Description

The Oakmont has some really neat features that make it great for smaller yards but keep the kids playing all day long. First, the raised fort has a colorful awning and front wall with white trimmed window to make a cool clubhouse-like area up top. Down below there is another fort, with front wall, window, and real door! And the side snack window has built-in bench just outside. Out on the swing beam there are two belt swings and an acrobat bar for plenty of swinging and clowning around. A standard step ladder gets the kids to the upper fort and our 8' speedy slide zips them back down again.

  • Leveling and prep work is key
Yes, it's not going to last 20 years, but I get the feeling most negative reviewers here are reviewing their own assembly and handy abilities (and lack thereof). It's correct that this can be assembled in one or two days, but that is not the total time you need. Leveling your build site is key (no yard is free of bumps or completely level). After leveling the ground, I used river rock and some gravel to lay the main foundation for the tower to stand on (not in any of the kid play zones, just where the wood meets the ground). The leveling of the tower must also be leveled with where the swing "A" piece goes - that is key to prevent creaks and other structural issues when a kid is swinging. Before assembly, I stained/water sealed all the wood by laying out all the pieces, two coats, to ensure water sealing and a good color. That takes a full day in itself and then maybe another day to ensure all pieces are fully dry. If you want this wood to hold up in the weather, it must be stained/sealed. I figured it would be easier than staining it after assembly. From beginning to end, this is more of a one week project if you want to do it right. AGAIN, the key to all this is a perfectly level site from the tower to where the swing set posts meet the ground. I used the bucket and level string method (google it). After leveling and placing the river rock foundation, I used different ground anchors that I found here on Amazon that go deeper and hold better than what was provided by Backyard discovery, since it's windy in my neck of the woods. I finished in early May 2020 (quarantine project) and it's now December 2020. My kids played on it all summer and fall (and still do), and the set doesn't rock back and forth or make noises at all - because of the proper leveling and rock foundation it sits on. The set has gone through several thunderstorms, rain, hail, severe winds, an adult who decided to swing on it multiple times without checking weight requirements, and possibly snow later this month. I'm confident I will get a minimum of 5 years out of it, and likely more if I keep the wood maintained with regular stain applications. If you think this is a furniture assembly project, this isn't for you. Best to hire someone. This is an outdoor wood project, and you will have to know your way around the dirt, site prepping, and improvising some new solutions, especially if you miscalculate the leveling. We had to drill our own holes a couple times too, no big deal. If you can handle all of that extra stuff outside of the instruction manual, go for it. It's a good deal. The only suggestion I have for Backyard Discovery is to offer some optional foundation/leveling kit for those who need it, along with better ground anchors. And yes I replaced one of the swings with a ladder for some variety. ... show more

  • Only some pieces are high quality—lots of uneven pre-drilling. Not junk, but not great either.
I purchased this play/swing set in February of this year. It’s been put together for some time now but I wanted to wait until my children got use out of it before reviewing—if I had reviewed it before, it would have only been a one star rating based on the material and terrible pre-drilling alone. I wanted to give the company a chance. After putting it together and having it for a while, it honestly didn’t improve the rating very much. Here are the pros and cons for brevity sake: Pros: -The company claims that all of the parts are kid-safe and no non toxic chemicals are used. I can tell you that upon unboxing I only smelled fragrant cedar. It appears to be untreated except for the stain. -The directions are pretty fantastic. I only struggled with one or two parts that weren’t labeled correctly. This was mostly due to the number/letter stamps not being very visible in several of the pieces. However, once I measured the boards and compared the size to the identification chart, it was simple enough to figure out. -The architecture of the play set seems well designed. Cons: -The support boards in several parts are too thin and flimsy. The floor of the playhouse is a joke, and there are not enough structural supports for around the windows. I make sure my kids don’t lean on the sides of the play set on top because enough pressure would cause those thin boards (held up only by bolts on the bottom and one 1 1/2 teenie piece of wood screwed across the slats) to buckle, sending your child tumbling head-first to the ground. -MANY of the pieces had cracks in them, or knots, or were bent or generally just unusable. I contacted Amazon about some of the frame pieces being cracked and rather than sending new parts, they refunded some of the order. I used this money to purchase wood from a store and have it cut to size. -SO MANY pieces have the absolute worst pre-drilling. Oh my goodness, the time I spent trying to fix their manufacturing mistakes—quality control in this company stinks. I expected much better out of this product, particularly since it’s a child’s play center. If I hadn’t replaced boards with new wood, I wouldn’t feel comfortable letting my kids play on this. The bench is leaning and uneven, for instance, because the drill holes are at least 1/2 inch off from the other. -Some of the bolts, screws, and other parts were damaged during manufacturing. Most of these things included extras in the bags, but there were 2 very important structural bolts that did not. Again, another trip to the store for new pieces. -The thinner wood pieces are prone to splintering when drilling in the included T bolts. The wood is simply not sturdy enough to withstand that sort of pressure or friction. -There are far too many places a kid can snag an elbow, and the curved top supports of the play house are far too low, even for my 5 year old. They keep hitting their head coming up the stairs. Some parts of it are just not designed well for the size child it says it can accommodate. -I feel uncomfortable with the weight limit it says it can hold. I HIGHLY doubt the top structure or even the swings can hold that much weight. All that said, I wish I had saved a little more and gotten a different playset. I won’t be buying from this company again, that’s for sure. I felt this was a good mid-grade option for my smaller-sized yard, but I’m extremely disappointed in this purchase. Oh well! I went through all the trouble of building it and replacing so many of the wood pieces I might as well make it work. Shrug! ... show more

  • 3 years ownership review
We purchased this during the infamous involuntary house arrest of year 2020. The instruction was straight forward, hardware was on points. All of the pilot holes were mostly properly placed and sized. My kids used the hell out of this playset, and it is approaching the 3rd year of ownership, so far so good. My only suggestion is to reinforce the cantilever portion of the beam to the main structure. ... show more
