If you're into the artisanal breads, this is a great kit to get you started. The materials are well made and of good quality. The banneton is sized right for most loafs you're going to make. The price is reasonable and you get all the tools you're going to need to get started. I love these bread-maker style whisks (this is my second), the two different bench scrapers are great... really, it's a pretty good kit. Would make a great housewarming gift to go with that freshly baked loaf for the new neighboors.

I have been collecting bread recipes all winter, but every time I'm about to bake, my husband comes home from shopping with so many loaves that it would be ridiculous to bake more. So I waited. Meanwhile, I gave in to the urge to get a Banneton Bread Proofing Basket set. I love the professional look the ridged baskets give to loaves produced by totally non-professional bakers like me. I was pleased by the price and decided the time was right. Of course, I couldn't wait to try it out. It was easy to adapt to the recipe I had chosen for the basket. I was nervous about the rise. How could that little thing hold all that dough? It looked pretty precarious by the time the transfer was made to the oven but it worked wonderfully. I wanted so much to peek as the loaf baked but I resisted. I gave that bread no excuse to be anything but perfect. And it was. The loaf was better than all the other bread I've made—so crunchy outside and tender inside! The crust was amazing, just as the Amazon ordering site says. The surface of the basket apparently attracts the moisture in the crust, making the crust crisp and crunchy to seal the moisture inside. This makes a spectacularly tasty loaf of bread. I was concerned about cleaning the baskets without water. I was surprised the discover that using the linen basket liner meant that almost no flour got through to the basket. Using a new, soft brush meant for another purpose, I had the basket clean and ready for the next time by the time the bread was ready to come out. The brush is now part of the set! My husband and I stood at the counter, staring at the loaf on the rack, waiting for it to be ready to slice. (Waiting for bread to cool needs its own saying akin to, "A watched pot never boils.") We cut, slathered on soft butter and savored. Slice after slice. The bread was beautiful and delicious too. If you bake at all, you need this set. I recommend it highly to produce bread that looks like bakery bread but tastes like an Old-World grandma's loaf made with love. This set helps you make real bread! Just think—you will be the beginning of a legacy. You will be the "Grandma" in Grandma's Old-Time Bread Recipe. Now that's a kick in the head! If I treat them right, will these baskets live past my lifetime and on to my great-granddaughter's? I think it just might. Someone told me before I had heard much about the product, "Banneton is best." I think that statement might just be true now that I'm familiar with the concept. Banneton will help you make great bread.

My hubs got into baking his own sourdough bread, so I got him this set. It may just be user preference, but he was not impressed with these proofing baskets. The dough stuck to the liner (maybe user error?), and the sizes of the loaves that these make is much more petit than he had hoped for. He had difficulty adjusting the recipe to fit into these baskets.
