  • Works with Pixel 8 Pro
Color: Silver
Wanted the unit from the main player in this space, but wasn't happy with the reviews of that product, so I started exploring other options. People said this one was both more affordable and had better resolution. So I took the leap. And I don't regret it. Takes a little bit longer than I'd expect to start up, and you have to hold the phone in a weird way to avoid blocking the sensor, but overall it works very well. ... show more

  • Better than my Flir - The only problem is you have to remove your phone case
Color: Silver
I have a Flir One Gen 3 that I have used for about 3 years now. I'm using that for comparison. As it stands, the Flir isn't even on the same level (even the pro). At the time of this review the Ancel is only $30 more than the Gen 3. The image quality is significantly better. It will also record video, unlike the Flir Gen 3. There is no built-in battery which is actually a good thing since there is no battery that will go bad and it powers directly from your device. The Ancel is about half the size of the Flir. The only thing lacking on this is an adjustable USB port and you have to remove your phone case to use it. No Adjustable USB Connection This is the one area where Flir is best. Flir patented the adjustable connector and I doubt we will see this on other devices anytime soon. The Flir has a knob that rotates and adjusts the depth of the USB port. I have a heavy duty case on my phone and I have to remove it to use the Ancel. And then, when the case is removed the Ancel does not fit snug to the phone (there is a gap to make room for a super thin case). I have another phone with a thinner case and it still would not connect without removing the case. I could see this being a big deterrent for people that plan to use this on a jobsite. Software & Connectivity Connecting to the Ancel IR101 is seamless. I have never had any problems with it detecting the device on my phone. This has always been a battle with my Flir Gen 3. The Ancel will also connect to a computer. This adds just another layer of functionality and options. You can edit photos at a later time and add points with temperature readings. You cannot do that with video. Image Quality The IR resolution is way higher than the Flir models, even the Flir One Pro. Flir does some trickery by overlaying a low resolution IR image (80x60) on top of a high resolution camera image. The Ancel IR101 has a high resolution IR camera (256x192) that is clear enough to not require an overlay image. Accuracy & Range This is a tough one to rate. You need to have a general idea of the emissivity of the surface that you are trying to get temperatures from. They provide a table with examples and you can create multiple custom settings that can be saved for future use. Oddly you cannot label them so you may forget what they were for. I want to check temperatures for 3D printing and this model can easily handle the higher temperatures. I did have some difficulty getting it to accurately read the temperature of the printer nozzle. The emissivity value and distance seem to have a significant impact on the temperature that is read. I did encounter a bug that would not let me enter an emissivity value under 0.1. It should allow you to enter a range from 0.01 to 1.0. Overall this is an excellent USB IR attachment. The only thing holding this back from 5 stars is the requirement to remove your phone case to use this. The software has a lot of features and I still have much more to explore. ... show more

  • Incredibly Useful Little Device!
Color: Silver
(This review is for the Ancel IR101 Thermal Camera.) What a wonderful tool! The readings seem quite accurate, according to a simple laser IR thermometer that I have. The resolution of the image isn't huge, but it's more than enough to clearly identify features and accurately locate details. And that's what this is so great for—quickly visualizing the temperatures in a small area. It has allowed me to locate heat loss from my home, to assess the temperature of electronics, and I hope to use it to help with car diagnostics and locating rodents in an outbuilding. The app is straightforward to use, and has worked without issue. The image updates in real time with no lag, and the heat map display is intuitive. It has a wide range of options, including taking the temperature of different patterns or points and generating a very simple "report". The "report" doesn't seem particularly useful, but I do wish that my home inspector had used something like this device. I had no idea that something like this was available at such a reasonable price point. It allows you to get so much data and really see the world in a different way, and I'm still considering the many ways in which it might continue to be useful. ... show more

  • A Game Changer for Finding Air and Water Leaks
Color: Grey
I previously worked for Fluke, which produces a full array of infrared handheld devices to compete with FLIR. These devices range from $3k - $25k and are built for professional use, with the prices to match. What Ancel is able to offer in a $300 device is pretty amazing. While people may quibble with temperature accuracy of +/-2° C, that's missing the point. What this device is able to do is to clearly portray differences in temperature over a wide area. That's what is amazingly helpful. I have a few water spots on my ceiling that I was wondering whether they were active leaks or something that I have just never noticed before. I took out this device and BEHOLD - no temperature difference (the area is dry/no water). What a relief! This device is not only saving me mental anguish, but also making short work of determining what is and isn't a problem. Now I can repaint without worry. A few things to note: 1) Tablet usage: I used this device on an Android tablet with the app installed, as I'm an Apple phone user. On a tablet with a large screen, I couldn't perfectly synch the camera and the thermal image overlay. The camera image was never able to overlay my thermal image exactly, but rather just showed up in the upper left corner of the thermal image. Not a dealbreaker, but if it could be calibrated to overlay cleanly, it would improve the user experience. 2) UI: The user interface is pretty basic and not "Apple simple". Lots of menus and sub-menus, but I was able to get it up and running after a few minutes of messing around with it. 3) Image: The closer you are to the emitting object, the better the resolution. I wasn't able to get anything that wasn't pretty pixelated, but for my purposes it didn't matter. I was just looking for area coverage. Some of the images I'm seeing in reviews are pretty amazing, so it may be an issue of the app being designed for smaller phone screens and just not looking great once they're expanded to fit a large tablet screen. In summation, a great IR sensor for the money that worked extremely well for me and I would recommend to anyone. You should have this device in your home to find hot and cold spots for safety and thermal efficiency reasons. ... show more
