  • Love the smaller size! Be careful about 5Ghz wi-fi networks sharing the SSID with 2.4Ghz
Color: Silver Style: WiFi Smart Lock
I owned the 3rd generation of this smart lock and purchased the 4th generation as soon as it was available from August. In my opinion, the smaller size is so much more comfortable and looks less "chunky" and out of place. I also like the simpler, integrated wi-fi support and not having to run the separate Connect bridge nearby. I also have the August smart keypad from my 3rd gen install and it still works with my new lock. Overall, I love my 4th generation August lock and think it looks great. However, I did have a difficult time adding this new 4th generation to my home wi-fi network. Like some other IoT devices, the August lock only works with 2.4Ghz and doesn't like it if you have 5Ghz running with the same SSID as 2.4Ghz. My experience is this challenge is only at connect time -- Once you get these IoT devices successfully connected to your 2.4Ghz network then they can coexist and work fine with 5Ghz sharing the SSID from then on. I run a Netgear Orbi AX mesh system that defaults to and really likes to have the two wi-fi networks with the same SSID. This prevented the 4th gen August lock from connecting to my home wi-fi no matter what I tried (including modifying security settings, trying a guest network, temporarily hiding the 5Ghz network, lowering the power of the 5Ghz to 25%). Strangely, I recall having similar issues initially connecting the 3rd generation Connect but back then my workarounds were successful and got it connected. I was finally able to get my 4th gen connected by telnet'ing to my Orbi AX and turning off the 5Ghz radio. After it was successfully connected, I turned 5Ghz back on and everything still works now. However, I worry that other August customers with similar 5Ghz wi-fi setups may have issues and not have the technical ability to workaround any initial wi-fi connect issues if their 5Ghz network shares the same SSID as 2.4Ghz. ... show more

  • You might want to pass on this one
Color: Silver Style: WiFi Smart Lock
I really like the lock and it was easy to install. That's about all I can say on the pros. Now for the cons. The app is very poor. The step by step instructions looped about 10 times in the app. After it locked up 2 or 3 times I finally got through it. The setup procedures failed 5 or 6 times. I switched phones and it locked another two or three times before the setup was complete. Then it said to calibrate. Over and over again. I had to look up how to do it in the app. It's buried deep in the settings. Put a button to calibrate on the notification. Some of the settings work the first time and others required 3 or 4 attempts. Others stated that it needed to connect to work even though it was connected. Same thing with the invites. Repeat it 2 or 3 times for that to work right. I had delete and readd the invites. The help isn't embedded into the app, but it's a web redirect circa 2009. I was really hoping for something better than alpha quality code for a 4th generation 250 dollar device. I'm sure there are better options out there. ... show more

  • WASTE OF TIME!
Color: Matte Black Style: WiFi Smart Lock
Through the years, I have owned every version of the August Smart Lock. The build quality of the new August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, 4th Generation is superb and the device is easy to install on the door; however, the August App is clumsy and does not always connect with the lock. After many attempts, the integration with the HomeKit and Alexa could not be performed. I have reinstalled the functioning August Smart Lock Pro and am returning the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock to Amazon. Take my advice: save your precious time and avoid the purchase of this version until August fixes the many problems. ... show more

  • Locksmith Review
Color: Matte Black Style: WiFi Smart Lock
The media could not be loaded. I am interested in smart locks and thought I would try out the August. After installing the lock I noticed that the motor is every under powered to drive the deadbolt. If it encounters any resistance from an uneven strike plate (common in older homes) the motor that drives in the deadbolt stops and does not lock completely. Also the plastic adapter that fits into the tailpiece has a lot of play in the fitting. If you use the August manually after a few days it will eventually become lose and sag in the housing. It did not matter how many times I tightened it. The internal parts are the most concerning. The Kwikset Smart Lock is also infamous for plastic internal parts. This lock can be easily defeated with a flat-head screwdriver placed in the key way and twist by using a pair of pliers. The plastic parts, unlike metal, can be stripped when applying enough force and the deadbolt can be unlocked without a key. In my professional opinion the August Smart Lock is a novelty and should not be used to protect your home. ... show more

  • Auto-Unlock Doesn't Consistently Work.
Color: Silver Style: WiFi Smart Lock
If any of you that were in the same boat as me and were waiting on August to work the bugs out of the 3rd gen....well, they haven't. If you're going to buy this lock, you need to buy the August Keypad with it. I've had the 4th gen lock installed for about a week with auto-unlock enabled. It has already failed to unlock 3 times when arriving home. This is based on your phone re entering WiFi range. I am broadcasting 2.4 and 5 SIDS at home. My phone obviously has both networks saved. I understand that August doesn't support 5GHZ, but it was my understanding that was only an issue during setup. Clearly it isn't. I doubt many of you want to limit your phone speed at home by not allowing it to connect to 5GHZ. The bluetooth lock and unlock from the phone app seems to work. I've never tried it from more than 10 feet from the lock It was easy to install. Took about 5 minutes. My Alexa can see the lock but cannot control it, so interfacing with Alexa gets zero stars. I suspect the additional August bridge is required to make this work. So, lock, keypad and bridge are all required to make this a fully functioning lock. Kinda disappointing since they sell them all separately. ... show more
