This little doodad is a prime example of what has gone wrong with the internet of things (IoT). All by itself, it's capable of doing all kinds of things via its own app. Turn things on, turn things off, change device functions, and so on. It can collect up nearly every remote in your house and replace them. If it doesn't know your device, you can teach it. It's like the universal remote of the 90s on steroids, seeing what Logitech did with its Harmony remote in 2001 and bettered it. Then it took that a step further and integrated voice control by linking in Google Assistant, Alexa, and Siri. But does it work great? Nah. It's a bit of a hassle really, particularly on Google Assistant (I don't have a way to test the other two, sorry.) Let's start with the hardware. It's a tiny little thing that needs a USB connection for power. Not too difficult to come by these days. But it also needs a solid view of anything you want to control. Think of it like you standing there with the physical remote. If you can't see the device you want to control, your remote doesn't work, right? Same with this guy. If the fan you want to control is turned the other way, same deal. This sort of thing isn't in the manual, nor any indication of how to choose a good spot. You're on your own to figure it out. On the positive side, you can manage more than one of these at a time from the app. So, like, one in every room you want to control stuff with. How well does it do its job? It's ok. The app tries its best. Big name brand items it probably has in its database, while offbrand or uncommon devices are a jumble. The app does allow you to program a missing item and submit it to the second, user, database, and, you may be able to find your device there if it doesn't have anything in the official one. Note, the functions may not all work - you're gambling on some stranger out there on the internet to have done a good job and not just gotten the functions working that they wanted and left the rest broken. In my testing, control through the app worked most of the time. I did run into user submitted controls that were half baked, which wasn't a surprise. Now we get to the voice control portion. See, Google Assistant was more than happy to link with Broadlink and let me use it to control devices. There's a catch though - only some of the controls are available through voice by default. For example, my fan. It has all the typical features - on/off, oscillate, speed up, slow down, run for X amount of time. Google Assistant though, says I can turn it on or off. That's it. Full integration just isn't there. Looking around at similar devices, the same complaint goes on and on. And if you try to setup a custom device, Google Assistant will ignore it entirely. Taking a bit of the "universal'' away, no? Who is at fault here, Broadlink or Google? I have no honest answer there for you. But, I do have a workaround. It's all about the Scenes in the app. If a given button works in the app and you want to use it with Google Assistant, even for a custom device, it can be done. How you do this is by creating a Scene in the Broadlink app which activates whatever virtual button you want pushed. That scene gets picked up by Google Assistant automatically, it doesn't care, it's just the middleman passing info from you to Broadlink. Using my fan as the example, I can now tell Google Assistant to 'activate fan swing' and the fan starts/stops oscillating. To test this further, I snagged an LED strip, taught the app how to control it, and then setup a few scenes for various button pushes. Bam! Full control of the LEDs via Google Assistant. But really, it shouldn't be this difficult to do. Clearly the technology is there, the capability is there, but because we're dealing with multiple standards, we end up with something that only partially works as it should. This puts me in a tough position for reviewing this item. Without the voice stuff taken into account, it's a 4 star for me. But part of its advertising and appeal is the full voice integration, which isn't all that full without using workarounds, and I can't determine who to pin that on. For now, I'm going to pin it on Google, as they have a habit of breaking stuff, years after people have settled into it, in order to 'improve' it. 5 stars - Excellent/Perfect - This is the stuff right here, folks! Rare gem. 4 stars - Good/Great - Has a lot going for it, even if not perfect 3 stars - Ok - Not bad, but doesn’t have anything particularly special about it 2 stars - Not so good - More cons than pros on this little number 1 star - Don’t walk, run away - No redeeming qualities

As far as I know, "BestCon" is not a household name in the IR market space. However, this worked just as well as the big-name company. It's also currently listed for a very reasonable price!

I tried to make this work to control the blinds in my house. It doesn't work with 5GHZ, so I even disabled 5GHZ to try to make it work. I wasted an hour on this piece of garbage. I moved to the Bond device and I had it set up and running for 5 different blinds in under 10 minutes. Now the Bond is $99, so a lot more expensive, but this is one of the cases where you get what you pay for.

I tried for over an hour to get this to connect & it never did. The instructions are tiny print. They have a scan code for everything except the directions (a PDF link would be helpful) or the app link (to download the app), on the instruction guide. It looks cool but it’s useless for me.
