  • Perfect scanner for DiY or small shops
Style: MK808Z
The Autel MaxiCOM MK808Z is a perfect upgraded scanner for DiY and small shops. Compared to my MaxiPro MP900, it’s slightly smaller and easier to handle. Both have capacitive LCD touchscreens, with the MK808Z’s 7-inch (1024x600) versus 8-inch (1280x800). They have similar cases, although I have to say I do prefer the MK808Z’s with hook & loop closure for the cord rather than the hard doors. The MK808Z can handle a slightly wider temperature range, both colder & hotter. Also, the renewal for year 2 is about 40% of the MP900. This is a corded unit, and be aware that Autel disables Bluetooth syncing on coded models. You can't upgrade later by purchasing an Autel Bluetooth connector. Just a heads up. The corded models are usually about $200 less than BT versions. While you do not get ECU coding, a dozen or so services, or VAG specific walkthroughs that the MaxiPro series has, I believe you get all the Resets. By the way, a little thing, but the power light is on the right, which is nice for us users that keep the shipping film on their units to protect the screen; if you are one of us, the power light is not covered by the 'Remove This Film' label (they make screen protectors for Autel scanners, just FYI). In usage, the MK808Z feels great. The Autel UI feels immediately comfortable. The workflow is slightly simplified versus the MP900, and I was able to get through basic diagnostics without having to enter extra information upfront. On the report side, many of the common Autel fields remain, for service tracking. What is not there is the before/after scan linking, which I don’t think most users would miss. In fact, I usually pick stand-alone diagnostics to avoid the extra entry on my MP900. Live sensor status reading is included, as is recording and playback. Report sharing & cloud reporting is also included, as is WiFi printing. I suggest you enable the Autel Cloud automatic upload functions. I could not see how to force a PDF report to upload otherwise, although I did find it on Data Review. By the way, you can access reports, data, and manage devices via cloud-us.autel dot com. The Cloud link on the main site appears to only be promotional. Minor issues only here. I wish they would have used USB-C rather than USB Mini-B. Cloud reporting continues to be a little clunky, so enable auto upload as I mentioned. Email, QR sharing, and printing are definitely what you'll use more of. I can easily recommend this Autel scanner for DiY and small shops. The initial price point is competitive with other OBD scanner vendors, that aren't anywhere near Autel in quality & support. Also, the renewal is quite reasonable and worth the price for how active Autel is with updates. The toughest part in selecting a scanner is what model/level to get, and I think this is a great fit for DiY’ers/small shop looking for resets and support for FCA/Stellantis vehicles. You won’t get ECU encoding; used when replacing complete ECU or sub-control modules, replacing parts with encoded performance numbers that need updated, or unlocking hidden functions. That might be something you'll want if you’re a small, independent shop, but you don’t need that functionality on every scanner you own. Most DiY users will easily get by without it. Also, I find myself reaching for this scanner over the bulkier MP900 every time now. Autel is a top-tier diagnostic tool vendor and the MK808Z is an excellent scanner. ... show more

  • An excellent mid to entry-level scan tool that is functional, easy-to-use, and a good value.
Style: MK808Z
An excellent mid to entry-level scan tool that is functional, easy-to-use, and a good value. As a technician with over 30 years of experience working on vehicles and marine equipment, I’ve used everything from basic code readers to full OEM diagnostic systems. I currently own several scan tools, including the Autel MaxiCheck MX900, Mucar 892BT PRO, and a Techmate Pro for marine use, so I had a pretty good baseline going into this review. After using the Autel MK808Z for the past week, I can confidently say this is a very capable and well-rounded diagnostic tool that delivers good performance for its price point. The overall fit and finish is excellent. The unit feels good in hand with a durable outer shell that should hold up well in a shop environment. The included case keeps everything protected and organized, and setup was quick and straightforward. The interface is clean, responsive, and easy-to-use right out of the box. In real-world use, I primarily rely on live data, graphing, freeze-frame data, and service/maintenance resets. All of these functions worked exactly as expected. Live data is smooth and responsive, and the graphing feature is especially useful for diagnosing intermittent issues. The scan speed is good; just slightly slower than my MX900, but very comparable to my Mucar. Where this scanner really shines is in its balance. It offers a high level of functionality without being overly complicated. The workflow is simple, making it a great option for someone who wants professional-level capability without the steep learning curve of higher-end systems. Pros: - Functional all-system diagnostics with strong live data and graphing - Easy-to-use interface with smooth navigation - Responsive and easy-to-read touch screen - Durable build quality suitable for shop or garage use - Quality performance at a competitive price point - Great value for DIYers, enthusiasts, and small shops - Has a great battery life for extended use Cons: - Slightly slower than higher-end units like the MX900 - Corded connection (no Bluetooth) may be limiting for some users - Uses an older USB Mini-B cable for charging Overall: I'm very happy with this Autel MaxiCOM MK808Z scan tool. While I still reach for my MX900 mostly out of familiarity, the MK808Z has proven itself to be a reliable and capable unit that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. If you’re a DIYer, an auto enthusiast, or running a small shop and want a good-quality scanner that is functional, easy-to-use, and delivers excellent value, this is a great choice. Highly recommended. ... show more
