  • Works well with Apple
This and other Aqara products we own work very well with Apple HomeKit. Very easy to setup and this seems as reliable as the others. Found that a wired connection is the best way to go. The chime/hub already requires a wired usb power supply. The doorbell camera does not last long on batteries. Purchased an inexpensive UPS backup battery that supports 12v out to Doorbell and a 5v usb out to Chime. Provides battery backup to both. Installed in the basement. Installed the chime on the wall inside hallway where the original was and ran usb power down to basement. The camera image quality is good, but not the greatest. Sound quality is also ok. Overall if your smart home is Apple HomeKit and you are somewhat handy, I would recommend. ... show more

  • Worked with 50 year old doorbell wiring.
PRO's 1. Compatible with Apple Homekit Secure Video. 2. Capable of 24/7 recording of security video to local Chime Repeater device. 3. Highly compressed video, but acceptable quality. 4. Reasonable cost. 5. Worked with the existing doorbell wiring of my 50 year old house. The rating on the house chime transformer is “16V 10VA”. CON's 1. The G4 is a doorbell. Why doesn't it ring the existing physical chimes wired into my house? Shouldn't a doorbell duplicate the functionality of the product it is replacing, before adding additional features? 2. Using the Aqara Chime Repeater as a chime compromises local video recording security. The 24/7 security recordings are stored on the repeater (optional micro SD card). What's the value of concealing the repeater/recordings if a thief can just press the doorbell to find the hidden location? And walk away with the security recordings? 3. The G4 can’t be used exclusively with Apple Home App. Aqara will allow G4 firmware updates thru their Home App without requiring "User Login" (There's a tiny "Homekit Mode" link at bottom of the app Login screen). But using the G4's 24/7 local video storage requires login and acceptance of Aqara’s Privacy Policy. Quickly skimming the policy, Aqara reserves the right to collect ALOT of personal data. 4. Head chopping of live video. Existing doorbell wiring is typically located at waist level. The G4 uses Landscape rather than Portrait mode. Anyone close enough to press the doorbell is too close to see their face on LIVE feed. Same problem with Amazon packages being out of view on the bottom of a LIVE feed. User must replay the video clip to get details. Annoying, but not a "Deal Breaker" for me. OPINION The Aqara G4 is a good product. But having to use the Aqara app for local 24x7 video recording is a huge negative. Apple Homekit Secure Video compatibility and local 24/7 video recording storage were key reasons for buying the Aqara G4. I trust Apple to safeguard my privacy. I can't say the same about the security camera industry. Having to choose between 24/7 video security recordings and allowing Aqara to harvest my data is a huge negative for me. Hopefully the option for Local Video Storage will be added to Apple Home app at some point. ... show more

  • Works great, easy setup
Great easy setup - the easiest I've encountered with a smart doorbelll. Powered chime with wireless connection is a great idea and allows you to place chime anywhere you want. Hope they allow purchase of more to connect to place in multiple spots. Having the option of batteries is great although Im using the original power from the unsmart doorbell. Connects to apple home so I don't need any additional subscription. Angle of view could be slightly wider but that's the only thing so far. Great Product overall!! ... show more

  • Terrible Battery Life, Doesn't Work Wired
I've never written an Amazon review before but felt compelled to warn others from making the same mistake I did. I'm coming up on 6 months of owning this thing and it's been a frustrating mess of an experience. The doorbell "works" when on battery power, but you lose access to most of the features you'd actually want a smart doorbell for, and critically, you'll have to budget for all the batteries you're gonna be buying to keep this thing going. As other reviews note, this thing goes through batteries at a ridiculous pace. It's 6 AA batteries every time you need to replace them, and even on the most restrictive power saving mode, where the thing is almost just a regular doorbell, it'll still get nowhere near the advertised battery life. So wiring the thing would solve all problems right? You would think, considering Aqara says it'll work with just about any transformer, almost any kind of voltage, AC, DC, no problem. Or so they say, it'll work marvelously for about a week after you wire it, all the functions running and no more low battery spam. Then, it'll simply just stop working. The doorbell consists of two parts: the actual doorbell, and a chime repeater you place inside the home that the doorbell wirelessly connects to. Some time after you go wired, it'll stop connecting to the repeater, and the doorbell becomes a useless brick on your front door. The doorbell won't ring, you won't receive any alerts, and you can't access the video feed. Go online and you'll find hundreds of posts from other owners with the same issue after wiring the doorbell. Contact Aqara support and they'll give you increasingly ridiculous suggestions to get it working again. Reset the doorbell, not working? Ok turn off night vision, no? Turn off accidental deletion protection, turn off tamper protection, and so on. One of these will magically fix it, which I suspect is merely coincidence, since you'll get about another week before it's broken again. Clearly something is wrong when using this thing on wired power, and Aqara either can't figure it out or refuses to. In short, if you aren't going to use wired power, and you're ok with having a monthly battery budget just for your doorbell, then get this. Otherwise, look for a doorbell that actually works like it's supposed to. ... show more
