1oz of water each, drizzled over the whole little pot. I still want to get a small sprayer bottle to keep the topsoil moist. They look very healthy and i'm stoked to see what they'll look like in a week, a month, a year, 2 years. I love that i have two spruces and the rosewood. It gives me a variety of bonsais rather than three or four or maybe even 7 of the same. (Will update as they grow and progress)

Followed the directions: soaked the seeds over night and planted only 3 per container to eliminate overcrowding. I water with spray bottle daily. I keep the Brazilian rosewood outdoors as specified. They sprouted within 1-2 weeks and now are about 1-2 inches tall (with exception to the Brazilian rosewood which has a much longer germination time) and has been growing slowly. I can’t wait to continue watching them grow. The pictures included are taken on June 19 (less than a month after planted on 5/22)

I’d like to say I’ve never actually planted flowers and stuff like that so far I’ve gotten 5 out of 6 seeds to grow to about 3 inches so far I left the seeds in a damp paper towel for a week or so till the seeds popped and then planted I mixed the disc they give with bonsai soil even though it says not to and planted them in a permanent pot then soaked it really good I even didn’t water them for 2 weeks because I had the wrong soil after actually reading the instructions thought I messed up just to look up and see 5 strong stems going so now I water regularly I’m very satisfied with the seeds I planted the Colorado blue spruce and black spruce now I’m going for cherry blossom and red maple
