  • 2000 Mile Road Trip
Style: 4-bike
I'll admit, I almost passed over this bike rack because of the price -- I was worried that the lower price in comparision to some of the other, higher priced better known brands would mean lower quality and that was definitely NOT the case. It is a solid, well made piece of equipment and was ready to go as soon as it was taken out of the box. It was relatively easy to fit to my husband's vehicle (2006 Nissan Altima) and once seccure not moving anywhere. We just returned from an extended road-trip to visit family and it carried 2 adult and 1 youth bike for a total of more than 2,000 miles and the only issues we had were (1) that it took about 20 miles to get the straps adjusted so they didn't vibrate (creating an awful noise) as the car accelerated and (2) figuring out the right way to place bikes -- see my tips below. Have absolutely no other complaints, had no issues, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this bike rack. TIPS: 1. Install, put bikes on and then drive - getting up to speed to see how the straps respond. You may need to tie them off, tighten some or find a way of keeping them together to reduce vibration 2. This says it's a 4 bike rack but if you're carrying on a sedan it will likely only realistically fit 3. I can see if it's mounted from a van or SUV that it would be better able to hold 4 3. You will need a special bar adapter if you have a women's bike. Some children's bikes you may be able to get away without one. 4. Place smaller, lighter bikes toward the inside of the rack and closer to the car. We found that when the youth bike was on the outside sometimes when we'd go over a bump the weight of the other bikes would bump the youth bike off the holding cradles (though the straps still held the bike to the rack) (updated on 04.2015 to include photos from last summer) ... show more

  • its an easy 10-15 minutes to install and attach your bike
Style: 4-bike
I would give this bike rack a 4.5 out of 5 but since there are no half star rating, I'm bumping it up to a 5. Pros: - It comes pre-assembled so you can take it out of the box and install it and be on your way within 30 minutes. It does take some time to figure out where to place the bike rack, but once you've figured it out, its an easy 10-15 minutes to install and attach your bike. Pretty simple! - The product overall is well made - it's sturdy and it feels like it will last. - We were able to fit 4 bikes on the rack without any issues - 2 Fat Tire bikes and 2 mountain bikes - we rotated the handles so they bikes were able to be nestled together. - It is EASY to use - one person can install this without too much trouble & taking the bikes off the rack was a breeze (as far as putting the bikes on - see my comment in the Cons). - I didn't feel as if my jeep was weighted down with this bike rack - even with the weight of the rack and 4 bikes. I felt pretty comfortable driving with it - there was minimal swinging/creaking during our drive. We have yet to take it on a long road trip - You can use this rack on multiple vehicles so it's not restricted to just one car - this is a huge plus! Cons: - As others have stated the metal clips were concerning but I bought pads for $10 and although they weren't the best - they did protect my SUV. I'm going to try other hacks mentioned for the next trip. - You CANNOT open your trunk while this is in use, so if you need access to your trunk you will need to remove the rack and replace the rack - If mounting on an SUV (I have a Jeep Cherokee) it sits rather high so if you're small like me, you're lifting the bikes above your head to place it on the rack - I have a carbon fiber bike and it wasn't that bad, my boyfriend's bike however, i was unable to lift up without his help. Tip: - You still need to make sure you have additional bungees/zip cords to tie up the extra strap lengths so they aren't dragging on the ground and to secure your bikes together so they don't bounce into each other. We did forget to bungee the bikes after our last trail ride because we were in a hurry to get home and surprisingly the bikes were secure and did not bounce too much - but better safe than sorry, it'd be a shame to have your bikes rubbing on each other ruining the frame. - The bottom clips need to be inserted into the jam of the bottom of the trunk and that wasn't very clear - it made me nervous but once we figured it out, it was pretty simple and stayed secure. - Make sure you bring a lock and secure your bikes, it does not have a security feature included on the rack - we just used our regular locks and secured the bikes to each other AND the rack - so if someone really wanted our bikes, they'd either have to have the materials to cut through the locks or they'd have to try and steal the whole thing. For the price, the pros totally outweigh the cons. This bike rack is a great value and does the job well. Will take pictures to post the next time we use the rack. ... show more

  • Wonderful, easy to use bike carrier!
Style: 4-bike
This bike rack is wonderful for our family of 4. I have now used it 3 times, and removed it twice. I have 3 26" comfort bikes, and one 24" mountain bike. The first time I tried to load the bikes, I was frustrated, I could not get all 4 to fit. But, after trying again, I realized to strap the back end by the top cross bar, and the front end under both cross bars. This leveled the bikes out and allowed me to easily load and space them. The carrier is very easy to strap onto the trunk, even with a spoiler. And the rubber straps easily strap the bikes down and hold them very securely. The trunk has to be opened slightly to remove the side straps for storage, but that is no problem. I am very pleased with my purchase, definitely worth the money! ... show more

  • A great choice
Style: 4-bike
I worked from the early 1980's until the mid-90's at one of the top 50 bicycle stores in the country (based on sales). We sold just about every brand you could imagine. Of all of the available bike racks, the inexpensive, homely Allen 103A was the one with the fewest defects, accidents, issues, and although we sold many thousands of them, many customers wanted the sexier racks from their competitors, even though most bike shop employees at the time used the 103. Forward to present day and I know nothing about current bicycle products, but with a family, I needed a car rack that could handle 3 mtn. bikes easily. This was less expensive, and although they are no longer made in USA, i thought I would chance it. After using it this week, I am very happy with my purchase. It is very sturdy-in fact, my only complaint is that it is quite heavy...maybe they all are now? it's built like a piece of military gear though, and the fit on both my Honda Fit and a Forester is perfect. One test for me used to be: can you move the car around on it's suspension grabbing the rack, or does the rack move around. This thing is solidly attached to the car. Others I tried did not pass this test even though they were a lot more money. ... show more
