I mean, it's a climbing 8. We've had 'em for 50 years. There's stuff to talk about that deals with climbing 8's in general, and then I suppose there's stuff to deal with Black Diamond 8's in particular. So let's get the general stuff outta the way: - There isn't really a way to lock this off with just the device; you need to do a leg wrap or something similar - The friction you start with is the friction you end with - These are mostly out of favor; if you go into a climbing gym or a guided trip with one of these, you are liable to garner some funny looks. - You have to disconnect your carabiner from your belay loop to disconnect these when used properly. - There are various bits of internet advice floating around out there (like "Sport mode" 8) that might actually kill you However, all of the above can be mitigated. If you want to add friction while on rappel, you can attach a wiregate carabiner to your leg loop or gear loop or hip belt and use it to gather more friction. You can lock these off with a leg loop. You can belay with these, and they're actually pretty friendly, especially if you're wearing thicker gloves. Now, with the BD 8's in particular, there are some things to be aware of: - The thermal mass on these is quite low. They'll get hot on rappel. Much hotter than some of the comparable units here - There are many lower-cost alternatives available. And this isn't exactly high-tech stuff; this kinda thing has been cloned ad infinitum for decades. - This 8, in particular, doesn't do double-strand over about 10.5-11mm-ish very well. - This 8 is thin enough it'll slip through a 10mm quicklink. By itself. It won't fit through an 8mm rapide. So if you're using this as a releasable anchor in places where rapides are common, you should probably not use this on very thin lines (like the 6mm lines that are becoming popular) to make a releasable anchor. It won't really fit through a 10mm rapide with 6 or 7mm line tied in a Euro or compact style releasable line, but some people like to act out of an abundance of caution. Standard sized 8's won't fit. - This is kinda pricey for what you get. ... show more
