  • Great for Heat Safety Assessments
Style: IR101 Grey fit for Android (USB C Port)
Frankly, this thing is a riot. It’s made for Windows and Android, so I was basically out of luck with macOS—but since I work in a department full of laptops, that wasn’t a dealbreaker. We recently had a heat advisory committee planning to assess high-risk areas in our park system down here in the Deep South, and I was able to Velcro this to the back of a laptop and walk around getting some solid thermal images of problem spots. To take it a step further, I connected a regular webcam to the same laptop for a real-time non-thermal view. That let me grab screenshots and provide side-by-side visuals for the committee’s report. I thought it was a handy way to set it up with a laptop. I’ve also used this around my house to spot areas of heat gain and loss, which helped me find and fix insulation issues. It’s really easy to use—probably even easier on an Android phone. I’ve used other thermal cameras before, and these are definitely getting better over time. The software on this one is actually pretty good. I like that it marks floating high and low temps right on the image. Still not sure why thermal imagers are so expensive across the board, but the size and portability of this one are awesome. It’s tiny, comes with a nice case and a cable, and it’s small enough that you could easily lose it if it wasn’t packed up well. All in all, I think it’s a great little device. The images I’ve captured with it are going to help keep people safer in extreme heat, and that alone makes it worth it. ... show more

  • Works well, and higher resolution that some brand name products
Style: IR101 Grey fit for Android (USB C Port)
This is working well for me so far. Using the app is easy to find, download and use, and it shows real time temps in a variety of ways on the image. It is very similar to the Topdon model I have. I'm very glad this comes with a USB-C extension cable. The USB-C connector on the camera itself is too short to connect through the case I have on my camera. I wish it was longer so I wouldn't need the cable, and some companies make that length longer or adjustable. Be sure to use auto range or set the high or low range as needed. The image can look noisy if you are in the wrong temp range. One feature I still don't undestand is "bandwidth" - I know what bandwidth is, but I don't understand the context for the sliding bandwidth setting they say to use if the image looks noisy. The bandwidth of what? The camera? The cable? The USB protocoll? My phone? I have no idea. An odd and annoying thing this shares with some other devices I have that let you take pictures with an external device: the images don't automatically show up in the Photos app. I don't even know where they live. AFAIK, you have to use the "share" feature to get them out of that image prison so you can see them in the photo app. Not sure why that is, or if there is a way to see them with the Photos app without using "share". ... show more

  • A Game Changer for Finding Air and Water Leaks
Style: IR101 Grey fit for Android (USB C Port)
I previously worked for Fluke, which produces a full array of infrared handheld devices to compete with FLIR. These devices range from $3k - $25k and are built for professional use, with the prices to match. What Ancel is able to offer in a $300 device is pretty amazing. While people may quibble with temperature accuracy of +/-2° C, that's missing the point. What this device is able to do is to clearly portray differences in temperature over a wide area. That's what is amazingly helpful. I have a few water spots on my ceiling that I was wondering whether they were active leaks or something that I have just never noticed before. I took out this device and BEHOLD - no temperature difference (the area is dry/no water). What a relief! This device is not only saving me mental anguish, but also making short work of determining what is and isn't a problem. Now I can repaint without worry. A few things to note: 1) Tablet usage: I used this device on an Android tablet with the app installed, as I'm an Apple phone user. On a tablet with a large screen, I couldn't perfectly synch the camera and the thermal image overlay. The camera image was never able to overlay my thermal image exactly, but rather just showed up in the upper left corner of the thermal image. Not a dealbreaker, but if it could be calibrated to overlay cleanly, it would improve the user experience. 2) UI: The user interface is pretty basic and not "Apple simple". Lots of menus and sub-menus, but I was able to get it up and running after a few minutes of messing around with it. 3) Image: The closer you are to the emitting object, the better the resolution. I wasn't able to get anything that wasn't pretty pixelated, but for my purposes it didn't matter. I was just looking for area coverage. Some of the images I'm seeing in reviews are pretty amazing, so it may be an issue of the app being designed for smaller phone screens and just not looking great once they're expanded to fit a large tablet screen. In summation, a great IR sensor for the money that worked extremely well for me and I would recommend to anyone. You should have this device in your home to find hot and cold spots for safety and thermal efficiency reasons. ... show more
