  • Clips Miniature Poodle Hair Smoothly
Originally when first handling the removable blade, I remembered struggling to follow the provided instructions. After having used it for half a dozen trims, I know to push down the button at the base of the blade to release the blade. Be sure NOT to push in the hinge blade holder until you slide in the blade (otherwise you'll have to pry it back out). Once you place the blade in, turn on the switch briefly to ensure that the blade locks down correctly into the motor - the blade has one piece that moves back and forth relative to the back plate and will require jostling to catch onto the motor hook. If the blade still does not sit down relatively flat against the housing, it probably means that this moving blade needs to be slid back towards the center - you can actually slide it entirely out to clean which means it can also be pushed out of joint. The steel Andis blades get hot fast so I'm always testing against my skin as I use it and cooling down with Andis cool care spray throughout. I spray both sides and turn the switch on for a second to get it into the teeth then wipe the blade down so I don't streak my dog with the spray. The clipper comes with #10 which I use for the face, feet and sanitary area (butt and around to stomach). As a beginner, I'm happy with this length as opposed to the shorter #15 - plus I like a little fuzz which I think is nicer and less aggravating to my dog's skin. I have a miniature poodle which requires trimming often. The blades cut through her thick chocolate hair cleanly and I use the #10 to give her poodle feet where I dig out the hair between her toes in her webbing. I've purchased in addition, the #4FC for a nice 3/8" soft coat that provides her sun protection and most recently the #7FC 1/8" blade for the humid NYC summer. The cord is plenty long for my small dog needs and I try to keep it out of the way by keeping it to the outside of my cutting arm. I rarely use the higher speed and doubt that I actually need it. Although my dog is small, I still require a couple of hours to trim her and have lately been doing her feet on a separate day so I break up the ordeal for my dog. I like to clip my dog all over including legs and ears for a practical, clean cut. (The only vanity is her pompom tail). For small poodle owners, I recommend Terra Nova's The Toy & Miniature Poodle which goes into detail how to trim them. I haven't been able to find a good video yet and instead surf youtube. The product feels well-made and durable. The motor is not particularly loud nor vibrates too much. It is easy to clean up after trimming - I use an old toothbrush to brush out the blades and exposed attachment area. You can also remove the top plastic cap and lightly brush the top area. The box comes with a 4oz bottle of clipper oil too which you should apply to the blade before use, but be sure to wipe off. Overall, feels like a professional product and appears to cut as smoothly as the ones I see at the groomers. ... show more

  • awesome clippers for my poodle
I rarely write reviews but I felt it was worth it for this item... I called Andis directly and their customer service rep recommended this clipper for my pure-bred Klein poodle (he is medium-sized dog, slightly larger than a Cocker Spaniel). His fur is thick and curly, and I was concerned about getting the right clipper since they have so many to choose from. She said there was no need to get a higher speed one for his fur, especially because the higher speeds get hotter. Now, keep in mind I have NEVER EVER used clippers before, not even on people. My dog stands very still and is very tolerant of grooming, so I lucked out in that respect. He did not get startled by the clippers and they make a low buzzing noise that he tolerated without freaking out. These clippers were amazing for a first time user, and I am so glad I chose them. They never got hot. They did get warm, but because I was moving slow and taking short 10-15 second breaks, it never got too hot. The blades are sharp, and the Andis customer rep said that that they sharpen any dull blades for $5. I had almost purchased the ceramic blades, but once she told me that, I changed all my blades to metal, because they have more utility over the long run. (ceramic blades cannot be sharpened). The blades are sharp and at the higher speed setting, went through his fur with no problem at all. I love this product and my dog was happier (and cooler) after his shave. I used a 3 3/4 blade to get his summer clip done - it leaves about a 1/2 inch of fur, and the included #10 on his face and "sanitary" area for a closer shave. My tips for first-time at-home groomers - 1) Use on clean, dry fur only. 2) MAKE SURE you comb out ALL the mats... the clippers will snag on any mats and that could hurt your dog and send your grooming session downhill. Even though I thought I combed my dog out, I still hit a few snags, and I would immediately stop, set down the clippers and comb out the mat. I will make doubly sure the next time I do this so that I don't have to stop and start so often. 3) There is no need to hurry. It took me about 90 minutes to finish grooming my dog, and I'm sure I'll get faster as we go. The clippers aren't too heavy and I did not get fatigued while using them. 4) I put my dog in a dry empty baby bathtub. That allowed me to position ourselves near a convenient outlet, so having a corded clipper was no issue. It also made cleanup a breeze. I highly recommend this item. Totally worth the money. ... show more

  • First time grooming revealed professional results!
I just got this yesterday and immediately groomed my two Mini-Schnauzers. My groomer quit and I decided to try home grooming. I was completely scared, but after reading reviews and clipping advice online, I decided to just plow through it. I can't believe that the results I got are actually better than anything I've ever paid a professional to do! I had plenty of pictures next to me to consult, which helped. The clippers worked amazingly well. I decided to use the 7FC on their head and body, and the 3 3/4FC on their legs and belly. The 7FC length is a nice body length-short without being bald and leaving a soft coat. I don't think I'll ever use the #10 blade that came with the unit-too short for my taste. The 3 3/4FC is perfect for the legs because I didn't want to hand clip them and this blade allows the ease of razor clipping while still leaving my dogs with the typical 2 length schnauzer cut. A perfect 3 season cut which will keep all the stickers off of them! I'll have to wait for cold weather to decide if I will vary the length. What I love about this is that I can cut them the way I prefer, instead of always asking my groomer to cut this part of their body shorter or keep this part longer! The clipper is quiet, so my girls were very calm and sat still through most of the cutting. It took 3 hours to completely shape, cut, trim eyebrows, and bathe 2 dogs. The unit never got hot as some reviewers suggested. I figure over time with practice that my cutting time will keep getting shorter! I definitely recommend a quality clipper such as ths Andis 22340 for anyone thinking of grooming their own dogs! ... show more
