i can't believe how simplistic this device is compared to the high end scanners and it just works. i mean what else could you ask for. its so simple. plug in, turn key, it auto detects the car's programming and if there is an active code will automatically scan. is very fast and effective. i used on 2 cars, my friends Pontiac grand am and my Pontiac g6. my g6 had no codes on it just wanted to see the difference. if there are no codes active it will not auto scan. however you can still manually make it scan, and it also can see certain things from your emissions systems. not everything but some things, but it really just tells you if they are working or not. if the programming is compatible, it can also pull the VIN off the car and as i found out, i can't on every car. my g6 it could see the VIN, while my friends grand am, it could not. still for the small affordable price of 20$ has already saved me 110$ in diagnostics fees. im sure will save me much more in the future. The other nice thing being, even if this thing broke after 1 use..... it cost 20$ and electrical diagnostic fees at a shop where i live are 110$..... even ONE use would pay for this product. and yes it doesn't give you a description of the code but who cares.... most the software in high end scanners has to be constantly updated to be accurate. it reads code, you type code in Google and presto..... you saved yourself a ton of cash. i like cash. if you like cash you can order too! edit (11-4-15) - I have owned this for over three years now and has been extremely valuable. I have had several different cars since the time I originally bought this and used at least a half dozen times on family/friends cars to pull codes. This thing is great, even though these can be borrowed for free at auto parts stores to pull codes, it is more convenient to do it yourself in your own home on your schedule. This thing even stunned me when it could read a 2004 Audi A4 as VW and Audi normally are on a completely different communication/diagnostic system than most other cars in the world. Also I am pretty rough with this thing because it was so cheap and I wouldn't care if I had to replace and it has continued to work. It may be cheap but has been extremely valuable to me in pulling engine codes. I wish there was a rating above 5 star!

It's not often that I will write a review on a product that I have purchased as long as 11 years ago. But by now I have used this product many times on several different vehicles (1998 Honda CR-V, 2002 Honda Accord, 2015 Honda CR-V, 2015 Mazda 3, 2016 Hyundai Sonata, 2018 Honda CR-V, and more) and have some thoughts to share based on my usage of this scan tool over 11 years. First of all, this thing, even though plastic, is plenty durable. I have had this device stashed in the back of various vehicles for years, getting knocked around, heated in the sun, frozen in the cold, jiggled millions of times over millions of Chicago potholes, etc. And what I can report is, it still works just as it did on day one. Quite durable. Secondly, know that this is a very very basic ODB2 scan tool. Nothing fancy here. For example, it will display trouble codes such as P0301, but it won't actually tell you what P0301 means. But you could then pull out your smartphone, open a browser, and search "P0301 trouble code" and see all the details about what that code relates to and what might be triggering that trouble code. So, it's a little more work than having the description displayed right on the device. But, that's the tradeoff for the very inexpensive price. But then again, if you spent a bit more to buy a code reader that did display the English description for the trouble code, it most probably still won't tell you what might be triggering it, and you'd still have to research on the internet to get that information anyway. Consider: How often do you expect to use this device? If only every several months or so on average, then it's really not a big deal to have to look up the trouble code on the internet in order to obtain the code description and possible causes. And for the low price, that's an acceptable tradeoff for me. Thirdly, the menus take a little practice to figure out how to navigate them and find things, but you'll catch on in a minute or two of playing around with it. Just pay attention to what the screen is displaying before you hit the next button, and you should do fine. Don't just start hitting random buttons because you feel like you don't know what you're doing. That'll just leave you lost. Aside from that, I have found this to be a very durable and reliable tool, and have gotten my money's worth out of it many times over already. For that reason, even if it's not anywhere near the fanciest and most capable of scan tools, it earns 5 stars from me. IF you need only a basic tool and at the lowest price point, this one is a good choice, and I can recommend it after 11 years (and counting) as a satisfied user.

I purchased this product 5-1/2 years ago and I have to admit... I was a little disappointed at the time. The main concern was that no CD with instructions and error codes came with the OBDII reader as had been claimed on the product page at the time (actually, I just noticed the product page still mentions a CD). I didn't end up having occasion to use this product as intended because we ended up trading in the vehicle that was having mechanical issues. So, I let the product sit on my garage shelf unused. Recently, our 2004 Ford F150 XLT 5.4L 4X4 pickup truck began sounding like a diesel rather than a gasoline engine, with a knocking sound. It was also idling rough, especially once warmed up. I'm a handy guy, but I'm no auto mechanic. Diagnostics is often the most difficult part of auto repair, so I dusted off this OBDII reader and searched online for its instructions. Fortunately, the Amazon product page now has the instructions posted in PDF form. This reader is easy to use and, although somewhat simplistic, it did help me read the error codes on our truck: P0022 ("Camshaft Position Actuator A - Bank 2 Timing Over-Retarded") and P0345 ("Camshaft Position Sensor A - Bank 2 Circuit Malfunction"). I frankly would not have been able to diagnose the issue with our truck without this information. I saved hundreds of dollars on diagnostics alone, and perhaps thousands on repairs thanks to this product. Thus, I am quite satisfied overall. This product isn't perfect, but it satisfactorily for reading error codes. I found this OBDII reader did clear the error codes (& Check Engine light) even though the device returned an "ERASE FAIL!" message, which according to the instructions would mean the codes did not clear (re-scanning showed they did indeed clear). In fact, the instructions are somewhat obscure, but they do provide the necessary orientation for first time users. Humorously, the manual also refers to an "enclosed CD" for manufacturer specific error codes. This product does not come with a CD, so manufacturer specific codes will need to be found on the internet. Despite some drawbacks, this product rates four stars overall because it gets the job done.

My 2004 Nissan Sentra failed smog because of an error code related to the thermostat and "service engine light" was on. The technician wanted $85 to diagnose it and who knows how much to fix it. I imagine the entire job would set me back around $150 at least. I googled the error code on the smog test print out and found out it was most most likely a thermostat issue. I also learned that I'd need an OBDII scanner to read and erase the error code. I bought a thermostat at the auto part shop for $14 and this scanner for $18 shipped (amazon prime). I googled instructions on how to replace the thermostat. Unscrewed the housing, popped in the new one, screwed it back on, drove the car around for 20 minutes (service engine light was still on) and then parked and turned it off. Then I followed the instructions, which was to attach the scanner to the OBDII connector under the steering wheel. It fired right up, then I turned the ignition on (but didn't start it) it read everything and said there were no errors. Then I used it to erase the existing error code. BAM, service engine light went off and stayed off. Because I erased the computer data to wipe out the service engine light, I had to drive the car around a bit and wait for the self-diagnostic tests to run and build up data. This took about 45 minutes of driving time over the course of 2 days. The scanner was able to tell me when the tests were ready so it could be taken to the mechanic to re-do the smog test. Car passes smog, and I saved at least $100 and peace of mind knowing that I didn't get ripped off by a shady mechanic. I don't know what else the average do-it-yourselfer would need from an OBDII scanner, but this is all I will probably ever need. It worked perfectly and exactly how the instructions said. I'm not sure if they changed the instructions or if other reviewers were reading their manuals wrong, but the instructions I got said to do exactly what they all said, however they stated that the instructions were differet. Shrug. It's pretty easy. Just stick it in the car, wait for it to be ready and then turn the ignition on without starting it. Overall, it's a fantastic device. Everyone who drives a new car should have one. Between this and google you can probably solve a lot of small but costly problems with your car. I think the mechanic was pretty pissed that I went and bought this and did it myself for less than $40 total

As with anyone who has had the check engine light pop on while driving, my heart jumped to my throat when that baby lit up my dash on the way to work. And then it splashed back down to the pit of my stomach...hard! I guess it is the not knowing of what is hurting my little commuter. I wanted to know. This brought on the search for a dependable, but not expensive, scan tool to find out on my own what the heck was going on. I found this little jem and decided to give it a shot based on the mostly positive reviews it had. NO REGRETS! This product worked without any glitches. My vehicle is a 2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS and I think the hardest part of the process is finding the link connector in the car (it is down below of the steering wheel under the driver side dash, if anyone is interested, you have to feel for it because it is not visible). Once I found it though, it was all down hill...in a good way. It fit perfectly and worked as stated in the manual. Just follow the steps indicated and you will get the info you need. In my case, all I was looking for was the reason for the check engine light to turn on. I got my answer with this little scan tool. In less than five minutes I got the DTC code (this is explained in the manual) that set of the MIL. Once I got the code, I went straight to the auto shop and told my mechanic what I found. I have a good honest "guy" that was surprised, but also pleased, that I had pin pointed the problem for him. But, the tool also gives more info on the car than just the problem codes. It can pretty much give you the status of most of important components in the car. It was a relief to find out my car was in great shape, except for just one code. Very much a relief. Well, from my positive rating, you can figure out that I definitely recommend this producted. It is a simple, but valuable tool to have if you drive every day and depend on your car. I have used it only once, and will be happy if I don't have to use it again. I mean this in a good way, but if I ever get a check engine light, it won't freak me out because I have my own diagnostic tool to see what is going on with my beloved 4-banger! Note: The manual comes with a list of generic code definitions. Once you find the code, you can use their listing, or look it up on the internet. I did both just to verify.

I bought this to use on my 2008 Honda Fit. The unit is very basic with few options and is easy to understand. My car engine light has lit up about a half dozen times in the time that I have owned this tool. Each time I have tried to diagnose the problem using the scan tool and following the instructions exactly. Every single time I have had the same result; the scan tool does a check and finds no problems. This leads me to manually check the gas cap and other easy to spot problems trying to fix the issue myself. So far I have been lucky and the problem has either been vapor lock i the gas tank or a dirty air filter, so the light goes off by itself. I am giving this three stars because at this point I honestly don't know if this tool in working correctly or not. It might be the case that my car's error codes are not recognized, though the tool gives no indication of that sort. The tool lights up and I am able to browse through all the menu options, but it has never given me any meaningful feedback when connected to my car. If I ever have a problem with the engine light that I can't figure out myself I will bring the car to an Auto Zone shop and ask them to scan it for free (the dealer charges over $100 for this service). I keep the scan tool around on the off chance that it might actually detect a problem someday, but up till now it has done nothing for me. I don't mind as it wasn't very expensive and much cheaper than taking it to the dealer. I have never tried it on another car, but if I ever do I will update this review with my results.

A Must-Have Tool That Pays for Itself After One Use The Autel MS300 OBD2 Scanner has been one of the smartest twenty-dollar tools I’ve ever bought for my garage. It’s small, rugged, and ridiculously easy to use—just plug it into your car’s OBD2 port, turn the ignition to ON, and it immediately pulls diagnostic codes. Within seconds, you can see exactly why your check engine light is on, look up the code online, and decide whether it’s a DIY fix or something worth taking to a mechanic. What I like most is its simplicity. There are only two buttons: one for “Enter” and one to scroll through options. It reads and clears codes, checks emission readiness (for smog tests), and even displays VINs on newer cars. It works on nearly all vehicles made after 1996, including domestic, European, and Asian models. I’ve used it on several cars—from a Mitsubishi Raider to a Toyota Highlander—and it’s never failed to connect. The screen is basic but readable, even in a dim garage. The cable is sturdy, and the unit powers directly from the car, so there are no batteries to worry about. It won’t show live data or deep system diagnostics like an expensive scanner, but for everyday use—checking, confirming, and clearing codes—it’s perfect.
