  • Looking for a serious microscope for your budding microbiologist? You would be wise to focus your pocket book away from this.
I wish there had been more reviews before I purchased this (I now see there is one). This is supposed to be a Christmas gift for my gifted child who is 9 and very into micro-organisms. The miscellaneous items that are in this case are very cheap looking and feeling. The microscope itself is a joke. The description said metal, so I was expecting a well made heavy metal microscope. The microscope is half plastic/half metal, when picked up it feels very light. Additionally, the size is very small, almost a toy size that my 4 year old would enjoy. I imagined it would be slightly smaller than the one I used in junior high, but heavy and well made. Things to consider: 1) Says for 8 and up: Maybe the chemicals are for 8 and up, the actual size of the microscope is very small...maybe 12"...no joke, it is that small. 2) Light/Mirror on microscope is cheaply made 3) Plastic-y feel. Looks cheap, feels cheap. 4) Accessories in the box feel and look cheap as well. 5) The 300X-600X-1200X dial is plastic If you are looking for a microscope for a child that would actually appreciate something serious, this is not what you are looking for. Keep looking. This would be excellent for a very young child (minus the chemicals) as a beginner microscope, more for a 4-5 year old. I am honestly unsure of what to do at this point, it is so close to Christmas, but I have a child that will likely be insulted by its inadequacy and take it as a personal insult on her ability. I have also ordered the 100 slide set from AmScope, I hope it is not a complete loss as well. Very Very Disappointed! The microscope says its original price is $99.96, if this is true individuals are being robbed of quality. I have been an Amazon customer for many years, I am deeply disappointed in this product. ... show more

  • Great for Beginners
This is a first time microscope for my 8 year old. She loves it and is fascinated by it. It came with some beginner items like slides, petri dish, scalpel, etc. to spark their interest. However the tweezers are huge, plastic and useless for small items. The microscope magnifies pretty well but it's hard to get things to magnify at the 1200X. Also, we tried to hatch the brine shrimp and they didn't hatch. We think the eggs may have been too old. The booklet says they won't hatch if over 5 years old. Oh well. We still have had plenty of fun checking out leaves and such. I can see that we will have to buy a better one in a year or 2 as my daughter gets older. For the price this works for now just fine. ... show more

  • My grandson, who will be 8 years old, loved this gift
The microscope kit looks great. The microscope, itself, does not seem to magnify the slides overly well. Also, use of this kit really needs to be with adult supervision. When my son-in-law helped my grandson place the slides under the microscope and adjust the viewer, my grandson was very excited at what he could see. The case is very nice to have, with a place for every item and a clasp. My advice is to always have an adult assist the child. ... show more

  • sturdy for the price
So far so good. I bought this as a Christmas gift for my daughter. It seems to be a sturdy microscope. It comes with a lot of accessories too. We have not hatched the shrimp yet but plan to do so very soon.

  • Definitely for children
Not exactly what I was expecting plus I guess during shipping the box was handle roughly. Half the slides were broken in their boxes and all the cover slides were. It's fine for a child to start to learn the basics on one. Make sure you have your own extra supplies for you will need some pretty quickly. ... show more

  • Great for beginners with young children
I think it is perfect for what it will be used for. My kids are excited about getting to use it and that's all that matters to me and wasn't a bad bad price either.

  • It's a good starter kit for my budding scientist
This item actually exceeded my expectations. I didn't realize they already had fixed sections for kids to look at and an actual experiment with growing live organisms. I wish the scope had more metal than plastic pieces, but the main parts are metal as described. It's a good starter kit for my budding scientist. ... show more
