  • Perfect for cultivating between plants; can use a modified Porter Cable 20v battery
Style: 20V Cultivator/Tiller Kit
This is a handy item for cultivating between plants or in other tight spots. It lacks the power to get through hard soil, but can easily handle cultivating in tilled soil or a raised bed. The back and forth motion of the tines does an excellent job for general cultivating or for when top dressing with fertilizers. The build quality is better than I expected. It's mostly plastic, but has a good, solid feel to it. The tines are sturdy and, so far, have had no problems dealing with the occasional rock. Assembly is straightforward, although fitting the pins to hold the tines is a bit fussy. Be sure to wear gloves (the tines are sharp) and use a pair of pliers, and they will get seated properly. If you have Porter Cable 20v batteries, they can easily be modified to fit this. All you need to do is cut a slot near the groove where the battery slides into the tool. It's a two minute operation with a Dremel, and the added slot does not cause any problems using the Porter Cable battery with a Porter Cable tool or charger. There are videos on how to do it, but all you really need to do is look at the two batteries side by side, and it's apparent where the slot needs to be cut. So far it's been a champ -- five stars. ... show more

  • Great tiller/weeder for small spaces
Style: 20V Cultivator/Tiller Kit
The media could not be loaded. I had a flower bed approximately 8’x12’ that since last season had become grown over with clover/small weeds/grass (about 2-3” in height). I also had existing plants growing so I couldn’t just rototill the whole thing. I wanted to churn up the weeds/grass and also till the soil to plant some annuals. My soil is rather thick clay. This tiller was perfect, the first pass it grabbed up a lot of the weeds/ground cover- I would have to stop and clean out the tongs every couple feet but I expected this due to the amount of weeds and clay soil. It only took me a couple seconds to pull out the weeds then go on. After I got the layer of weeds off, I was able to go slower and press deeper into the soil to churn it up and get it ready for planting. The tiller was pretty easy to maneuver around existing plants/fence. As you can see in the last photo I was able to get quite close to the daylily in the top of the frame. This is more a tiller than a weeder but it saved me hours of backbreaking work pulling out weeds and grass by hand. It also made easy work of prepping my thick wet clay soil for planting. I found it worked best to press lightly on the first pass and focus on getting up the weeds and removing them from the tongs. I then made a second pass pressing deeper and going slowly to churn up the soil for planting. I was very pleased with the maneuvering ability and I never felt like it was going to go out of control even when I got a part of the wire fence caught up (totally my fault- I just released the trigger and it shut off instantly without damaging the tiller or fence). I am very pleased with this tiller- it was perfect for my flower beds and I can see it being useful in my larger garden when I just want to plant a small area and don’t want to get the big rototiller out. It also is useful for going along the edges of gardens to get stray grass and weeds. I was surprised that the tiller seemed to excel at getting larger weeds- it pulled them up by the roots and while I had to pull them off the tongs it wasn’t a big issue. I highly recommend this for the home gardener, especially if you’re like me and a bit intimidated of using a larger gas powered rototiller but hate prepping your garden by hand. This tiller didn’t get heavy or hurt my back either and I’m not an especially strong person. I got about 30 mins of battery life off 2 hours charging (I got impatient and didn’t wait for it to fully charge) so I imagine a full charge would be plenty for an average flower garden. ... show more

  • Does what I need it to do
Style: 20V Cultivator/Tiller Kit
I pretty much wore out my Ryobi cultivator I got for $99 when they first came out.. It was 18 volt but had a lot more power than this B&D 20 volt version. But when it comes to this type of tiller there is not a lot to choose from. WARNING: This is not a tool to break ground. The tool will break before the ground does. This tool is for already broken in ground that has soft dirt. It won't break up hard clay or compacted dirt. It is just not powerful enough. When I was testing it I realized I need to break up the ground with my weedeater tiller end first. My weedeater tiller end does ok to break up the top few inches. If you have a lot of clay consider working in some gypsum for a few years. It's amazing the difference it makes. It has been hard to find local but maybe Amazon still sells it. What this is good for is weeding and aerating your garden over the summer when it's dry so when it does rain the rain soaks in. But that is all it really does. I like it because it gets the small areas and I can do it myself because it is not too bulky. I don’t have the strength to use the manual ones… bad shoulder…. Some need something like this. I let a lot of older people try mine when they showed interest so they could see if it would help them. Works great in my hummingbird habitat out front. The ground is still wet in some areas, if the soil is wet the tines are so close spaced they will clog up. If you can't wait for it to dry then till a little and lift so it empties, Sometimes you just have to pull out the mud plug. It cultivates dry soil just fine so long as the dirt is not hard compacted. It's only good for already well tilled areas. If you need something to do more then get a tiny tiller and save yourself the irritation. I got a refurbished one and it came with a battery for under $100. But in all honesty? I do not think this is worth the money they are asking and then you still have to invest in the battery and charger. If you need something that is more versatile and heavy duty just get a small tiller for about the same money. But if you need something for weeding a well established garden then this is ok... just expensive. ... show more
