I purchased this unit for my wife's car. It exceeded my expectations in performance, quality, and ease of use. Lots of neat features built into one package. Setup can be very quick and easy if you want. I wanted a more "professional" installation with all wires hidden and the rear camera routed to the trunk lid near the license plate. That was not difficult, but required patience and a couple hours work to accomplish. I'm glad I took the time to do it that way. The unit comes on automatically when you turn on the ignition, and the back-up help grid pops up automatically when you put the car in reverse. This unit is a great way to add modern back-up camera features to an older car, not to mention the primary security of constant front and rear video recording. The video recording quality is very good. With 170 degree front and 150 degree rear view, only 20 degrees on either side of the car are not being constantly recorded. I installed a 128GB microSD for storage. It is easy to pop out and retrieve data using a laptop when needed. Otherwise, we just forget that the unit is there. Having the 12 inch wide rearview is much better than the standard car width mirror. I discovered another "treat" when I had to fill the car with boxes to help a friend move. Halfway through the trip, I realized that I forgot about the boxes because I still had an unrestricted full rear view while driving. "How is that?!" I wondered. Because the rearview image is coming from the camera on the back of the trunk, not the mirror on the windshield. Pretty Cool!! It did take a day or two of driving to grow accustomed to the extra-wide angle of view toward the rear. Soon enough, you get used to gauging distances and what approaching cars will look like. Again, once you do, you forget about the unit and just use it. The screen brightness is just enough (could even be a bit more) for a bright sunny day if the sun is behind you - other than that we dial it down a little - down more at night. That is the only adjustment we have to ever make to it. We discovered another unexpected benefit recently when we pulled up to a busy intersection to see a couple pee-wee league soccer players dancing wildly trying to get drivers to honk their horns and wave while their Dad embarrassingly tried to get them back into the car. It was hysterical. Then I remembered to hit the "Lock" button which locked the 3 minute video that captured the whole thing. We watched it several times and laughed when we got where we were going. I am very happy with this purchase. In fact, I asked my company to buy one for me to install in my company SUV.

I purchased this camera for my daughter's car - with the way everyone drives these days I wanted to make sure any potential 'incident' would be fully documented. Overall I'm very impressed with the quality and features and have absolutely no complaints considering the affordable price of the product. I was initially a little worried about glare on the screen during daylight; however, I found that once the mirror was adjusted for the driver glare is basically a non-issue. The rear camera provides an excellent field of view and basically eliminates the blind spots. The night-time image quality is pretty good; however, the headlights of distant cars tend to blend into a single 'bright spot' as they approach and have to be within a hundred yards or so before the picture clears up. This is a little less clarity than you would get with a regular mirror, but I wouldn't consider it an issue (just takes some getting used to) and I think the extra field of view definitely makes up for this and creates an overall safer driving experience. Installation took me about 3 hours in a 2008 Honda CR-V (most of that due to my obsessive need to completely hide all of the wiring). I elected to mount the camera inside the rear hatch window which I feel gives the best view when using the camera for a rear-view mirror. I made sure to keep the camera inside the arc of the rear wiper to make sure the view is clear in all weather conditions. I did add a 3rd party power cord that taps the power direction from the fuse block so I didn't have to deal with the bulky plug. One note on installation - the original rear view mirror was a little 'floppy' and adding the increased weight of the digital mirror caused it to droop and not hold it's adjusted position - I ended up adding a piece of rubber between the ball and socket of the original mirror - this is in no way a fault of the AKASO, just be aware that you may have a similar issue. Things I really like: -Quality of the recordings - signs and license plates are clearly visible -GPS speed overlay (helps me keep tab on my daughter's driving habits) -Increased field of view (almost no blind spots) -No need to adjust the mirror position for night driving - because the screen display 'peaks' at a certain point drivers behind you with their high-beams on do not blind you like they do with a normal mirror (it can still wash the image out) -Ease of use - once the initial setup is complete using the mirror is complete seamless - if the electric supply is connected to a switched source the mirror simply powers up with the key and starts recording - there's no need to even touch it during normal driving. -Touch screen is extremely responsive Suggestions for improvement -Add an auto-dimming function for night driving - I prefer to have the screen at full brightness during the day and full dim at night - this is easily done by simply swiping the right side of the screen but it would be nice if the software could calculate this based on the brightness coming in from the front camera. -The cord for the rear camera is permanently attached and has a right-angle plug on the end of it - this right angle plug made it really difficult to pull the cord through some grommets and existing wiring looms when running the cord for the camera. Having either a straight plug or a straight coupler close to the camera where you could disconnect the cord would be a big improvement and make installation much easier. -Include a saddle-type tap connector to connect the rear reverse light wire - I had to make a quick run to my hardware store to pick this up -There are 3 cords that have to be plugged into the mirror (power, rear camera, GPS antenna) - it would be nice to have a single cord coming out of the mirror with a splitter that could be stuffed into the headliner - in my opinion this would make for a much 'cleaner' install. Even with the few 'complaints' I think this is an excellent product and would definitely recommend it!

After having this camera for over a year, I can say it's held up well. The installation and setup are fairly simple, with the hiding of the cable taking the most time. Depending on the vehicle, a single cab truck for example, the cable hiding can be completed in less time. When it comes to the camera itself, I had to improvise as the rearview mirror for my vehicle is not slim. The camera comes with 4 bands that stretch, and they are all the same size. For mirrors that aren't bulky, one band on each side would be able to attach the camera to the rearview mirror. I attached 2 bands together using the wire ties and successfully attached the camera to the rearview mirror. The rear camera can be attached by peeling away the paper to expose the sticky side. It can also be attached using the supplied screws. The ability to see the front camera, rear camera, or both at the same time is a good feature. For vehicles without a backup camera, it helps provide a clear view for safe backing. The video quality is nice and clear during the day and early evening hours, but it's not the greatest for nighttime. It will get the job done, but if there isn't sufficient lighting, the video is grainy. To review any recordings, they can be watched directly on the camera screen which is convenient, but having the ability to also watch on a mobile device would have been great. Saving videos to an external device requires removing the memory card and then inserting it in a memory card reader on a computer, or in a phone or tablet. Overall it's a great camera with a couple of minor inconveniences.

UPDATED Review [1-20-20] (from 2 stars to 5 stars) It is important when a company will back their product(s) with QUALITY SERVICE [after the sale], to ensure that their current (and future) customers are satisfied. AKASO is one of those companies. They reached out to me [via email] to address my concerns with this Dash Cam Mirror and support help. The company representative [Jenny] that I communicated with went above and beyond my expectations to make sure that my purchase was not in vain. Their are still things to be done to make the product easier to use and setup [i.e. the manual text and directions] but I believe they will do this with future product updates and changes. Customer service is FANTASTIC. My dash cam mirror unit is still working great as of this UPDATE. Long term quality and reliability is still on going. PROS: - Good diagrams (in the installation guide book) on how to hide the rear camera, GPS, and power wires to the unit - Options for Parking guard and G-Sensor - Tech customer support was fast in replying to requested help, however follow up customer assistance was better - Product description was great when describing the unit. - Fantastic video recording of 2 cameras (rear and front) at the same time. - Mirror Image on camera that allows you to read a license plate instead of seeing it backward on a conventional mirror - The option to turn off the video display, and use as a regular rear view mirror. The cameras will continue to record when you use the dash cam this way. - Date, Month & Year display options for a variety of countries. - Attached to the right vehicle (and in the best place) the rear camera can help with blind spot monitoring as it has a "wide Angle" field of view. - The rear camera is water proof, however be careful of where you mount it [see photo 3]. It does protrude out a little and I would be careful about going to a local car wash that has brushes. It could break the camera off of its hinges. If mounted on the inside of the vehicle you will not need to worry about this. Also keep in mind that if mounted on the outside of your vehicle, water (may snow) droplets may accumulate on the camera lens causing the view in the mirror to be obscured. It is best to lightly wipe if off prior to driving if you had a very rainy (or snowy) day. CONS: - The unit is basically a very shiny mirror and as stated above can be used as one. When the video display is on, it can be a little too reflective as to not being able to see the video for the camera(s). The night vision (at least from the rear camera) can appear to be grainy at times, but not a game changer. - Settings Display Layout Screen [see 1st photo]. The version, GPS Test, Video Encode & Frequency options should be placed elsewhere or removed. The GPS test is not really a test. It is only to show the satellite strength and your current location in Longitude and Altitude. You are not actually testing anything as You cannot change the results displayed. The version option only shows you the current software version of the unit and you cannot update it or change it. The Video Encode is only for the codec format of the mp4 video that it recorded. Most video players will play the standard H.264. but you can change this to H.265 the newest codec. Their is no need to do this if the old codec works. The Same for the Frequency option. 60hz should be adequate for most videos. Lastly [on the display layout]. As explained above some options can be eliminated or moved elsewhere; if you notice the " vertical slide" bar to the far right it is supposed to move the main display up to reveal more options [see photo 2]. I had extreme difficulty trying to move this and thought it was not to be used. Then I tried the "left" side of the screen and it worked. Keep in mind this was NOT explained in the (very small) text in the manual). It was trial and error by the the user. On this second screen, I would suggest useless options should be placed and moving the "Time Zone and Speed Unit" to the main display because they will be the most important items adjusted when you install the unit. - Setting Your Time & Zone was not fully explained in the manual. Even the PDF online (on their website) does not give a detailed explanation about setting your time. To actually set the time correctly you will need to know your UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) zone. Either PST, EST, PDT, EDT etc, if you live in countries that change their clocks a couple of times per year as they do in the U.S. I experienced a 1-2 hour error after setting my date and time in the main display because I initially did not set my time zone because I could not find it in the display. IT WAS AT THE BOTTOM. Even using this option, it lists your time zone as: UTC+7 UTC+8 or UTC-7 etc.... You will need to know your current UTC [AFTER] setting your time. You will need to do this again in 3-7 months depending upon if you your country practices daylight savings time. It will not change automatically. - Tech Support: Used "Canned" responses and the support tech's knowledge of the product model I purchased was lacking. When I could not configure my time (losing 1-2) on the clock display, I sent my unit back as defective and was offered a replacement. I had emailed tech support and within 7 hours they replied. I was very happy on the quick response. I had to confirm my purchase (with an order number from Amazon) and I sent them the information. After confirming my purchase, they sent the "canned" response of concern for my issue and wanted to help. However when I explained "in exact detail" what my issue was, they replied with (again) a "canned" or automated response of instructions that made no sense. I mean, the description of the instructions was to unplug the GPS wire to the unit and plug it in again, then I will see the option to change my time and time zone. When I replied that it did not work to solve my issue, they stated to unplug my rear camera wire and plug it in again. If that didn't work they wanted me to plug my dash cam into the charger. WHAT CHARGER??? I emailed back explaining that this dash cam did not come with a charger and it appeared that the tech was not very knowledgeable about this unit as he/she stated if that did not work to send the unit back for a replacement because they had not seen this issue before. I asked to close my support ticket due to 2 or 3 suggestions and then feeling they let me down by offering to replace the unit instead of trying to understand the issue. After this frustration a customer support rep contacted me (as detailed above) to resolve my concerns. In closing, I finally stumbled upon how to set the time and resolved my own issues. However I believe when dealing with tech support their appears to be a loss in translation when communicating by email. I did not use the phone option so I am not sure if they support U.S. English speaking techs. They did email me again to offer additional help, and that is when Jenny got involved. In the long run I do believe this dash cam will be great, but a better [comprehensive] installation manual with larger text and getting tech support that are more knowledgeable about the unit they are trying to assist you with when using email. I have UPDATED this review and GIVEN back ALL THE stars. This is mainly due to the CUSTOMER SERVICE after the sale. This was a great purchase because they want satisfied customers.

This is my first dash cam and I'm very please with my decision to get the DL12. I was looking for a dash cam with great camera quality, GPS and shock sensors, good night vision and great price. The DL12 haven't disappointed in any of the features I was looking for. These are some of the highlights aster 6 month of use: Pros: 1. Easy setup, almost plug and play. But it took me like 2 hours to install the rear camera and GPS, since I want it to look like a profesional install with hidden cables. 2. Camera quality is as advertise. Really excelente quality and resolutions. For the rear camera, the nigh vision is great!! and with the automatic bright level control, I can see rear cars very well without the bright lights been a inconvenience. It's like it has two rear camera, on the day a full color camera and on nights a full night vision infrared camera in grey colors :) 3. During the dawn/sunset transition with the sun on your back, It handlers the sun glare very well adjusting the rear image accordingly so I can always see rear vehicules, even when the sun is right behind me. 3. Ease touch interface on the dash cam and very intuitive. 4. Shock and GPS work great. 5. Can be use as a regular rear view mirror, turning the screen off. Even turn off the screen, it still continue to save front/rear video on the sd card. Cons: 1. Sometimes I notice there are recording gaps. I thought it was that when the shock sensor kits in it was saving the recording on the protected folder, but that wasn't the case. Mostly happens when driving on bumping roads or off road. 2. The interface doesn't have a manual video saving option to a protected area. If there is a video that I want to save to the protected folder so it doesn't get overridden, I need to take out the SD Card so I can save it on my laptop. I do this, because I use my dash cam as also for recording an off road trip and there are scenery I'll like to save before it gets overridden.

Let me start out by saying that I do in fact own this camera. I bought it here on Amazon. Saying that this thing is awesome!!! It's one of those things that just works. Does what it's supposed to. I didn't even know these things existed, I had used a different type of dash cam with a 2 to 3-in screen on it that had a rear camera that came with it. When I saw that these things existed I knew I had to have one. The picture quality is second to none it is just amazing! I drive a Kia Sedona and the mirror fit snugly and evenly over my existing mirror. I did have all the wiring and rear view camera installed professionally by my local car stereo shop. That cost more than the camera itself. Lol. Everything about this camera feels classy, it doesn't have that cheap feeling to it and I cannot get over how clear the pictures are on it The only problem I have now is, I'm disabled, and I had originally posted the backup camera and a spot that will now have to be moved because I installed a scooter carrier on my car and it's blocking the vision of the camera. Beyond that this thing is chocked full of settings. The GPS is awesome definitely hook up that module it will keep up with your miles per hour and real time location. The clock on it can be set to 12 or 24-hour time. The loop recording works just fine their g sensor can be a little sensitive so you have to set it to your liking. But if it does sense something it will start recording and it will lock that recording. The next time you go to start your car it will give you a notification if you would like to view it or erase it or save it. Absolutely love love love the rear view camera. If connected right, tied into the rear backup light, when you put the car in reverse the reverse lines from the parking assistant pops up. You can manually move the reverse camera up and down or you can slightly move the image up and down on the screen itself. You'll definitely want a constant power supply going to this bad boy I suggest hardwiring it in it just gives it a cleaner look. As a function you can choose between looking at the front camera, the back camera, or a split screen of the front and back at the same time on the display. All this by swiping on the display. The night vision is excellent. The only small thing, miniscule thing, is that the SD card is a little difficult to get in. I suggest definitely installing the SD card into the camera before it being mounted. The camera comes with a 7 m cable for the backup camera. If you need a longer cable for your application you can email the company and they will send you one for free. At least that was the case for me. As for customer service, top notch again, replies every time! Overall at this time, for this price, there isn't a better system out there for the money! All Akaso products I have purchased have been quality.

I went with this Akaso DL12 model after comparing it to several other mirror dash cameras here. In the parking mode it records both the front and rear and a lot of other competitors don't have this feature. Package: The product came in a nice solid box with all items properly secured inside the box. Included are: main mirror camera, rear view camera with mounting bracket, separate GPS module, power supply cable, double-sided tapes, screws, mini wire holders, orange plastic trim/panel remover, booklet, 4 rubber straps to mount the mirror camera. The main mirror camera is built well and can be used as a mirror too if the unit is turned off. Also, the mirror does have a dark tint to it. The rear cameras seems to be good built as well, can't really say if it's water proof as I installed mine inside the vehicle. Installation: It was easy to install and took about 30-40 minutes for me. I watched a couple of videos online before installing the unit. I followed the instructions in the booklet and I have to say it worked out well. The rear camera wire is long enough for even a large SUV. The front camera is adjustable by hand so you can align it to your preference. I wasn't getting a good GPS connecting in the beginning because I had hid the GPS unit inside the rain sensor box on the windshield, but once I installed it on the A-piler I began to get immediate connect to the GPS every time. There is a small delay in detecting the speed but I guess that is normal considering the GPS satellites are moving as well. MicroSD card: Get a good quality microSD with 64GB or more and with a U3 rating. Use a dull toothpick to insert or remove the card into the unit. The unit only accepts microSD cards only. Daily use: The device automatically comes on when you start the car and starts recording immediately. There is a protective film on the mirror that some buyers have mentioned to remove to get a clearer image on the screen, but I feel it might serve as a protector or anti-glare. I'm not really sure about that as there was no mention of it in the instructional booklet. I noticed a lot of glare of my back seats in the mirror, but after adjusting the angle a bit the glare was reduced. Take note that the mirror has an the view adjustment slider on the left side and the brightness slider on the right side. The split screen is the full frame that is being recorded and while the front and rear view modes display only a part of the full frame depending on how you adjust the viewing bar. Initially I was getting a yellow bar running across the bottom of the screen unit, and that was because I had set the G-senor to low, and that was triggering the device to save the video every time I was on a bumpy road. I suggest setting that to high. There is that typical glare off the vehicle glass visible in both cameras and the display can look slightly blurry if your windows are dirty. Overall I am happy with the product and I bought it to protect myself in insurance claims.

I dislike reviews without experience of the product but I'm going to get this up now and update later. I installed this kit yesterday and made my first commute with it today. This is not my first dashcam but it is my first with a rear view camera and mirror replacement, so I don't have a lot to compare to. Installed on my 2015 Golf TDI. First note, the install guide is very basic and does not have much advice so I made extensive use of Youtube. Especially of note, the rear camera "position 2" which is recommended in the manual (which is the position directly over the license plate on the rear bumper) seemed tricky to pull off. I opted to install inside the rear windshield (position 1 in the manual) because all the wiring info I found on my vehicle seemed easier to get at with minimal damage. The instructions recommend a cabling route along the side of the vehicle which would be the obvious way but I fished mine through the ceiling. I saw some reviews saying the install is quite complicated but it really isn't. 1 long cable runs to the back for the rear camera, 1 shorter cable from the mirror to a 12v cigarette lighter, and 1 easy run for the GPS which can pretty much go anywhere. The most intimidating part of the install for me was splicing into the reverse light wiring because I haven't cut wiring on my nice new car, but it ended up being fine, just stripped a small segment, wrapped in the new wire and sealed with heat shrink tubing. I should have soldered but I didn't. I was pleased with the length of cabling for my vehicle. I was actually able to run the power cable to the back of the car to use the 12v in the back and leave my front ones free for other use. Obviously a bigger vehicle might not have that option but if you have a rear power jack and a smaller vehicle I encourage you to think about it. As for features and software setup, it's pretty simple. You really need to look over the manual because some key controls are done with swiping and aren't covered in the quick setup guide. You pretty much just pop in an SD card and it's ready to go, though you'll want to know what the settings do. Aside from the sound and video basics, you can set the sensitivity of the shock sensor that automatically locks footage at the time of an impact. I'm not positive but I think that's roughly what the parking guard does too. You can set the length of your recording loop, but I wasn't able to figure out how to turn off looping and it only gives you 3 options for length of loop. I put a 256gb card in mine so I would prefer a longer loop. Not a big deal though. One setting I haven't figured out yet is how I want the "screen saver" which turns the screen off after a set amount of time. I thought this would only happen when stationary so I turned it on but today my screen turned off every 3 minutes while driving because I had it on. When I had it off the screen stayed on for hours while parked so as of now it seems like I have to turn the screen saver off and remember to manually turn off the screen. That's pretty annoying considering the GPS integration can tell when the vehicle is in motion. Quality-wise the front camera quality is pretty impressive. It's also quite easy to adjust so that you have a good view of the mirror and the camera has a good view of the road. The rear camera quality is obviously lower in resolution and also because of my placement, loses quality due to having the glass between it and the road. Right now I'd say it's serviceable. A car will have to be pretty close to get a license plate number from it I think. It's also harder to adjust. You really want to get the rear camera right where you want it before you lock in. I'd advise using the included butterfly sticky pads to get your placement right and then drill to get it to stay. My butterfly pad did not stick well. Not sure if there was armor-all on the plastic or what but I can't imagine installing without drilling. The LCD screen seems ok. Touchscreen functions work well once you know the controls and if anything are a little more sensitive than I'd want due to how many times I bumped it while setting up. Now that it's set up I'm glad my touches register easily. The view...it's really wide and seems quite bright/washed out. It's an adjustment vs driving with a normal mirror, that's for sure. Vehicles I see as being behind me a ways are actually just to my left or right and would hit me if I changed lanes, so there is definitely some adjustment required to drive with this new view. I am thrilled that I'll have that kind of visibility in my recordings though and can see the value of having the wide field of view when driving after I've learned to get used to it. Overall, the value is insane for this setup. I got mine for $90 front and back, 12" model. Setups I've seen at retail have been much more expensive with fewer features. Ease of install is what I expected. If you want easier you'll need wireless. One thing I wish I'd gotten in the box for installation is so way to hide the cabling at the windshield. You may or may not need to channel your cables there. I didn't have any factory electronics to my mirror so there is not plastic to hide around. This is a minor issue and probably not something any kits include. Do your research before installation but at least after one day I'd highly recommend this kit.
