  • Would have loved a timer option included
Size: CKSP-Standard Kit, No Battery
The unit itself is very sturdy, and I appreciate that I was able to use the existing door on my pre-fab coop. There are a few things that would have made this opener perfect. First, my box had no instructions included. I've noticed this mentioned on other reviews/questions for the product. After dropping a significant amount of money on this product, I wasn't pleased to be downloading and printing 40-pg manual/instructions. Second, the wiring that connects the arm to the control box is only 3-ft. Another couple of feet would have allowed me to place the control box on a sturdier section of the coop. Finally, the photocell sensor did not perform as expected at all. My chickens wake up at dawn and start making a ton of noise wanting to be let out of the coop. I wanted an automatic opener so I wouldn't be heading outside at dawn every morning to let out the chickens and keep the peace with the neighbors. Unfortunately, by the time the photocell sensor recognized that it was daylight, the chickens had been been serenading the 'hood with cackles for over 30 minutes (and I did make sure I didn't have a delay set). Coop Controls sent me a link to a timer that can be purchased separately, and they did provide a helpful wiring diagram. My only experience with wiring is with fixtures that include all of the necessary components, so I was on my own to figure out what I would need to buy and how to connect the timer to both the battery and the control panel. I would have preferred the option to purchase the unit with a timer (instead of a dawn to dusk sensor) with all of the necessary supplies and instructions that are as detailed as those in the manual. I spent way more time installing everything than I would like to admit, but I am finally happy with the installed unit and separate timer! ... show more

  • Highly Recommended. Great product and excellent customer support!
Size: CKSPXP-Solar Kit, No Battery
We purchased the kit with solar panel in the summer. Installation was a snap and the kit included everything needed. The solar panel is well built and has a stout bracket and the actuator and housing are beefy and appear very well made. Everything in the kit is very high quality. Our coop is a converted stables and the half door is quite large; the actuator handles it with ease and the static holding force is very high; more than adequate to keep the coyotes from getting any funny ideas. It only took 2 days for the the girls to comprehend when the door would close and we've never lost a single chicken to the night life. After several months of perfect operation the days are getting shorter and we made some changes to our coop and modified our installation to include a timer. We ended up with a hiccup (user error!), the folks at Coop Controls/Ghost Controls promptly returned our call and helped get us out of trouble. Its tough to find a well made product and a company willing to support it these days. Thanks for a great product and ownership experience; highly recommended. ... show more

I am fairly new to owning chickens and found this product after doing some research about how to make it easier for me to keep my chickens safe and happy. I researched several different options and found that this kit met my needs the best since I made my own custom chicken coop from scrap materials I had left over from previous projects. I watched the video online and found that it was a breeze to install in less than an hour and has worked perfectly every time since installation. Most of the time I collect the eggs late in the afternoon, make sure their water and food is full, count my hens, and then push the button to close the door knowing that it won’t open again until sunrise the next day. Luckily for me, a couple of times I was out late and when I got home after dark, the door was shut and all of my girls were all inside of the coop. ... show more

  • Sad I had to return
Size: CKSP-Standard Kit, No Battery
I absolutely loved all the features of this door! It had just about everything on my wishlist but sadly when my coop arrived it only came with a 12” wide door and I had to return this potentially great product. So to be fair I never really got a chance to set up and use but if the product was more versatile I’m sure I would have given it a much higher ranking. If in the future they came up with a slightly different design I may reconsider. Measure your door because they aren’t joking when they say it has to be at LEAST 16” wide but I’d say more to be comfortable. What kind of chicken needs a 16” door? Hmm?? ... show more

  • Easy, effective, flexible solution. Spot on!
Size: CKSPXP-Solar Kit, No Battery
My chicken coop and run are lovingly designed and built from PVC, hardware cloth, an Ikea chest of drawers, and various other bits and bobs. The girls are protected at night by a swing door on the run (made of PVC). Most automatic door openers rely on having a sliding door, which would have required me to substantially rebuild the run (or the coop). Instead, I found this, which was easy to install and worked as designed, even without a wooden frame for the door! I added a "Baomain CN101A DC 12V 16A Amps Digital LCD Power Programmable Timer" (also available from Amazon) to open the door on a schedule rather than on sunrise, and the kind and knowledgeable folks at Ghost Controls (who make the door opener) were exceptionally helpful with information about how to install and troubleshoot the timer. My chickens and I are very grateful to them and their fine product. ... show more
