If your instructions don’t work, it’s not you, it’s the wrong instructions and they’ll NEVER WORK. I worked on this simple lock for HOURS with no avail!!!! One of the reviews used instructions from Kwikset but lacked the part for deleting the factory programming code. Here’s the FULL INSTRUCTIONS: here’s how to run the door handing identification process on your AmazonBasics Electronic Deadbolt: On the keypad, enter the preset Programming Code (0000). Next, press the Unlock / Lock button. Press 0, then press the Unlock / Lock button. You’ll hear the motor of the lock run, then stop after a few seconds, indicating the door handing identification process is complete. So that’s all you need to do to teach the lock the orientation of your door (door handing identification). How to Change the Default/Existing Programming Code on Your AmazonBasics Electronic Deadbolt? So after performing the door handing identification, the next thing you want to do is change the default Programming Code. As you probably know, this lock comes with a 4-digit default Programming Code (0000), and you’ll need to change the default code to ensure security. To change the default/existing Programming Code on your AmazonBasics Electronic Deadbolt, follow the steps below: Enter the default Programming Code (0000) and press the Unlock / Lock button. If you’ve previously changed the Programming Code, enter your current Programming Code and press the Unlock / Lock button. Press key 4, and then press the Unlock / Lock button. Enter a new Programming Code (4 digits), then press the Unlock / Lock button. If the lock flashes green twice and beeps twice, it means the operation is successful. So the new Programming Code is now in effect, and you can use it to program other functions in the lock. Deleting the Default User Code Like the default Programming Code, the lock also comes with a default User Code (1234). Note that Programming Code differs from User Code. Programming Code is used to put the lock in programming mode, while the User Code is used to unlock the lock via the keypad. To enable all User Codes, repeat the steps above. How to Create a One-time User Code on Your AmazonBasics Electronic Deadbolt? A one-time User Code is used just once. That is, the code expires once it is used to unlock the lock. You can create a one-time User Code for a serviceman or any guest you just want to give one-time access to your home. That said, here’s how to create a one-time User Code: Enter your current Programming Code and press the Unlock / Unlock button. Press key 9, then press the Unlock / Lock button. Enter a one-time User Code (4 to 10 digits), then press the Unlock / Lock button. Enabling/Disabling Auto-Lock This AmazonBasics Electronic Deadbolt comes with the auto-lock feature that automatically locks the lock after a few seconds (when the door closes). This lock is great! I was hesitant to buy it after reading several negative reviews on here about this lock being hard to install and program, as well as the instructions being wrong. I didn't find any of that to be true. I purchased a used, like new lock. It looks brand new and had all of the parts. I've never installed a digital lock before but this was a breeze. It fit my existing deadbolt and took all of 25 minutes to install and program. Just read the book and follow the directions precisely. I just received and installed today, so I'm not sure how long the batteries will last. I'll update my review if any problems arise.

Ok, so yes took a minute to figure out how to use. Got caught up on the verbiage. Thought program code was all I needed. Program code is to program it not to unlock it. Try out the user code they give you before setting your own user code. Once you know it works, delete all user codes and then set your user code. The programing code is good to have so that not anyone can change user codes. Wow, you guys will get it once you understand program code and user code are different and cannot be the same. Other then being dumb dumb (me), all works good. Goodbye keys and goodbye being locked out.

This was easy to install, looks great, and operates easily too. I own a Kwikset version too that cost about 3 times as much. I'm very pleased by the price of this lock and satisfied with the quality of the hardware. This is used between my wet room and garage access door, so basically indoors so weather won't ever be an issue so I cannot comment on how it holds up to that. It has an auto-lock feature juat like our kwikset locks have, but I was pleasantly surprised that you can program the length of of time you prefer before that happens. My kwikset is 30 seconds and that is too short. I set this lock to 60 seconds before the autolock initiates and that works out a lot better for things like bringing in the groceries in several trips without needed to unlock the lock each time like I used to have to do. The only con, that is not horrible but noticeable, is that entering a code makes you do it slowly with a delay between each button push or it doesn't register the push, and also that after your last number you also have to click the lock button to make it unlock (which is an unnecessary extra step that my kwikset lock doesn't make me do), but once again that's not that bad. I recommend this lock as its price point delivers a great value.

I bought this because I had a client who was looking for a no frills electronic deadbolt and he had just converted his exterior hardware to the Kwikset Halifax Square style. This deadbolt fit right in, and I was able to key it to match the rest of his house. For the cost, it wasn't bad. With any electronic deadbolt, time will tell.

It's pretty, it works well, and the batteries last a long time. BUT the buttons are big rubber jobbies that require quite the finger press to get to register. If I had to do it again, I'd get one with a flat plate of numbers that are either touch sensitive or only require a slight push.
