I’m an old school rappelling guy so decided to try out some more updated current gear available on the market. When I say “old school”, I’m a 101st ABN DIV Air Assault qualified infantryman. The gear I used for climbing and rappelling back in my Army days is pretty primitive compared to the civilian stuff available. I wanted something that’s simple to use and strong but, lightweight. This nifty little figure 8 device definitely meets all the requirements I was looking for and it’s a Black Diamond product, which I trust. I was looking at the other figure 8 devices available but decided to pass on them since they were mostly Chinese made products and I was not going to trust my life to something that might fail on me even if they “claim” to have the proper rating and certification. Nope, I do not trust them so went with the Black Diamond Super 8 and have zero regrets. It performed as expected and locking in was pretty easy if you know what you’re doing. I like the size and appearance, which makes it easy to clip onto your harness for transporting. The other Chinese made devices looked bulky and I don’t trust their craftsmanship and materials they possibly used. Last thing I need is for it to suddenly snap and break while suspended in the air. If I die accidentally I want it to be my own fault, not because I chose an inferior product. Buy the tested and proven brands especially if your life depends upon it… ... show more

Took this belay device on a canyoneering trip. We rappelled 5 times on a double rope configuration. It worked really well for me because it allowed for the perfect amount of friction to slow my descent. This was my first time rappelling and it was very easy to navigate. Everyone seems to count out Figure 8's these days. The negative is they can twist your rope, and you need to know how to use them properly. Knowing how is easy...to be honest, if you aren't smart enough to use these right, I don't want to climb with you. The Fig 8 doesn't have problems with heat buildup that can destroy your rope. They're very low cost & light weight. GriGri's are great, but 5 times the price. many climbing gym's no longer allow a Fig 8 and many companies don't make them....FYI, I looked at the Chinese 8's. They're not rated by UIAA, heavy, bulky and not worth the price. If you have the $$$ buy a GriGri or BD ATC or similar. Knowing how to use a Fig 8 is easy. ... show more
