Description
The DVAG11N heater from Ashley Hearth Products makes the perfect solution for zoned heating. The space saving direct vent furnace design mounts to an exterior wall and the adjustable vent assembly adjusts to fit walls from 4-1/2 inches to 10 inches thick. For clean, comfortable heat when and where you want it, the gas flame is completely sealed inside, away from all contact with room air. Air necessary for combustion is drawn into the chamber from outside through the vent and combustion products are vented directly to the outside. Only clean, gentle heat, in continuous circulation is delivered into the room. Windows and doors stay closed because no room air is used for combustion. So with this heater I noticed that there was a lot of issues with people lighting it and I feel that's user error. You need to prime the line with gas before it can light. But once it's primed, it's pretty easy to get going. The box was damaged In transit. But didn't affect the heater.

I have to write this review to express how happy I am with the heater. I had it installed to replace Williams 14k direct vent, the model that I had issues with since 2007 but kept buying for lack of the alternative, 3 units total in 14 years. And finally, I found the great replacement, and half the price at the same time! This wonderful heater is similar size, making constant 57F temperature, while set at 1st heat mark. I have a free standing brick studio building, with zero insulation in the walls, while outside temperature varied from 15F to 55F, the inside stayed perfect for storage. When I set the dial to 2, the temperature easily went to 61, perfect for working on projects inside, during winter in February in New York area. Didn't try 3 or 4 setting on a thermostat, no need to sweat! And the best of all, after 5 weeks of the heater operation, nor once the pilot light went out, dispite some strong winds, which caused other model I've had for years to be constantly relit (what a pain in the neck), I could never be certain the pipes wouldn't freeze one windy night! The installation went very smoothly, the hole in the wall I had before worked perfectly. My only complaint was about 2.5" screws included to mount the frame to the wall. Those stripped while being screwed into predrilled 2x4 wood frame boards in the wall. All 4 stripped completely, had to use pliers to take out, painfully slow process! Overall, I give this heater 5 stars so far.

I bought this to heat an insulated single car garage. It replaces a ventless gas heater of about the same BTU output. Installation was pretty straightforward and the directions were pretty clear. BUT I wanted to install directly to dry wall. This requires installing a six inch deep, ugly, unpainted spacer. So while the heater itself is pretty unattractive but at least relatively compact, once you add the spacer, its downright ugly and bulky. This uses a piezo ignitor to light the pilot light just like my older ventless heater but the design is so bad, it will not light. It took DAYS of fiddling to get it to light. Absolutely useless and frustrating. The ventless heater always lit on the first try. Once I finally got it lit, I thought I would just leave it on but just the pilot puts out a fair bit of heat. So I had to turn it off. I was hoping the next time would be easier but it was not. You might still be thinking that this is cheap enough that it might be worth it. I would reconsider. The thermostat kind of sucks too. Now that its been on for a few months, I can say that it can't regulate the temperature worth a darn. The ventless heater used to do pretty well. This unit seems to vary significantly. I'd say 66 to 72 is about as good as it gets. There's lots of variables so its hard to be precise. I am now trying to add a fan to circulate air in the garage but it doesn't seem to help much. Finally, I would say this is about as inefficient as it gets. Most of my heat seems to be going outside. The unit seems to be running all the time now that its December. I am not sure what my gas bills will be but I think I am in for an unpleasant surprise.

Needed to replace my ~50 year-old heater (R.I.P. dear old Warm Morning heater) so I bought this one. Know up front because I didn't, that this heater requires and comes with a special air inlet-outlet pipe. I couldn't simply put this Ashley where the other heater sat because that retired heater vents through the roof without the special required pipe. So I found another spot for the Ashley and it works great in my 3-room one story house. I maybe didn't have to, but I used some electric space heaters in other areas of the house. The only problem with the Ashley heater, but understandable, is that when I first turned it on, it smelled bad for ~6 hours - something was burning off, but the smell eventually went away. It set off my smoke alarm even though I couldn't see any smoke, so I just unplugged the alarm for the rest of the day. Despite the cold on that early October day, I let the heater run with a door cracked open to make sure I got some fresh air and didn't die, which might have been a bummer. Since that smell stopped, the heater has performed great and I've never even turned it up past 3.5 of the 1 - 5 temperature dial. It has a button pilot-light that started on the 1st (or was it the 2nd?) push. It came without a little nut that connects a rod through the outside vent into the heater's interior to help hold it in place. I called customer service, who sent me a bag of parts that didn't have the nut in it, so I just went to a hardware store.

I purchased a house with an addition that has electric heat. Last fall we turned on the electric heat, and immediately saw a spike in our electric bill, went from 70=>170. Considering the options, this product seemed like a solution. I did not have natural gas near the location we need the heat. So, consider this a two part project. Getting the gas to the location, and installing the heater. I began the installation of the stove: 1) Consider the location as the coldest point in the room, or the furthest point from other heat sources. 2) Consider how the exhaust will interact with the structure, windows, doors, traffic. 3) find your studs and make a test hole to see what's hidden behind the drywall. I found a powerline that I had to consider. I ended shifting the heater up 6 inches higher than I originally planned. 4) Cut the required square opening on the inner wall, and the outer wall. Easy to say, but takes time to get right. 5) I boxed the opening so it would not allow air to filter either from the inside or the outside. This was not discussed in the directions. I used drywall and materials I had available. 6) Use the metal box provided with the kit that goes into the opening. 7) I tried to use the wall fasteners, but they were cheap (like others have mentioned as well), replace them with good decking screws. Mount the heater on the inside wall. 8) cut the tubes and the threaded rod following the formula on the instructions. Make sure the tubes have a slight incline so moisture drips outside. 9) the outside plate has no fastners, it basically gets glued to the siding. I ended up using an entire tube of silicon caulk, I marked the wall to know the desired final position of the outside plate. I used the threaded rod to sandwich the outside plate to the wall, but it is NOT sufficient in my case to hold the plate while the caulk is drying. My siding is vinyl, so I did not want to use nails etc to temporarily hold the plate. I ended up using some spare pipe to set the bottom edge, and the threaded rod to pulling the plate to the siding. 24 hours later the outside was complete. On the inside of the house I added a metal heat shield above the heater to avoid high temperatures just above the heater on the drywall. I had read a number of others describing the wall as getting very hot. Time will tell if this a good solution or not. I will add more re the gas installation at a later time. Part 2) I used black pipe and CSST (corrugated Stainless Steel Tube)to get the natural gas to the heater. CSST is easy to route, just confirm code, for me it needed to be protected at any point below 6 foot where damage could occur. I used black Iron below 6 foot, and through the walls, and used the CSST along the eave. Then I bled the gas line to make the start easier. I had a small problem with the rotating knob, it would not rotate to the pilot position. Seemed it had a burr on the knob to button interface. Burr removed, it works as it should. Pilot lights easily, and as it is a windy day, I am able to confirm it does not easily blow out. Rotating the temperature control valve, you can hear the click as it passes from the pilot region to the temperature control region. Temp set at 2, a nice low flame. Windows open and an exhaust fan because the new metal really has a lot of odor. I let it run on low for an hour, and opened all the windows while running an exhaust fan. This evening, the odor has diminished, and I am not aware of further odors. At the lowest setting, it cycles on and off with the temperature of the room. Seems to be operating very well. Point of clarification. I had added a heat plate on the wall above the heater to avoid excessive heat to the drywall. Seems to be working very well. Minimal use at this point, so I will update with more usage. Second point, outside I have vinyl siding, and am a bit concerned about damaging the siding with heat. I used magnets to mount an aluminum louver onto the metal plate (exhaust and air intake). The magnets sandwich the aluminum to the metal plate. I want to avoid a problem, so I cannot honestly say it would have been a problem... I cannot see the downside of a little precaution. More to follow after a few weeks of usage.

This Ashley Hearth unit has proven to be an excellent replacement for a 20 year old unit that performed well. The Ashley draws all its combustion air from outside via the concentric through-the-wall vent pipe that also routes its exhaust. No fumes enter the room. The unit is extremely quiet and easy to light and control. The Ashley Hearth unit has no electrical connection or requirement. In a power failure, it continues to heat my small (240 sq ft) guest cottage dependably and well. I believe it is also available with a propane orfice for real off-the-grid applications.

Hooked it up, and the heat won't go past the number 2 setting. Pilot light just goes out. Very unsatisfied. $400 down the drain. I don't make much, so this is a small fortune just gone. These positive feedbacks had my hopes up!

It gets the wall REALLY hot. So hot you can't touch it. 207f according to a thermometer. We have wood paneling which gives cause for concern. It should sit farther out from the wall than what the spacers allow. Like 1 inch instead of 1/4" or have more adequate heat shielding that extends above the heater. I'm going to install sheet aluminum behind and above it as a heat sink. The pilot light started out blue but turned into a whispy orange flame that is tall, almost touching the sight glass so that's not right but I don't know why it's doing it. Seems it's sending too much gas to the pilot or the pilot isn't made right, or has some gunk in it let over from manufacturing. The long screw for attachment of the outdoor plate and vent cap was bent, and it's just a piece of all thread. The flathead screw head that goes on it comes off when you try to back the screw out which is a pain in the butt. It also doesn't heat super very well. 17000 btu makes it sound like it'll be only slightly cooler than the 20,000 btu unit I replaced with it, but at 70% efficiency which is only disclosed after you have the unit in your hands it's only 11900btu which is 60% of what I had before from a blue flame heater. It warms it up in the room eventually but you'd need two of them to get as much heat out as we had before. Company that makes it is basically unreachable for contact. They don't even have an email. You can contact them by text but they just try to gaslight you into admitting you did something wrong on the install instead of offering solutions to their dangerous and poorly designed product. It makes heat and will work if you are able to fab up your own heat shielding or install on a non-flammable wall but don't make the mistake of thinking that it's a complete kit. You'll need to be able to do your own manufacturing to make this thing work. Update - the way that the pilot light burns with a dirty orange flame makes it so that it clogs the pilot light and sight glass with soot and the pilot light won't light. I'll have to take the whole thing apart to clean it. Very disappointed with this thing for that. Update, the ignitors are on the fritz. Thermocouple was damaged too. The design of the thing requires that to take the front off to clean it or replace the ignitor, you have to take the whole stove off the wall and disassemble it which is ridiculous. Everything is just cheap sheet metal fit and screwed together in the worst way possible. The company won't honor the warranty and is giving me the runaround on buying replacement parts. customer service representatives seem to think they are some kind of gas experts and want to argue with me for no reason. I just need parts to replace the junk that came on it and they don't wanna sell me any.
