All of us have been driving down the road and had our check engine light comes on. First thing we do is start panicking about what is wrong and what is it going to cost. Then comes the who do I take my vehicle too and we keep driving hoping the light we go off. With the OBD2 scanner automotive engine tool we can breathe a sigh of relief. This handy little tool will tell us what is going on before we make a trip to the mechanic. Sometimes its a simple fix a DIY handy person can handle with themselves saving a lot of money and time.The Autel AL319 is a small compact tool that you might even want to keep in your vehicle for a quick diagnosis. At 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ x 29″ (total length) and weighing less than a pound anyone can use this tool. Also, with the brightly lit colored coded LED screen it is easy to read. The LED scree is about 2 inches, but still large enough for those with bifocals to see with out issues. Also, there is a built in speaker that gives both visual and audible tones. Another thing that most users will like is that this scanning tool works on all 1996 and newer vehicles. This includes domestic and imports. The OBD2 scanner automotive engine tool also provides users with a one click I/M readiness key which gives a quick readable scan. Also, this scanner is set up for multilingual providing both menu and DTC definitions the language you need. This feature is unique to most scanners.The cable length is adequate and makes using the tool comfortable. Also, the manual has a good break down of the DTC codes. As well as a troubleshooting section for scanner issues. Easy to read on to use, perform OBDII diagnostic tests and actual codes for you vehicle. Also, how to read the codes, clear codes and some emissions information. Overall, I found this OBD2 scanner automotive engine tool to be simple to use. It literally takes minutes to set up. When you have determined a emission fault code this scanner records the findings in a freeze frame with the data. Which is very useful to identifying any issues your vehicle is experiencing. Also, having the color coding allows for a quick determination of issues. Green light means no issues, yellow means possible problems and red means means you have one of more issues in your vehicles system.I do like the one click operation of this compact scanner. Also, this tool is a plug and go type scanner so it can be used anytime. I also was impressed to see that this scanner offers updates by downloading. The seller recommends selecting the bin file to update the operating system. Then after updating the bin file to choose the AUT file which will update the DTC library. However, you need to update both the bin file and DTC file or the scanner will not work properly.One thing that surprised me the most was how detailed the user manual is. Most products today do not include a well written manual and if they do its a downloadable one. I like a book in my hand and this one did not disappoint me at all.     • Nice scanner but difficult to update
Scanner works well. Easy to use but can only be updated using a PC. No update app for Mac available. And the PC update app is not easy to use.

    • So glad we got this - easy to use and works
We had problems almost every year getting our sprinter van inspected (have never gotten a good explanation why). Going back to find that it STILL wouldn't pass inspection was so annoying, and all they'd ever say is "you need to drive it more". Now we can test and see that it will pass, if not keep driving it. Cheap and works great. Shops near me charge $25-$60 just to clear the codes. They will read them for free but that is not the solution. Easy to use. Buy one for others for Christmas/Birthdays.

2023 Update: Review still stands! I now have a 2023 BMW M340xi and is able to read that as well! Original Review (2017): Hello all, I was getting annoyed by the fact that I had to constantly go to AutoZone or PepBoys in order to find out why the Check Engine Light (CEL) was on. Sometimes they would even charge me to do so So I went ahead and did my research on which one I should buy. I was looking for a scanner that would be able to read ALL vehicles that has OBD II, ability to tell me that code and what the code means, and the ability to clear it. This scanner did all of that and I'm very happy with my purchase. Here are some things that I did soon as I got the device in the mail. I downloaded the program form their website (Maxi-Link v1.04) in order to update it to it's latest firmware, plugged it in with the provided USB cable, followed the steps and it was up to date! And to my surprise they even had a DTC Lookup manual in their program in case you forgot what the code description was or if someone knew the code but didn't know what it means, this was extremely handy to have. It had P0, P2, P3, U0 and U3 within the DTC lookup, codes with P1, P3, and U1 you would have to do research as they are manufacturer specific. Another neat feature is that this scanner allows you to view freeze frame data and the I/M Monitor is very useful also. The LED screen is very nice to have as some scanner don't even have a lit screen, even more expensive ones doesn't sometime. But I only wish the buttons like ENTER/Exit and Scroll were lit also but it's not something that I would knock off a star for. As I said before, I did a lot of research so here are some reasons why I chose this product over the others. BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool for Android Devices - I had friends and family that had bluetooth scanners and they all had some type of bad experience with them. This didn't make me not want to buy one however, I didn't buy it because of the fact that I had to use an app off the phone or tablet and I personally hate scanners like that. Oxgord CAN OBD II Scanner Tool for Check Engine Light & Diagnostics, Direct Scan and Read Out - It was very small and compact, but it only told you the code with no description, you would have to remeber the code or write it down and do your own research. Also, it only has a small screen and I felt as if that it would be hard to navigate through the screen if I need to. Lastly, PepBoys in my neighborhood, used this in order to tell you what code pops up, and it was unable to read both my Audi and BMW. I read others say it was working on theirs but I saw it with my own eyes that it wasn't working and I knew I didn't want this product. Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for OBDII Vehicles - Same company as the product I'm reviewing but the fact that the screen was small, I was willing to pay the extra $15 to have a nice lit bigger screen with more features as well.     • Unable to scroll for entire dtc definition

The scroll button works for every menu however it does not work when displaying a dtc with a long definition. The screen shows a scroll bar and the dedinition is cut off so it's definitely supposed to. I even installed the latest update from Autel and no change. Works fine other than this annoying flaw. ... show more
