  • Another good Aurora product from what I've seen.
Model: AU1000MA
I still own an older Aurora shredder (AS1200X) that is a "crosscut" type and about 8-yrs old. It is still working today and I use it for shredding material that doesn't require as much security (or fine cut). My experience with that old Aurora is what brought me to try them out with this new shredder. This new shredder does a much better (finer) job of shredding and is about 1/2 as quiet vs my old Aurora shredder. It is not whisper quiet, but not so noisy that it would bother me. My old Aurora shredder has this small window at the very top of the collection drawer that was 3" tall and a couple inches wide. This new shredder has a very large window of 5 3/4" tall and about 4" wide that extends over half of the collection bin. I like that a lot because I can more easily see the fill level as it fills up. This new micro shredder produces very small pieces. My impression is that these small micro-cut pieces use up less bin area than my older crosscut shredder (larger pieces) does. The cut on this new Aurora is ~1/2" (L) by just over 2/16" inch (W), or 4mm by 12mm. My only wish (with this new Aurora shredder) is that the paper throat (that you feed through) was a wide as my older Aurora shredder. My old Aurora has a 9.5" feed opening and this new one has a narrower 8.5" opening. This is not a negative, just a difference that I noticed with this new shredder. My old Aurora was what you could call a "dumb shredder" with little to no safety protection built into it. This new Aurora has more safety features and control circuitry which means it could have more to fail down the road. Time will tell if a get 8+ years of service from this new shredder. I do like that it only requires using a little vegetable oil for lubrication and does not need those pre-lubricated sheets that some shredders require. I like it a lot so far and hope that this new Aurora lives up to the heritage laid down by it's much older predecessor! Update 11-08-15: Still a great product and I have had no issues (or failures) with it in regular use. This product is living up to the previous excellent Aurora designs I have owned in the past. It does a fantastic job of shredding everything from paper to old credit cards and CDs. ... show more

  • The perfect size for the house
Model: AU1000MA
I previously used a 4-5 page cross cut shredder that I purchased about 15-20 years ago. I know, it lasted a long time. When it stopped working it was just dead, no chance on fixing it. I wanted to get a new version that could process more paper and run longer during shredding. My old paper shredder did not really take 4-5 pages, it was more like 1-2 credit card statement pages. And it would jam occasionally and get hot enough that I would have to stop for 20-30 minutes to let it cool down. This shredder has addressed those issues, it will easily take 5-8 credit card statement pages. I didn't try 10 but I think it would take it as well. I did try 10 regular paper thickness pages and no issues. This unit is much quieter than my old unit. I would say a person would not hear it running from down the hall in the house. I have not had it shut down to cool off yet. These two things really make this unit much better for me. I did consider the lower page units but also noticed their over heat down time was much longer than this unit. If you want to shred you really need it to work for your typical situation otherwise it becomes a pain and you end up having stacks of paper to shred laying next to the shredder and run them through over several days, when convenient. If you typically have a pile of papers to shred you are better off getting a unit like this one. The cross cut paper size matched my old unit, it is small, too small to try to reassemble, particularly when mixed with 30-50 other sheets. I feel this size provides the security I need. The other large cut shredders leave too much paper and it would be possible to expose an important number on one cut piece. What is the sense to shred if it does not completely destroy the document. This unit is a little heavy, not too heavy but not something you lift with one hand to take into the other room. It does have two handles on the sides that makes it easier to lift. Also, this unit has wheels and that is the best way to move it around. The size of the unit is larger than others that you see in the store, but not too large. It does look like a piece of office furniture or something of the like. When people see it they ask what is that. But really it is not all that bad, a bit bigger than my kitchen garage can (not as tall). Most importantly it gets the job done for shredding the typical house papers you get in the mail. Time will tell if it will last as long as my last shredder. I feel this unit has enough capacity that I will not overwork it. ... show more

  • Overall A Good Shredder
Model: AU1000MA
I purchased this to replace an old Fellowes unit that finally gave it up. Things I like about this one: - It's very quiet - The waste bin is large and holds a lot of confetti - It thoroughly shreds papers into small bits for security - It shuts itself off after being idle to conserve electricity - The credit card shredder works well, just don't feed it a fancy metal card! - The Bin Full warning light is a nice feature - The roll-around wheels are handy so I can push it back under the desk when not in use Things I'm not wild about: - It's kind of slow. I suppose that is a function of the micro shredding compared with my old shredder. Not a big deal in my case since it is not for heavy duty use. - The slot for feeding paper is quite thin and it is challenging to get the paper to feed straight. I assume that is for safety, but still a bit of a pain. - While the bin holds lots of shreddies, it is difficult to empty into a trash bag without making a mess. I haven't had it overheat and shut off yet, so I don't know how long it will run, but it has run for over 30 minutes without a problem. Overall, I'm happy with it and hope it holds up as long as its predecessor did (over 10 years). ... show more
