I recently picked up the AVAPOW 8000A portable jump starter as a backup for my 1991 Miata. I wanted something compact that I could keep in the car at all times so a weak battery wouldn’t stop me from taking it out. Even with limited time using it so far, it’s already given me a lot more confidence. I’ve had a couple of starts where the battery was clearly on its last legs, and the battery starter had no problem getting the car going right away. The battery felt close to dead, but the jump starter delivered enough power to bring the engine to life without drama. For its size, it feels genuinely capable, which is reassuring when you’re relying on it as an emergency tool. The overall build quality is better than I expected. The clamps feel solid and secure, and nothing about the unit feels cheap or flimsy. Setup is straightforward and intuitive, which matters when you’re dealing with a stressful situation or standing outside in the cold. It’s the kind of device you can figure out quickly without second-guessing yourself. One feature I didn’t expect to appreciate as much as I do is the built-in flashlight. It’s surprisingly bright and has multiple modes. I obviously hope I never need to use it in a real emergency, but it’s easy to imagine situations where it would be incredibly handy, like dealing with a dead battery at night or on a dark roadside. I’ve also been comfortable leaving it in the car full-time, which is important for something meant to be used when you least expect it. The media could not be loaded. The overall build quality of the unit is great. The handle is well-designed and comfortable to hold. It has plenty of space, making the unit easy to carry and maneuver, even with gloves on. The casing is made from a durable material. You can tell it’s built to withstand being tossed in a trunk or handled in the elements without any worry of damage. With that said, it does come with a nice padded storage case. The case has room for the jump starter, battery clips, 12V adapter, charging cable, and instructions. The display is clear and easy to read, even in direct sunlight. It's simple and clear on what it's displaying, like how full the unit is, if it's ready, or if you have the clips hooked up incorrectly. The clips feel incredibly sturdy and well-made. They open wide and have a powerful grip, so you know they’re making a secure connection to the battery terminals. You can hear this in the short video clip I included. The safety features of this unit are nice. The built-in protections against reverse polarity and short-circuiting are fantastic. It takes all the guesswork out of the process, making it reliable for anyone, regardless of their mechanical experience. You can see in the video that when I hooked up the clips incorrectly, it immediately showed a "2" error code. This code is listed in the instructions and on the backside of the unit. The instructions are clear and simple, and the device itself is intuitive. You just connect the clips and press a button—it’s that simple. There's no complicated setup, which is exactly what you need in an emergency. This unit has a lot of jump-starting power! I recently needed to use it to start an old outboard motor. The jump starter packs that normally start cars would not turn the motor over. I hooked this unit up, and it started right up! As funds allow, I plan to upgrade all the vehicles in my fleet with this unit for peace of mind. Overall, this jump starter is a powerful, reliable, and user-friendly tool that every car/boat/powersports owner should have.
