This is my first electric kettle, and it's now my favorite appliance. I drink instant coffee, and this is so simple to use in the morning. It's those little things that make the morning that much nicer - like a good bath towel. Yes, it's plastic, but it's very light and I assume doesn't leach chemicals into the water. Anyway, it seems solid, but I've only used it a few dozen times. The reason I even came to this review page is to see if others were having occasional trouble with the on/off switch. And I see others have mentioned the on-off swirch can be finicky, especially if you have wet hands (or a wet thunb to be precise). Maybe the swith needs more of a ridge or grooves to have a better grip. Also as others mention, the lid doesn't easily come off, but it's also nice that the lid doesn't get separated. it doesn't need to be reattached, and it opens with a press of a button. Unlike an earlier version of this product, this one can be turned off manually. The old one would only shut off if/when it decided to. That one conked out after a few years. This new version is better, safer. I more recently bought a larger electric kettle with a glass carafe. Soon the water left unsightly but oh-so-visible deposits. The Bodum is opaque, so the deposits are not visible. It is an attractive, simple no-nonsense design - could say elegant - and does its job well. This one is a keeper and is used almost every day. I love the design of this kettle. I was worried it might be a little flimsy but it’s solid and boils water incredibly fast. The auto shutoff feature is fantastic - no more stopping everything to watch the kettle. I never drink more than two cups of tea each day, so this tea kettle is perfect. Let my coffee-drinking family have the big old Keurig because I love this little water kettle. I keep one at home and one at work. I bought covers for them so that dust won’t collect in the spout. One sixteen ounce bottle of water (and your favorite tea bags) are all that you need. When we went on vacation, I easily packed it in my carry-on. Voila! Hot tea on the go. I read all of the reviews before purchasing & noted some negative experiences other purchasers reported. Thankfully, I have not experienced any of those problems. Maybe it’s because I ordered the white 2-cup kettles (so that I can see the water at the bottom of the kettle). Or that I only use it twice a day. Or that I’m willing to wait 5 minutes for my water to boil. Who knows? What I do know is that this kettle meets all of my needs. I even gifted one to a friend who had admired mine during a visit. (She loves it, too.) BTW, I’ve been asked where I got the protective cover for my kettle. After a recent trip to London, I came back a tea drinker, and a fan of electric kettles. Not long after clearing customs back in the U.S., I started looking for an electric kettle. I initially bought a larger kettle from another manufacturer, but returned it due to the poor quality (lid seemed to melt after going through the pre-use cleaning process) and the fact that 1.7L was just too large for me. Neither my roommate or girlfriend are tea drinkers, so I am usually making tea for one (or sometimes two). Accordingly the old kettle, which had a minimum fill equal to the full fill on this kettle, was wasteful to use. After searching high and low, this seemed to be the only quality kettle I could find that was well suited for a solo drinker. It is priced higher than I would have liked (pricier than the larger one, actually). However, I have been very happy with the kettle. Filling it about halfway is perfect for a larger cup of tea for one, and filling to the max works out well for two. The unit is quiet, and the plastic gets warm but not unbearably hot like the stainless steel ones. Boiled down (no pun intended), here are the pros and cons: Pros -Small, perfect for tea for 1 or 2 -Compact on the countertop -Quick boil -Seems well built -Not ugly Cons -Plastic almost all the way around, except for the heating unit at the bottom -Black looks good, but might have purchased the red one in retrospect -Lid opens a bit awkwardly - it spins in place and is suspended above the reservoir, which makes for an awkward fill at times ... show more
