    • Finally Found a Bed Rail That Doesn't Cause Scrapes or Bruises
My mom uses an adjustable hospital bed with a built-in rail on the upper portion of the bed. The problem is that she has a brain injury, and she sometimes works herself down toward the bottom of the bed while trying to get up, not realizing she can't safely do it. That's how she's ended up falling. We've tried several of the smaller bed rails, but they all created another problem - they got in the way when she actually needed to get out of bed in the morning. We started removing the upper section of these smaller rails, but the push button locking mechanism kept failing, and after a month or so it wouldn't lock back into place. Also, if Mom's leg wasn't lifted high enough or she sat too close to the rail, she'd scrape her leg or side on it. She bruises and develops sores very easily, so that was a complete deal breaker. We decided to give this rail a try, and so far it's been a much better option. One thing I really like is that the support structure sits below the mattress line, so there isn't a hard mechanism sticking up where her legs or hips can bump into it. The top rail is also smoother and more comfortable, which has made a noticeable difference. Assembly was quick and straightforward, and her caregiver that absolutely despises assembling things had it put together in just a few minutes without any frustration. The adjustable width made it easy to find a position that worked well for her bed and gave her a comfortable place to grab when repositioning or getting up. It's light enough that you can move it to a new bed easily and it still feels solid and secure. It's been about a month now, and everything is still working exactly as it should. It feels sturdy, gives her a reliable handhold, and doesn't get in the way the way our previous rails did. I also appreciate that it's reasonably priced - if it eventually wears out, replacing it won't be a huge expense. So far, we're very happy with it. ... show more

Using this for a top bunk that was transitioned to a lofted bed. There wasn't a bar in place in case someone rolled on the top bunk. The quality is great, and the steel is strong. Assembly was simple enough: you just needed to slip the bars into one another. It folds down nicely if you are needing that option. It's fairly stable. I purchased the Bed Rail as an added safety aid for getting in and out of bed, and overall it has some useful features. The ultra-wide extendable handle design provides a good amount of support, and the included storage bag is convenient for keeping small items nearby. I also appreciate that it is tool-free to install and easy to adjust. However, the overall sturdiness is disappointing when putting real weight on the handle. The support bar that slides underneath the mattress tends to lift upward and press into the mattress when weight is applied, which makes it feel less stable than expected. While it works well as a light assistance rail, it does not feel as secure or heavy-duty as the 350 lb rating suggests.
