Description

A real estate agent’s death sends shockwaves through the idyllic town of St. Denis, leading Bruno, Chief of Police, to suspect that there’s more to this tragedy than meets the eye. When Bruno stumbles upon a motionless figure in a car parked at a scenic overpass on the ridge of the Vézère valley, he’s ready to investigate. Inside, he finds a suicide note and the dead body of Monique, a successful businesswoman who rented châteaus to wealthy expats. It seems like an open-and-shut case. But Bruno can’t shake the suspicion that something sinister lurks underneath this tidy narrative. After he delivers Monique’s final messages to those most important to her, malicious gossip about Bruno begins to spread through the village. One thing leads to another, and soon Bruno faces pressure to resign from the job. Despite this disturbing turn of events, Bruno remains Bruno, never one to turn down a fine meal with good company in the French countryside. In the course of inquiry, he meets Laura—and her dog, which happens to be the same breed as his beloved basset hound. As sparks fly and Bruno realizes just how much he has at stake, he races to find out what really happened to Monique, before he loses his badge, his new love—or something even worse. Read more

  • Great Read
Have read all the Bruno, Chief of Police books. Find them highly entertaining with creative plots. You learn of interesting French dishes and wines with a bit of history. All the characters are strong, especially the women. You have got to love a good mystery! .

  • satisfying, though not the best
A nice, comfortable tale that meanders through several storylines with too many repeats of the ‘exercising horses’ trope we know so well. Bruno charms a new bunch of modern and very capable women along the way to proving, once again, that he’s the finest man in the valley. Still the author wraps the main plot (rather abruptly) up in the end. ... show more

  • Bruno Returns
Bruno, Chief of Municipal Police, returns. As do the host of other delightful characters who men make this series a joy. In this outing, Bruno is subjected to a mysterious campaign of vilification, resolves his long standard off and on romance with Isabelle, the National Police executive, and perhaps finds a new, possibly permanent, significant other. While he unraveled a possible fraud connected to the death of a local businesswoman. Bruno also shares another pleasant tutorial on the history of his community and regales us with detailed descriptions of delicious but unfortunately very unhealthy French cuisine. This could be a standalone but I wholeheartedly recommend the entire series. As Walker continues the series, the back stories get more and more complicated. My only caveat. ... show more

  • Wonderful
Full of intrigue, romance, and plot twists. I love these stories and Mr Walkers writing style. The inclusion of the bassets, food, and France keep me hooked on these stories

  • A Hectic Week in the Life of Bruno Courreges
Although portrayed as a mystery in promotional material, this Bruno book is really not a mystery at all in the usual sense. The story is more of a drama, and the so-called mystery is almost an afterthought, substantively addressed in only very, very limited sections of the book. Balance is usually a good thing, including in written works, and Martin Walker has usually managed to achieve a reasonable balance in his prior books among mystery, the daily life of his characters, and Vizere Valley regional cuisine. This novel lacks that balance and, as a result, becomes, at least at times, more of a cookbook or set of restaurant reviews than anything else. I would like the prior balance restored in Walker's next book. At root though, this novel is really about Bruno's life in rural St. Denis, his interactions with townsfolk, his friends, his cooking, his dog and horse, political maneuvering and goings-on, and so forth. I find that quite delightful in its own right. The attraction for me is the idealized nostalgia this portrait of Bruno's daily life evokes. It harkens back to a time when the local policeman was said to be a "friend" and protector of children and their families; when neighbors knew, cared about and helped each other: when merchants knew their customers by name and what they were likely to buy or order. Those attributes rarely seem to exist today, and perhaps they never did. But the portrayal creates a sense of place, calm and security. I admire this and prior Bruno books especially for this element. ... show more

  • summary
As always an excellent read from Martin Walker. It seemed to recall many of the Bruno stories and capture the excitement and relationships of the past while introducing a new “love of his life”.

  • Highly Recommended
An Enemy in the Village is written by Martin Walker. The title is a Bruno, Chief of Police Novel. Book #18 (of 18). “A real estate agent’s death sends shock waves through the idyllic town of St. Denis, leading Bruno, Chief of Police, to suspect there is more to this tragedy than meets the eye.” This title and series is every reader’s dream. The title has everything one could wish for in a ‘mystery’ novel - intrigue, an idyllic location in the south of France, a policeman known and beloved for his ethics and friendship, dogs (Bassett Hounds), a hint of romance, divine food and wine, history and culture with a bit of archeology thrown in. Highly, Highly recommended. ***** ... show more
