  • Exceeded Expectations in Quality, Value, and Uses
I rated this potting bench five stars first of all for the overall experience of ordering, receiving, assembly, value, and usefulness of the product. The vendor apprised me of my order status, I received it earlier than projected, and received the disassembled bench in perfect condition, as it was packed very well. From past experiences with so many different manufacturers, I almost come to expect something to be missing from a box of parts, but not so with this potting bench. Every piece was there, to include the hardware; it was all well marked, or otherwise easily identifiable as not to be mixed up with similar pieces. The instructions are in picture format, but just as well, as they are easy to follow, and I can see where words may actually confuse the situation in some cases. I did keep a picture of a completely assembled bench close by so as to look at it from time to time so as not to get my lefts confused with my rights, and you may want to do the same to keep you on track with correct assembly, but I did not find this to be distracting to the overall experience. Every piece was quality wood, with no defects of any sort in any piece, which also pleasantly surprised me, as this seems to not be the norm nowadays. What I did, and I advise everyone to do the same, is immediately upon taking the pieces out of the box, I spread them out and coated them with a weatherproofing (I used Thompson’s). Doing so when still unassembled is so much easier and you are sure to get all the nooks and crannies. You may want to buy this prior to the bench arriving so you can get immediately to work on it when it arrives. Minus the time it took to apply weatherproofing, it is relatively a quick procedure of about 45 minutes, and when done, it is extremely sturdy, but light enough to move around easily; I’m putting mine in the garage during the harsh, windy winter here in Colorado, and I did it by myself, didn’t need two people to move it. Now, another great thing about this potting bench is the fact that by naming it “potting bench”, it may seem that this is its only use, but not so, and I think this same bench could be listed in multiple categories with only a slight name change applied. This is an absolute PERFECT bench to have close by your grill when cooking outdoors as it has everything the grill cook is looking for when BBQ’ing. Not too big, not too small, it has the table area for your items to grill, or already been grilled, hooks, drawer, smaller top shelf, and I am seriously thinking about getting another one of these benches for that purpose only. So far I’ve used it for both potting and grilling at different times as both tasks are done in the same general area. This bench could easily be sold in a grilling accessories section and not be out of place. I also cannot believe the affordable price of this bench, and with its low cost, sturdiness, ease of assembly and multi-uses, it is one of the best values I’ve scored in my life. I most heartily recommend this bench to anyone looking for a potting-grilling buddy. ... show more

  • Very nice & great value but basically a DIY kit Very nice & great value but basically a DIY kit
First of all, I love it. It’s absolutely worth the money. It’s large, it’s sturdy, and it’s much more convenient than building one myself. It does everything I need it to do. However, a few things to take note of. 1. Wear gloves while assembling because this thing is perfectly designed to fill your hands with dozens of splinters. 2. This is essentially just raw, pre cut wood with a few poorly done pre drilled holes. You NEED a power drill to assemble this, or it’ll take you several hours and one hell of a headache. 3. The directions are oddly vague. Pay CLOSE attention and constantly refer back to previous images- pay attention to the location of the pre drilled holes because for whatever reason they are unmarked in the directions, making this a bit confusing. 4. It’s not really square? When you kind of jam everything together it works out but make sure you’re lining things up carefully so they are at least kind of level or it becomes a real pain 5. you’re looking for a family heirloom this ain’t it. If you’re looking for something cheap to last a few years it’s perfect. The wood doesn’t appear to be sealed with anything and is very soft wood- I’d be concerned about moisture / rotting very quickly. I will be sealing this with a coat of polyurethane to try and prevent that and I’d suggest you do the same. I am absolutely happy with the purchase to be clear and assembly only took 30 minutes but I am covered in splinters and my eyes hurt from squinting at the directions. May the odds be in your favor. ... show more

  • Pretty and sturdy, but pay attention when assembling
As several people have mentioned, there are no guide holes. There is a hole in the piece where the screw enters, but not in the other piece where the screw attaches. Luckily, the wood is pretty soft, so there's no problem getting the screws to "bite" and screw in. Unluckily, this means there is also no guide to keep your screw going straight, so if you go a little crooked, the screw tears through the surface diagonally, leaving a big hole. I followed another reviewer's advice to build the drawer first, so I only made my one ugly crooked screw hole on the inside of the drawer, where no one will see it. The visual issue with missing guide holes is really only a problem with the drawer tracks. With no positioning marks, you're really just guessing where it will look/slide best. This also means you can put the drawer on the left or right side, but I recommend following that other guy's advice and using the actual drawer to determine where your drawer tracks should be attached. I assembled it myself, and it only took about half an hour, but I can understand why other people are irritated. Just be really aware, look closely, and set everything up before you attach the screws. It's super cute when it's complete, and seems really sturdy. I have mine outside on the lanai, so I'm not worried about the weather, but I might give it a blast of clear coat just for looks. It's a pretty color, the perfect height, and the real wood smell was nice right out of the box (I can't smell it outside). I do wish they had included one of those cheap little flat wrenches, which come in most of these self-assembly kits. I had to use an adjustable wrench to tighten the bolts, and I don't think I got them as tight as I could've. I recommend fully tightening these bolts last, after everything else is plumb, by the way -- I had to jostle the whole thing a little to get some holes to line up. ... show more

  • Fantastic and a Great Value
I have been shopping around for several weeks, both in stores, and online, looking for the perfect potting bench for my side patio. This product suits my needs to a T. The construction is sound and of good wood quality, the lattice back is a very nice aesthetic detail, and it is absolutely ideal for housing all of my pots and garden materials, featuring a slide-out drawer, decorative hooks, and corbel detail. Assembly is easy and took me no time at all. All the parts were in the package with accompanying screws. I did a lot of comparison shopping, and this was such an incredible price, far less expensive than comparable vendors with the same relative product. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for great style, sound construction, and incredible value. ... show more

  • Had TONS of trouble with the drawer
On the positive side - the bench looks great, and was pretty easy to put together with the exception of the drawer. The instructions could have been clearer. I did elect to use an electric screwdriver rather than the small manual one included in the box. I had trouble with a few of the smaller pieces splitting, but it could have been due to electric screwdriver driving the screws too tight. But the drawer! 1 - the top of the bench has room between the slats for water to get through - into the drawer. I drilled holes into the drawer bottom for drainage, but it still had standing water. 2 - the measurements for the drawers was HORRIBLE! When putting the tracks on, it's too wide for the drawer. We had to put another piece of wood as the spacer to make it work - it was over a 1/4" off. After messing with it for over an hour, I got it to work. Then found standing water in it this morning, despite my 12 drainage holes. Also - the sprinkler hit the bench this morning (hubby has to adjust those today!), and there is white glue smeared on the bench top - looks like it's glue the manufacturer applied pre sale. Anyway - okay potting bench if you're okay with not using the drawer. I do feel it's priced too high for the product it is. Once it's dried out from the sprinkler water, I'll be spraying it with a water sealant. ... show more

  • What you save in $ you pay in sweat equity but worth it!
I love this bench. I would have given it five stars but for a few issues I came across. The bench comes with an instruction manual which says the only tools required are a Philips head screwdriver and a wrench, it says it takes only one person and should take about 45 minutes to put together. About the tools, the wrench is fine but there are 54 screws to fasten (and there is only a hole in one board so you are going to drill through the board you are attaching to entirely by hand). Fifty four screws are a lot to do by hand. They also say that one person can build it alone-I did but I had to use other furniture to prop things up. The directions say it will take approximately 45 minutes to do- it took me three hours and I was using a cordless drill. I am fairly used to putting furniture together ( lots of IKEA furniture at our house) so I’m used to reading directions. The directions given are a picture of the bench, midair, being pulled apart. I’d prefer the directions to tell me in what order to build things to make the process easier. The wood is very light and so it’s easy to carry and move. Even though it said that it was weather proofed I added a varnish (the type you’d use for your boat) to seal it since I live in a hot and humid climate. The instruction manual that came with the bench says that it has a 45 pound total capacity, on the product description it says 100 pounds and 150 pounds depending on where you look. I am not sure which one is correct. The bench is very attractive and super convenient and I’d buy it again. ... show more

  • Best Potting Bench; a Great Value !! Best Potting Bench; a Great Value !!
THIS POTTING BENCH IS A GREAT VALUE!! I've purchased and assembled many pieces of knocked-down items for use around the home yet, I was extremely impressed with the quality of the materials and hardware that are included with this potting bench. For example, I found no damaged components while assembling this bench; there was no missing hardware; all of the hardware appeared to be of high quality, that is, none of the heads of the screws or bolts felt as if they wanted to shear off under torque. Moreover, ALL of the pre-drilled holes lined up perfectly which is a significant departure from most other pieces of knocked-down products. The potting bench was sent to NJ from a warehouse in Kentucky. It arrived quickly and was packaged and protected very professionally. Although the assembly directions had no words, the pictorials were more than self-explanatory. The completed potting bench is exactly as shown on the website, it's sturdy, and the clear protective finish is very obvious. The potting bench was placed in our back yard. I will be purchasing a retro glass drawer pull for the one drawer. I may also add a stop for the drawer. Again, a great buy! Follow-Up to my review...... 7/72017 I had intended to add a cover over the drawer to keep rain water and potting debris from falling through the slats into the drawer; I've now completed that cover (see photo). Using 1/4" pre-sanded plywood, I measured and fabricated the cover to fit the length and width of the drawer beneath the slats. Using #8 x 3/8 flat head philips wood screws, I drilled pilot holes and then secured the cover to the slats being careful not to interfere with existing hardware or, the drawer itself. I then applied a coat of marine varnish to the cover. I also added a retro steel drawer pull (not glass) nickel plated, to match the tool hooks at the side of the bench. All that remains now is installing a drawer stop to prevent the drawer from being pulled all the way out and falling. I'll first have to turn the bench on it's side in order to access the underside to install the stop. 2nd Follow-Up; 7/26/2017 Update: Some rain water was still able to collect in the drawer despite the cover. Potting soil, however, does not fall into the drawer through the slats since I installed the cover. Securing an inside drawer Stop was not possible with the drawer in place. I did, however, fabricate a Stop, securing it to the exterior side of the drawer, permitting it to strike the RH leg of the bench, preventing the drawer from falling out. I first screwed a flat 'L' shaped corner brace to a block of wood (see photo) and then, screwed the brace directly to the side of the drawer. (I located the Stop several inches from the back of the drawer.) ... show more
