  • Feels Old-School, Works Better Than Expected
I was honestly curious how I’d feel about using a GPS navigation system that does not connect to my phone to use the internet, and after spending some time with it, I’m pleasantly surprised. First, the basics. You do need to plug it in and charge it the battery as it only lasts around 30 minutes, which isn’t amazing, but if you’re using this in a car (which most people will be), it comes with a nice long cord so you can keep it plugged into the cigarette lighter and not worry about it dying while you're out and about. When you power it on, the menu is pretty straightforward once you spend a few minutes learning what the buttons do. I recommend going straight into Settings and running the setup wizard. It walks you through the important stuff like changing miles vs kilometers, and a few other preferences that make the experience smoother. The navigation menu took me a couple minutes to get comfortable with, but after that it felt easy enough. We tested several addresses around town and it recognized everything we entered. I also zoomed in on some more remote areas near national parks in the Nevada and Utah area, just to see how detailed the maps were, and I was impressed. It shows a lot of back roads and rural areas. Maybe not every single dirt road, but definitely more than I expected for an offline device! We are hoping to visit some national parks again and sometimes our cell signal is not great - this will ensure we don't get lost like last time! Adding a destination and then inserting additional stops along the route was simple. You can also search for types of places along the way, which is nice if you need food, gas, or a quick stop without overthinking it. Mounting was easy. The arm clicks into the back of the unit without a struggle, and the suction cup feels strong and secure. I also liked that it includes a smooth plastic disc with sticky backing in case your dashboard has a textured surface where suction cups don’t like to stick. That said, I’d be mindful that using the disc could leave marks depending on your dash, so that’s something to consider. One thing that made me laugh at first (in a good way) is how many extra features this thing has. There’s an entire menu of conversion charts for money, temperature, units, and more. There are even clothing and shoe size charts. At first it felt a little cheesy… and then I realized if you’re traveling internationally, that could actually be really handy. There’s also a regional information section where you can select the area you’re traveling to and see examples of local traffic signs and important driving rules. For example, we saw notes about headlights needing to be on at all times in certain regions, and requirements to wear an emergency vest if you pull over for a flat tire. Little details like that could be really useful if you’re in an area you're not familiar with. Overall, this GPS has a lot going on in a good way. It feels practical, a bit old-school, and surprisingly thoughtful. If you like the idea of having a dedicated navigation device that works without relying on cell service or data, this is a solid option with more features than I expected. ... show more
