It's nice and heavy (so doesn't move around when rolling in the hose). Brown painted outside already, so unlikely to have any rust issues. The strong metal crank on the side is good for taming heavy hoses. NOTE: the cheaper plastic hose reels invariably crack and break, and not heavy enough to stay in place. I bought this based off the reviews and it did not disappoint. It actually reels up a hose like you would expect all the cheaper ones should. It seems like it's really built to last. I was tired of wasting money on a new hose reel every year or two.

Great reel, just don't buy it on Amazon. This product is sturdy and seems to work phenomenally while not being an eyesore in my front yard. It's great and so far I highly recommend it as a product. However, this was shipped to me directly from Lowe's via a purchase made by proxy by the Amazon seller- for $30 less than the listed Amazon purchase price. Especially compared to the plastic wicker ones which I have had quite a few in the past. This one is metal and solid. It matches my house, which has a black metal roof, perfectly. It easily winds 100ft of hose. I like it so much that I ordered a 2nd one for the front of my house.

OK, maybe I'm a slow learner. After going through at least 4 plastic hose reels (even a couple with a "lifetime warranty"), I finally decided to spend a little more to see if it might make a difference. Wow. This is what I've been looking for the whole time. If I hadn't wasted money on disposable plastic reels, I could have purchased a couple more of these. I will admit that I've only had the reel for a couple of months, but just based on how solid it is and how easily is reels in 150' of hose, I am impressed and have very high expectations for longevity. Imagine being able to pull all of the hose out of the reel and it never moves. That is what this reel is capable of. Imagine effortlessly winding in an entire hose without binding or kinking. Check. I purchased two of these 2+ years ago. They're outdoors and used a few times a week. Both are still in use, working well and looking good. I'd definitely recommend these. I have been pleased with the quality. That said, last week, one of them was knocked over and the handle broke off, which is understandable with two years of weathering and rough treatment. I've emailed AMES customer service to see if a replacement part is available, since the rest of the cabinet and reel are still working great. It's disappointing when one can't get replacement parts for something this costly and well made. Hopefully, I can get this back in working order shortly. ... show more
