And you don't have to remove your bikes to access the back of your truck or SUV, as the rack tilts back for easy lift-gate access and folds out of the way completely when not in use. Also equipped with a no-wobble bolt to keep the rack from moving inside the hitch, the two-bike carrier is colored with a black powder-coated finish. About Allen Bike Racks Started out of founder Dick Allen's garage in 1967, Allen Sports is committed to producing the highest- quality, easiest-to-use bike, parking, and storage racks on the market. Dick Allen, a onetime aerospace engineer, opened Allen Sports after building a prototype bike carrier in his Lincoln, Massachusetts, shop in his free time. The bike enthusiast tested the trunk-mounted carrier--made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding)--on weekend excursions. Shortly afterward, Allen took his design to consumers, moving from local to national sales by 1971. Today, the company owns more than three dozen patents and operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and sells products in more than a dozen countries around the world.

  • Excellent for transporting our MTB
Style: Deluxe Pattern Name: Bike Carrier Color: Silver/Black
Easy assembly, well constructed and will serve our MTB transportation needs really nice. The bikes do swing freely once mounted so ordered Velcro Hook Loop Cable Tie Down Straps, 14" Length x 1" Width, Black (Pack of 10), 9" x 1" and 21" x 1" in order to safely secure the tires to the frame and the frame to the rack to minimize any bike swinging while transporting the bikes. We also have Highland (9008400) Bungee Cord Assortment Jar - 24 Piece for additional stability while the bikes are on the rack. I am sure with all of these additional items, the bikes will be safely secured to the rack and will surely eliminate any free swinging of the bikes, tires and prevent any dings to the bikes as well. Update 7/22: We finally had a chance to take our new MTB on the road with the bike rack working very nicely as expected. I didn't need to use any Bungee Cords but I did use a few velcro straps to secure the bikes to the rack and to each other in order to avoid any swinging and bumping of the bikes to the rack and to each other. These velcro straps are awesome and did their job fantastically. The rack was able to hold the bikes with no issues and the tie down straps that come with the rack do serve their purpose even though they are not the rubber type straps that you will find and see on the more expensive racks. BTW, the MTB we purchased are Diamondback 27.5 Sorrento's with small size for my wife and the large size for me. Both bikes fitted nicely on the racks but you do have to set them up in reverse direction on the rack since the handle bars would prevent you to mount them in the same direction. The anti-movement pin that comes with the rack is effective and did not have any movement of the rack while transporting the bikes. One last thing ... I came up with a "MacGyver" solution to prevent the bike closest to the vertical metal part of the rack from dinging the bike by using some unused quilting batting from my wife's quilting locker which I wrap around the rack's vertical pole and even used a couple of the velcro straps to keep it in place. My "MacGyver" design and solution is working just fine and I don't intend to ever transport the bikes in the rain but if the batting does need to be replaced for whatever reason, I can always raid my wife's quilting locker for some additional batting :-). You just cannot beat the price (we paid $99) of this rack for its functionality and craftsmanship especially if you have limited funds to otherwise purchase a more expensive model and brand. ... show more

  • Solid and Reliable, easy to use and looks good.
The summary is, I really like this rack, and I would recommend it to friends. It is metal, strong, reliable, and gets the job done. I have now had it a few years and still like it. I have driven across the city with a bike on it and never had any problems. Attached this to a curt hitch installed to a 2000 Honda civic. The bike I use it with has 26" wheels and a different bike with 27.5" inch wheels and it works well with both. I have also used it with a road bike with 700c wheels and it works for that too. Pros - easy to bend the unit down and up for trunk access with a simple removable clip-secured pin that is attached the to rack [not easily lost], note, does not go down parallel with ground, it's about a 40 degree angle. - easy to move the arms into up or down position with the same pin method as above. - holds bike securely while host vehicle drives speeds up to 80MPH. Also secure navigating hills and turns. Feels notably more secure that trunk / hatch strap on models, this one is locked into a hitch which is bolted to the car frame. I can drive almost as if the bike and rack were not attached. Once the bike is properly attached, I drive without any worry about the bike or rack. The rear wheel on the bike does come out past the side of the car some but not much, never had a problem with that. - easy to remove from and insert into the hitch. - other vehicles following me very often stay notably further back, which is safer bike rack or not. Cons - buckles which strap bike to rack arms are plastic. However now I have had the rack for a few years and never had a problem with the plastic buckles, would be nice if they were metal. - there is some slight side to side wobble of the rack in the hitch when using the lockable pin. There's no worry of the rack coming out of the hitch, there's just some slight wobble. When driving with or without bike loaded, it is really only notable rarely and at very low speeds. I ordered a hitch clamp to resolve this, since I will not give up use of a lockable pin. The hitch clamp reduced all but a little wobble. The problem with the clamp is, it reduces ground clearance between itself and the ground, so sometimes going over bumps, step grades, etc, the clamp would meet the road and make an interesting sound. I have found grass and dirt stuff on the clamp before, too. So I took off the clamp and went with the wobble. - With a single bike is loaded, the best place for it is the position closest to the vehicle since the frame will be braced against the main pole of the rack. But this does not prevent the bike from swinging the direction opposite the vehicle and then hitting the pole on rebound. This can be possibly be addressed with bungee cords and using part of the cord or a small towel as a layer between the bike and the rack's main pole. I recommend using the towel between the bike and the rack because otherwise the rack will scratch the side of the bike. - The front wheel of the bike can easily turn and contact the vehicle rear bumper when driving. This can be reasonably addressed with a bungee cord attached tightly between the front bike wheel and the bike frame. Highly advised. I think this will happen often unless you address it somehow, because air flow of the vehicle in motion tries to turn the bike's front wheel. Check to see if the bike's front wheel can turn and touch the vehicle rear bumper and if so, devise solution. - The bolt and pin that comes with the rack should work fine in terms of bike transportation, but would be extremely easy to remove and thus steal the rack. Sold separately are locking hitch bolts that would make theft more difficult. Highly advised, since you don't want to come back from an awesome ride and find your bike rack stolen and now, have no easy way to get your bike home on top of that. The photo with the red bungee cord is from me and it shows how I keep the front wheel from turning in the wind and contacting the rear bumper and also how I keep the bike firmly tied to the rack so it doesn't swing out and back, not pictured is the towel I use between the bike and the rack. ... show more

  • Great product for a great price
There are many bike racks out there, and this one was one of the least expensive. I have only one bike, and I am only using it to travel about 5 miles to the river or Marina, so low cost was a major concern. With that said, this unit is surprisingly rugged. When it is mounted, there is very little movement. The bike straps on good and tight, and it performs the job excellently. Assembly is easy. I had it together in about 10 minutes. It is designed for a 1 1/2" receiver, but it has two plates that screw on to make it fit a 2" receiver. There are two bolts, one to fit each receiver size. The only negative that caused me not to rate it 5 stars (although 1 whole star may be a bit harsh) is there is no quick and easy method to attach and remove the rack. You have to unscrew the nut from the receiver bolt each time. I bought a receiver bolt lock to make it easier. All in all, I think this rack is the best bang for the buck. I can't imagine why I would want to purchase a more expensive unit. ... show more
