  • The best thing for guitars since the invention of amplifiers!
I have been using BBE rack-mount Sonic Maximizers for years. I use them for recording and live sound. When I found out that they make a Sonic Maximizer pedal, I had to buy one. My main rig is a Peavey 5150II full stack. If you know this amp, you know how insane the gain is. I find that my sound gets compressed and lacks dynamics with the high gain this amp produces. I placed this pedal into the effects loop and now I love my amp even more. If you haven't tried their rack-mount SM's, you really should. Whether you record, do live sound or DJ, you will benefit from a SM. When properly adjusted, it will increase and tighten the bass, as well as make your highs clearer. It's a game-changer. BBE is also a great company. Several years ago, I loaned one of my rack-mount SM's to a friend. His cat knocked it off a table and damaged it. I sent it to BBE and, despite the warranty being expired, they repaired it for free. It doesn't get any better than that!!! ... show more

  • Whoa - that's where my tone has been hiding
I don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been mentioned by other reviewers so I'll keep it short. 1) This changes the sonic complexion of your tone in a dramatic and positive way. Whether it's acoustic or electric, it creates some wonderful separation in your tone. 2) This is not an EQ setting. But it does help provide greater clarity at the low end and more resonance and separation at the higher ends. It especially shines as you add more effects or are playing more complex chords. Hammer ons and pull offs come through clearer, runs sound cleaner, and overall tone shines brighter to help your licks stand out without being overpowering. There's even a noticeable difference when I put my acoustic into a P.A. All those tone in the signal seems to come back to life as though each string were directly mic'd. 3) The stomp is highly durable as best as I can tell. Solid construction and sturdy materials. If you care about tone and clarity (and you should)... go. buy. jam. smile. UPDATE: After more than a year, this is just one of two pedals that is always in my rig, week-in and week-out. It's held up well and I have no intentions of giving it up. ... show more

  • Just like the rack mount
Back in the 90's I used to have an Ampeg guitar head with an effects loop. I discovered the rack version of the BBE in a music store and was amazed by what it did for the money. The amp I have now is a totally bad ass Fryette Deliverance 120, but sadly it has no effects loop. So I thought I was out of luck as far as a BBE goes, because as far as I knew they were only available in rack mount units that could not be placed anywhere but in the effects loop. Then I was looking for pedals on Amazon and, lo and behold, there was a BBE Sonic Maximizer pedal! I snatched it up with a quickness and I am very pleased that it sounds just as good as the rack version. One caveat- if your signal is noisy the BBE can actually increase your signal noise. For this reason I highly recommend using top quality patch and instrument cables and doing all you can to clean up any noisy aspects of your sound before you use it. This pedal is very subtle, but to an audiophile like me it is absolutely essential. It also works great for ANY instrument or sound system. It's also great for vocals as well. But you may want the rack version for those applications. I would also buy the rack version if I had an effects loop to run it through. IMO, the pedal is really only for those folks who have no effects loop but still like what the BBE does. I'd go with the rack just for ease of use and keeping it in the proper place in the signal chain. Plus you can get a stereo rack version and have two BBE's for not much more money that you can use for another application. ... show more

  • Sonic Stomp gives you the extra sparkle you want
As noted in other reviews, this pedal really brings the sound to life. I've read some reviews that state this newer version isn't as good as the old, or some even say that the sound change is too extreme... I don't think that's the case with either. This sounds as good as any version I've used and the tone adaption can be dialed to a little or a lot. I set both knobs at 12 OK for my electric guitar and raise the bass to about 2 O'clock for my acoustic. ... show more
