  • Buy it. Here's why-
Size: 5A
This charger is under $30. I am waiting on my 5th one after running over the last one in my truck on my concrete driveway. I own a few, (5), a couple I will store until eventually another one fails in a couple of years of constant use. I own 2 riding mowers, both with new batteries, both hooked to the orginal "battery tender" junior green small unit. Those units are only .75 amps but seem to work ok for small AH batteries like Mowers and snowmobiles. I also have a few cars. Which is what I will discuss. I went through MANY plastic charger/maintainers both because I don't drive much but when I do it's a lot. Black and Decker, Duracell brand 6amp, echo, Nemco, I tried them all. Sized from 2-6 amps. All from China of course, and all failed relatively soon. Some of the chargers claim to "do it all" but some smart chargers wouldn't recognize any volts, some just flashed codes, some wouldn't turn off unless it was wiped out by a nuclear explosion. However, I found this charger model 6857D. 5 amps, looks like another cheap POS. Except this one works. For the job they are made for. It's not really a starter charger, but otherwise never had an issue. This model must be one of those fluke things where they added just enough computer to get the job done but not so much it fails. I use them daily as "maintainers" on my cars. One I put on an 89 corolla, left it and forgot about it. It's a 3 year old battery yet still will crank up after months. That's wherer this unit shines, maintaining like a Battery tender, however with 5amps will do a good job bringing an aging 12.3 volt back above 13 volts in just a couple of hours. It usually charges at over 14.5 volts, given the state of the battery, get it fully charged, then cut off. Then of course the battery will go to it's natural state of decay, a good battery should be at least 12.7 volts to start a car. If you drive to the store and home, say 5 miles, your alternator won't bring it back up 100%, but usually 98%. That's how batteries die after only a couple of years. I pull in, hook it up , it comes on about 2 minutes charging, it cuts off and I am back to a fully charged battery and desulfated plates. It won't cure a dead battery that sat for months and is down to 11 volts, no charger will do that. But it's a durable alternative as a Charger/Maintainer. ( Yes I know plenty of $100 chargers that will do it just as well, like my schumacher 100 amp/10amp but we are talking inexpensive here). Interesting I also own the 3 amp version, looks the same, but doesn't really have the "oooph" to be more than a maintainer. Or a charger. It takes too long, and the 3amp model is hit and miss. The 5 amp does it both and I have not one fail. Some chargers seem to get stuck in one mode while charging. This 5 amp never gets "stuck" and can recognize "FULL" better than any charger I have had. I know they must have tiny fans that will wear out, but 3 years of using these they haven't worn out. This unit like all China units have name, and body changes it seems every month. You want model 6857D. The only minor issue with his unit is when hooking to a bad battery or even an 80% charged battery and it taking a few minutes to decide whether 6v or 12v. It's a pretty rare event, usually on an old battery, and it fixes itself automatically. So they did make one nice upgrade, added a mode switch, so your charger doesnt have to decide whether 6v or 9v. You literally hit one button, make sure that put the charger in 12 volt mode, and walk away. Nice, the original ones could have used this instead of relying on a computer. There are no other choices to make like Spring, Fast charge, slow bunnies meaning slow charge. None of that garbage. You get 5amp which is almost perfect, slow enough to not boil or run hot, but way more output than tiny 1amp models the marketed is flooded with. This model will cut on and off when appropriate for the charge. This unit seems to be getting hard to find(that's why I keep a couple extra), I believe first built under the BYGD brand, now under the NDDI brand. Same model number, facing and operations, except now they've added an LED screen for a couple of dollars more. I don't need an LED screen, I will stick to the original 6857D model under whatever brand name. BTW, the one I crushed in the driveway had the end broke off, and the seam split, but it's not cheap plastic as I thought. think it's ABS. I can hear bits of plastic from the shell rolling inside. I held my breath, closed my eyes and hooked it back up. Works perfectly. Some gorilla tape around the end to hold it together, and it's like new, LOL.Buy it if wanting an inexpensive all around charger and maintainer. Who knows how long this NDDI company lasts or when the model number is discontinued. ... show more

  • Does an excellent job charging the battery and or keeping it charged
Size: 5A
This does a great job keeping the battery charged. Simple and easy to use, few items that need improvement (1) when disconnecting & reconnecting the charger, it automatically goes back to 6v as default, it is easy to forget to change it. I wish it had automatic detect or remember last setting (2) when disconnecting and or connecting using the mini clamps or ring terminals, the 8-10” lead section is very stiff and difficult to press together tightly for secure connection & the open lead on the exposed terminal is the positive end. I had to find a small rubber cap to place over the tip to prevent accidental short circuiting on the frame of my vehicles. I’ve purchased three of these, overall it does a great job and I’ve been happy with the results. I’ve only had them for a couple of months so far, hoping they will perform great this winter. ... show more

  • Bang for your buck
Size: 1.5A
Easy to install. Small, compact easy to hide, bang for your buck. Good tool. I installed it in my boat to maintain my trolling motor battery. I just plug it in when I'm done for the day and leave it to charge/maintain the battery overnight. I'm very happy with it.

  • UNRELIABLE
Size: 5A
Bought this item in November 2020. First one failed out of the box. The second worked for a couple years, but that said I only used it a few times. The problem is that when connected to a virtually dead battery, the sensor says "FULL" and thus won't charge the battery. Thus the device becomes useless. I was using it to recharge my gasoline generator's 12V lead-acid starter battery. Rather than replace this, I've decided to purchase an automotive grade jump-start unit. It has its own AC recharge capability, plus can be used to jump start the generator or my vehicles. ... show more

  • It works
Size: 5A
I hooked it up to my ATV with two low batteries. Pushed the mode button as the manual says and it started charging. You can hear a fan inside the unit when it is running. Left it charging over night. In the morning it had brought the two lawn and garden batteries up to full charge and turned the unit to float charge. Good unit, works well. ... show more
