Also equipped with a no-wobble bolt to keep the rack from moving inside the hitch, the two-bike carrier is colored with a black powder-coated finish. About Allen Bike Racks Started out of founder Dick Allen's garage in 1967, Allen Sports is committed to producing the highest- quality, easiest-to-use bike, parking, and storage racks on the market. Dick Allen, a onetime aerospace engineer, opened Allen Sports after building a prototype bike carrier in his Lincoln, Massachusetts, shop in his free time. The bike enthusiast tested the trunk-mounted carrier--made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding)--on weekend excursions. Shortly afterward, Allen took his design to consumers, moving from local to national sales by 1971. Today, the company owns more than three dozen patents and operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and sells products in more than a dozen countries around the world.

  • Excellent for transporting our MTB
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
Easy assembly, well constructed and will serve our MTB transportation needs really nice. The bikes do swing freely once mounted so ordered Velcro Hook Loop Cable Tie Down Straps, 14" Length x 1" Width, Black (Pack of 10), 9" x 1" and 21" x 1" in order to safely secure the tires to the frame and the frame to the rack to minimize any bike swinging while transporting the bikes. We also have Highland (9008400) Bungee Cord Assortment Jar - 24 Piece for additional stability while the bikes are on the rack. I am sure with all of these additional items, the bikes will be safely secured to the rack and will surely eliminate any free swinging of the bikes, tires and prevent any dings to the bikes as well. Update 7/22: We finally had a chance to take our new MTB on the road with the bike rack working very nicely as expected. I didn't need to use any Bungee Cords but I did use a few velcro straps to secure the bikes to the rack and to each other in order to avoid any swinging and bumping of the bikes to the rack and to each other. These velcro straps are awesome and did their job fantastically. The rack was able to hold the bikes with no issues and the tie down straps that come with the rack do serve their purpose even though they are not the rubber type straps that you will find and see on the more expensive racks. BTW, the MTB we purchased are Diamondback 27.5 Sorrento's with small size for my wife and the large size for me. Both bikes fitted nicely on the racks but you do have to set them up in reverse direction on the rack since the handle bars would prevent you to mount them in the same direction. The anti-movement pin that comes with the rack is effective and did not have any movement of the rack while transporting the bikes. One last thing ... I came up with a "MacGyver" solution to prevent the bike closest to the vertical metal part of the rack from dinging the bike by using some unused quilting batting from my wife's quilting locker which I wrap around the rack's vertical pole and even used a couple of the velcro straps to keep it in place. My "MacGyver" design and solution is working just fine and I don't intend to ever transport the bikes in the rain but if the batting does need to be replaced for whatever reason, I can always raid my wife's quilting locker for some additional batting :-). You just cannot beat the price (we paid $99) of this rack for its functionality and craftsmanship especially if you have limited funds to otherwise purchase a more expensive model and brand. ... show more

  • High quality rack
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
There is nothing cheap about this rack. It took about 15 minutes to assemble and the instructions were pretty good. My only complaint is it does wiggle a little from left to right; but that is not because of the locking hitch bolt. The problem is the pin, with the snap that allows the rack to drop, does not fit tight. If the rack prevents the trunk from opening then you may have to live with it but it's not that bad. I'm very impressed with the quality and the price was very reasonable; it was also boxed very nicely unlike the hitch that Amazon sent me. Some adjustments I made: Wiggle: Since lifting my trunk lid does not interfere with the rack. I went to Lowes and bought a 3/8 x 3" grade 5 bolt and locking nut (has the plastic ring in it; cost 14 cents; the bolt is a buck+) these are in the specialty drawers and they can help you find them. Don't just grab any bolt get a grade 5 or 8. I then moved the bolt that came with the unit up to where the pin was and put the Lowes bolt in the lowest hole. When you tighten these, there will be no wiggle but you will not be able to rotate the rack down and the pin will need to be cut off or duct taped to the rack (my choice). Just in case: I also bought a strap on Amazon that latches on the back of the trunk lid and loops around the top of the rack. This provides some added strength when you hit a bump but you will need to unhook it to open the trunk lid. (CURT 18050 Bike Rack Stabilizer Strap; it was confusing to put on the first time). Bike strap lock adjustment: I can load both bikes with just 5"s between them but the straps locks are about 10"s apart. So I removed the red ends with an allen wrench and slipped off the plastic 8" tubes and cut them in two lengths of 3.5 and 4.5 inches. Then slipped the 4.5" tubes on then the strap locks then the 3.5" tubes and put the red ends back on. Now the bikes are snug together and this puts less pressure on the rack. At least I think so. Hopefully, none of this voids the warranty but all three of these should make the rack safer IMHO. ... show more

  • Great addition to a Subaru Outback
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
I bought this in 2023 and it was a great buy. It’s well-made and works very well. The tilt capability is incredibly useful, allowing easy access to the back of the car, even when a bike is on the rack. The installation was a breeze. I did not experience any wobbling at all on maintained roads, and I was confident that both the rack and my bike were stable when traveling on roads of all sorts. However, the straps provided will not prevent the bike from swinging so I do use 3 bungee cords to secure the bike frame and tires tightly against the rack. For the money, it’s a great product . ... show more

  • Dollar : value ratio ... EXCELLENT.
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
This is great bike rack for the money. I like that it can fit either the 1" or 2" receivers. To use in a 2" receiver you just add the included adapter plates. Feels good and solid. I was concerned that an adapter would add play and thus wobble. No, it's nice and tight. Cons: 1 -Because the bike(s) is hanging from the bar it will sway. You can solve this buy spending a lot more money on a higher end rack or you can buy a Velcro strap to stop the swaying. I also use such straps to keep the wheels from turning in the wind. 2 - Another drawback is the bike tapping against the upright bar - either from swaying or because you've strapped it down tight. My solution is to wrap a piece of foam rubber around the upright and secure with two wire ties. Black rubber and black wire ties and it's hardly noticeable. Pros: 1 - Easy to assemble. 2 - Versatile in that it works with either large or small receiver hitches. 3 - Bang for the dollar is excellent. You will carry two bikes around with no worries. 4 - The top bar can be folded down for daily running around and you can still access your trunk. Not sure how that would work on a hatchback. The pin that holds it in upright or folded position is easy to remove and insert and is completely secure. 5 - If you need to, you can swing the whole rack down to access your trunk or hatchback. Same pin mechanism as for folding down the top bar. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TRTSMG4/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_35 ... show more

  • Good quality, no noticable sway and yet light enough for easy attachment.
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
This is a very high quality hitch bike rack. I don't like driving around with my bike rack on the car when it's not in use so I put it on and take it off a lot. This rack is light enough so that the transfers are not difficult for this 82 yr old. I use it for my Cannondale gravel bike so I can't say how it would handle a heavy ebike (not old enough for those things yet). The components seem of high quality and it's very stable on the hitch with no noticable sway while traveling. I recommend using a rope or Velcro strap as an additional tie down to the rack's center post. I definitely recommend this rack. ... show more

  • You Get What You Pay For
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
A friend who travels extensively carrying their bikes recommended it. It was a good recommendation. We're very happy with it. Not the most expensive, also not the cheapest but a solid economical and practical platform for carrying two road bikes when traveling. Well constructed and durable, very reliable. Folds neatly when not in use and tilts when needed to open rear hatch. The Hitch Mount could use improvement for 2" Receivers but still functions very well. A Hitch Pin with Cotter Pin would be preferable to the bolt through the receiver setup this has. But it works and is fully functional. Just more time consuming to install and remove. Far better than less expensive options and comparable to more expensive options. ... show more

  • Works well... rusts immediately
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
I bought the base Deluxe version which does not have a lock. Since I have a lockable hitch pin I did not need the lockable version. This bike carrier is simple, well designed, easy to assemble and install, and works very well. Folding down the horizontal bars when not in use is easy and so is swinging the vertical post to allow opening the tailgate. The bikes are easy to load and stay stable and secure with a couple bungee cords (not included). The wobble of the post in the hitch receptacle is normal and completely solved with a TOPTOW 64703 Trailer Hitch Anti Rattle Clamp (or similar) which I have for towing. So far this carrier would have earned 5 stars. I've had it installed for a couple of weeks with the car parked outside. This is June in upstate SC so there is no salt on the roads or sea salt or much pollution in the air. We had several days of rain and the carrier already started to rust along the welds between the top bars and the top bracket!! Ridiculous. This is an automotive accessory for outdoor use which should have automotive corrosion resistant coating. Obviously the coating type, thickness and/or process are completely mis-spec'ed or out of control. Either way this aspect earns one (zero) star, that's why the 3 stars combined rating. I am going to treat the weld areas with RustOleum Rust Reformer which I happen to have on hand and which will not be pretty and should not be needed. What a shame. ... show more

  • GREAT Value for the Money GREAT Value for the Money
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
After reading some of the negative reviews I was apprehensive to purchase this product, but I'm glad I did. I'm not looking for anything excessively complex or high-end (just a simple, easy to mount rack to drive my bike to the local forest preserves). This unit fit perfectly into the stock Lexus tow hitch that came with my vehicle, and using a very basic toolkit, the connecting bolt was easily tightened providing a very solid feel. I love the simplicity and ease of assembly this unit offers, and the flexible rubber holders will accommodate a bike with a fatter frame diameter. I'm not sure how so many people have had the multitude of problems they've reported, but I can say if you're on the fence, you won't beat the convenience for the dollar with this rack. And - it doesn't look or FEEL cheaply manufactured so I'm not sure how this can be offered for under $100... I picked up a pack of various length bungee cords to secure the front wheel to prevent it from turning in transport and that worked like a charm. Highly recommend you do this if you're taking some longer trips or planning to off-road at all. ... show more
