Just as described and as portrayed in the photos, these are round wound strings. They are coated to extend the life of the strings. I have used a variety of coated strings for bass, electric guitar, and acoustic guitar. With the smaller gauges of guitar strings you can feel the difference that the coating provides, with smoother transitions and less string noise. That is not as evident with these strings, possibly because of the type of coating and the larger gauge of the strings. Will they last longer? Time will tell, and I can update my review. For all coated strings, the life of the coating itself is difficult to determine if you can't see it or feel it. I have another bass with a popular brand of black coated strings and the coating has remained on the strings all along the fretboard, but where I play with my right hand, with fingers, not a pick, the coating has begun coming off of the strings. Now that is a completely different type of coating for a different brand of strings. But it is an observation that part of the string may lose the coating earlier. With those strings, I have not noticed a change in sound quality and for my fretting hand, the coating remains and it is great. I can expect that with these strings as well, but I won't be able to see it because the coating is clear.

I immediately opened bag upon delivery. These are not flatwounds as described. They will work in a pinch as regular strings for the price.

These bass strings are a great value for the price. They are coated so they last longer than uncoated strings. The timbre and sustain isn't as good as expensive brand name strings, but they get the job done and are a good choice for a beginner who may not be able to appreciate the difference. The listing previously said these are flat wound strings, but it has since been corrected since these are regular round wound strings.
