I have been using an 8+ year old (not exactly sure when I got it, maybe 10 years ago) Kmart special. I tell you this to understand what I'm comparing this machine with. We have a golden retriever, two cats and several little dirt trodders in our house. Did I mention we live in the desert where you always have a thin film of dirt on your floors? It took my husband using our vacuum to realize how badly we needed a new one. Some looking and price assessing led us to this one. Read many reviews right here on Amazon as well as Google searching and decided to give it a go. I am not disappointed! The suction is wonderful! It pulled pet hair and even some cat claws right off of the living room rug (that had just been vacuumed the night before, twice). I think the length of the cord is fine, but I've never had a vacuum that could go through my entire house on one plug. It differentiates between my tile, carpet and rugs quickly! You can hear the change and there is even a suction adjuster right on the handle. *Pay attention to this adjuster as it may cause you to not have suction and think it's not working very well if you accidentally have it on the plush carpet setting instead of bare floor. Since I'm not used to this feature, I thought my vacuum had issues on the second use. It will get right up along the wall and pick up cat litter whether you push it alongside the wall or right up to it from the front. The crevice tool also has an led light that is bright! The lights in the front of the main vacuum are also bright and really show the dirt. It's not a heavy machine, in my opinion, but it's not super light either. It maneuvers with a smoothness I've never felt before in a vacuum. I do not have any cons for this machine as of yet. It's exactly what I was hoping to purchase. Maybe my expectations are lower than others, but it's a huge improvement upon my upright vacuum and my robot vacuum (which we really only use to try to help keep down the dusty dirt layer and pet hair from the tile). I wish any potential vacuum buyer luck in finding what works for their house. Edit: I found a small con, for me. The canister empties from the bottom. The top of the canister also opens up for cleaning with a slight twist. I was used to twisting and shaking my old canister piece to get everything out and accidental loosened the top part. Hubby accused me of trashing the new vacuum. Also, if you pick up a ton of hair, it does stick towards the top of the canister, but pulls out easily. ... show more

I tried and returned 2 Hoovers before I decided to try a Bissell. I have never owned a Bissell. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this vacuum. It is lighter than the Hoover, which caused a lot of pain in my back trying to maneuver it on the carpet. The Bissell is lighter and is so much easier to use. The attachments work very well also. It is easy to clean and works well with adjusting to different carpet heights. The only thing negative I can say is the cord would not stay in the slot to keep it out of the way and the hose popped out of its holder a couple of times. Overall I was really impressed with my first Bissell purchase. Plus I don't think it is that big of a deal where the on off switch is. I don't know why people are so put off with the placement of it. I was much more concerned with the suction power and ease of use and the attachments being decent. Also the brush roll does not get dog hair twisted onto it. That is a big plus in my book also. My Dyson finally died and I decided to try something different. I chose this vacuum based on previous reviews and my needs. I am completely happy and impressed with this vacuum especially for the price. I can't speak to durability for now, only time will tell. Pros: - Lightweight and maneuverable, no problems getting into tight spaces that the dyson was unable to. The edges of the head are close enough to the ground to slide under the couch and dressers. - Great suction without having to muscle the vacuum over carpeted surfaces. Even thin, light carpets don't get pulled up into the head like other vacuums - The brush covers the entire surface of the head (no support bearings that leave unvacuumed strips). - The detachable hose and attachments are well designed and the hose is flexible enough to actually use without knocking over the vacuum or dragging it around. - The LED light makes it easy to see what needs picking up, especially dog hair on hardwood floor. Cons: - The auto sense is a little obnoxious cycling on and off when you are running over small area rugs, but it works well. - The cord is a little short and I cannot go as far as I used to. - The lever to empty the dust bin release is at the bottom with the lid, which results in a bit of dust blowing outside the trash can. For example, the Dyson had the lever at the top on the handle so you could push the canister all the way into the trash can before releasing the lid to prevent most of the dust from escaping. ... show more

I had a Dyson Pet for over 20 years. I was finally in need of a new vacuum but didn't like the reviews I had been seeing on the new Dysons. So, I went with this Bisell. What I like is, how smooth the transition is from hardwood to rugs and not needing to make any adjustments. Suction is really good. It is easy to maneuver. Love the lights and the tools as well as the canister being able to detach to use the tools. It is not as heavy as the Dyson, which is great because I am a Senior. What I don't like is the length of the cord. It could be a little longer. I was able to vacuum my whole downstairs using one plug with my Dyson. The cord on this is a little shorter. The other thing is how the cord is attached. When vacuuming, you have to hold the cord up in your hand because it is so low on the vacuum. I know it is because it is a detachable but it would be nice if there where 1 or 2 places on the detachable part where you could attach the cord up higher while vacuuming. Something like what is on the back of the plug so you can attach the plug to the cord when done. This way, you can easily detach the cord when you are using the detachable part of the vacuum. I have 3 German Shepherds that shed 24/7, 365 days a year so I need a vacuum that will hold up. This one, so far, seems durable. Time will tell! ... show more
