Not Perfect, but Still the Best

I 've own a two family house and have been growing tired of clearing hair out of the pipes in my apartment and my tenant's appartment. Looking for the perfect hair-catcher, we bought 4 different strainers, a big plastic strainer, a micro-hole chrome strainer that looks like a miniature version of your kitchen sink strainer, a wire-mesh strainer that looked like a tea strainer without a handle, and the TubShroom strainer. We are using it in a tube with a manual-pop-up drain, with a chrome flange, but no built-in screen. Before telling you the outcome, I need to advise that a regular tub screen has a a plain brass drain underneath, so you might not like the look of your drain after you remove the screen. My tube's drain has a chrome-plated flange with a manual pup-up plug that you tap with your toe to open and close. It has no built-in screen to cover the drain, which is why the drain has a chrome flange. We tried each strainer and here are the results. The big plastic strainer caught some of the big hairs, but let a lot of hair slip underneath. It did not catch any small hairs. It was the worse of the four. The micro-hole chrome strainer was an outstanding hair catcher and super easy to clean. Just wipe your finger once across and you have the complete pile of long and short hair that it stopped. However, it had terrible water flow and it seemed to be sized better for sinks than for bath tubs. For every minute of showering, I needed an additional minute to drain the tube after I finished. The wire-mesh strainer had the best hair catching and would even catch lint and dead skin. It had excellent water flow and and it was easily the most affordable. My local store carries them for just $2 and amazon for not much more. I would be singing praises for this simple solution, but it has a problem. It is very difficult to properly clean. After you pulled out the hairs, you also have to scrape out the lint and dead skin that clogged up the mesh. If you just pulled out the air and don't scrape out the mesh, in just one or two days, the mesh is complete clogged up with lint, skin and soap, blocking the water flow almost as good as a rubber plug. If your are on a budget and don't mind the extra scraping work every two days (and maybe less often if you live alone), then the mesh strainer is an affordable, reliable solution. The TubShroom was the best looking of the four, especially the chrome TubShroom. It was easy to clean, had good water flow and reliably caught long hairs. It lets some short hairs slip by and certainly won't catch lint and skin, but it serves it's purpose of catching long hairs quite well. We also bought a TubShroom for our tenant. She also found it did a much better job of catching hair than the original metal screen that covered her tub's drain. So it would look nice, we also replaced the tub's plain brass drain (which was previously covered by the tub's original metal screen) with drain like ours where the circular flange is chrome plated.

Best product on the market

I don't usually write reviews but this thing is great. I've tried every other product on the market and this is by far miles ahead of everything else. Other ones I've used cause slow draining after maybe a week of use. This one took about 3-4 weeks before the draining started slowing down, and it catches ALOT of hair and gunk while letting the water flow. Very easy to clean too compared to others, just grabbed a tissue/paper towel and grab and wipe. Easy 1 minute installation, looks good and sturdy, no issues.

It works wonders!

Two years ago we tried the original version TubShroom and it was too flexible and hard to fit and remove from our tub drain and ended up not using it. However, this past spring we had an expensive plumber visit due to a stubborn hair clog way past the elbow drain. We tried some other hair catcher solutions which were better than the existing tub drain grate cover by itself but not great. We gave the TubShroom Ultra a try and it's a way better design. The stainless steel solid piece combined with the flexible fitting adapters works perfectly. Easy to insert, easy to remove and clean. And the amount of fine hairs that it catches that other drain hair strainers miss is amazing to see. Get the Ultra version!

Works, But Requires Routine Maintenance

This was recommended to me by a coworker, and it has done a great job catching hair and eliminating clogs. The only downsides are that it fills quickly and can take some time to completely clean out, but those aren't totally unexpected. I would say this fills within a couple of days, and once it does, water backs up quick. In the end, it is a reasonable tradeoff - a little routine maintenance for no more clogged drains.

Do NOT buy this product if you have self esteem issues

Yeah you read that title right. And yes I give this product a full mind melting 5 stars. But it seriously should have a warning label for anyone that has self esteem issues. This product will, hands down and without a doubt, convince you that you will be bald inside of a month. I am a single male living alone and occasionally have female friends from out of town that stay the weekend and use my shower. About once every 4 months my shower would get to the point it wouldn't drain, AT ALL. Standing water for days and couldn't get it to go down so I could Draino Gel it for the 15th time. I was POSITIVE that it was not my fault the shower drain kept getting clogged with hair. Boy was I f***** wrong....... I finally bought this little doodad thinking if it even helped it would be worth it. Install is so easy a 4 yr old could do it. Popped it in the drain right after another dose of Draino and thought well maybe I'll make it a year this time. *INSERT MANIACAL PYSCHOTIC LAUGH HERE* 2 Days later my shower had standing water while I was showering. I am furious with Draino because obviously I got a bad batch right? Nope..... Pulled this little gizmo out of the hole and it was COMPLETELY full of MY hair, and now my shower is draining before my eyes. "This is impossible", I thought. I cleaned it off thinking maybe there was still hair in the tub that I just wasn't seeing (it's the original from 1963 so it's scratched up so bad you'd definitely miss hairs). Fast forward 48 hours. My shower is standing water again. Pull the doodad, it's full..... Instantly my head begins spiraling trying to remember how many generations baldness skips. My grandpa was bald. My grandad was balding but not bald. My 60 yr old dad has a full head of hair. Oh no..... I am panicking thinking all this time my shower was telling me I'm losing my hair and I've just not noticed it in the mirror and now this thing is gonna be a little b**** and shove my baldness in my face every two days. What do I do!?!? My self esteem took a major hit that day. I was worried for months about my hair falling out. Was I sick? Am I being exposed to chemicals at work that can cause hair loss? What can I do to reverse this? Slow it? I couldn't shake it! Well, thankfully I'm here to tell you, months later, that I'm not bald (yet), I don't have a receding hairline (yet), and I have no evidence that such a thing is coming anytime soon. What I can tell you is this little thing-a-ma-jig will catch every damn hair your head lets go of and then magically create some more and make you clean it constantly. I now clean it everytime I go to take a shower, and I couldn't be happier that I can stop dumping expensive chemicals down my drain. It does exactly what it says it does, but I highly suggest anyone worried about balding or struggling with self esteem avoids this product or adequately prepared themselves for the fact that it's a damn good liar LOL

This really works! My daughter loses a ton of hair daily and now I dont have to worry about drain clog. It's amazing that this catches it all! Worth the purchase! Now if they would only make a large one for shower stall drains I would definitely buy one!

Save a $300 call to the plumber!

With teenage girls in the house I ended up with a mass of long hair clogging the drain in their bathroom, at which point I had to hug an auger to get it out as it was about 3-4’ down the drain. Afterwards installed this little thing and we’ve been clog free for the past six months. It catches a LOT of hair, if not all of it, and has saved me the pain of having to get the auger out again and deal with removing another clog. It sits down in the drain so stays put very well yet is easy to pull up and clean out. There are a few hairs that can get stuck around the rubber seal, but most of them come off very easily. Totally worth the price!
