  • Replacing after almost 4 years
In less than 4 years, I am replacing the resin because the water pressure is very low. Even after upping the rate of regeneration from 12 days to 8 days and doing multiple regenerations over a course of a few days, the pressure remains low. This is exactly the same issue that the original resin had when I replaced it but that didn't happen until 8 years of use. I use Potassium Chloride but, from what I have researched, it should have lasted longer with Potassium Chloride than using Salt. ... show more

Took a while to arrive. The box was a little beat up but the contents were in great condition; there was a bag inside of a bag. Used a large funnel to load the tank. The old resin was mushy; it would disintegrate between my fingers. With the old resin, the water started out salty after each recharge and the softness only lasted a few days. After replacing the resin, good as new. The old resin was a little more than 12 years old. I was told that a typical residential unit should last about 8 years. Got my moneys worth out of this one. So far so good. The system recharged last night for the first time since replacing the resin and the water was soft and not salty. Again, so far so good. It wasn't hard to replace the resin. I set the unit into bypass. Removed the clamps at the neck. Lost a little water on the garage floor, but was ready with a few old towels. Used a stick to support the tank valve head. A couple of the old O rings were brittle and broke so I got replacements online. Took about a week for the replacement O rings to arrive. It was a two man job to carry the tank out, empty, clean and reload. My unit did not have or need a gravel bed according to the manufacturer, so reloading the resin was a breeze with out the tank tube. Inserted the tank tube with the tank on its side to get it all the way down. Installed the new O rings. Applied the supplied lubricating gel to the O rings. Reattached the tank. Turned the water back on. Soft water again! Saved a bundle not replacing the whole thing. New water softener was about $700. Spent about $125. Plumber wanted $200 plus parts (resin and rings about $150). ... show more

  • A Terrific Investment in Our Home!
When my wife and I bought this house, it came with a water softener, which I was excited about. However, when we would out the water softener in line, the water flow in the house would drop to a trickle. We thought the softener was done for as it was several years old. We didn't have the money for a new one, so we just took the softener offline and forgot about it. . At some point I looked a bit further into it. I think it was when we really got tired of the white calcification on all our fixtures and on our "clean" dishes coming out of the dishwasher. I found that the most common cause of our water flow problem was old resin in the water softener. The resin is what actually softens the water. Over time the resin breaks down. Our softener was well past the lifespan of the resin. Thanks to YouTube I found out how to replace the resin and for about $100 and a few hours labor we had a softener that literally worked like new. Las Vegas has some of the hardest water in the country, so the difference has been remarkable. We now have softer skin, cleaner clothes and nicer looking dishes and fixtures. It was well worth the time and money. Before you give up on your softener, search for how to replace your resin, then find out how much you need. You don't need any special tools. The funnel you will often see in YouTube videos may be helpful, but we did just fine without it. You do need a little upper body strength, but borrow a neighbor/friend if needed. Buy them a pizza and you're still way ahead. :-) ... show more

  • Excellent results for iron
The bag that I received said that it was INDION 225 NaF and when I looked that up it was described as: "a strongly acidic cation exchange resin containing sulphonic acid groups." So, I was concerned about the acidity since I am treating well water and my water was slightly acidic to begin with at 6.5 and iron had increased to 1.0 ppm and causing staining and taste issues. I dumped my existing resin which was over 10 years old and replaced with this resin yesterday. Today I tested the water and found that iron was at zero, pH actually rose to 7 and Hardness is less than 25ppm. So, I am very happy with this product and will buy again although don't understand the labeling issues not being as described in the Amazon listing. I learned that this doesn't store well and that you should use up the entire bag. I'll need 1/2 cu ft to replenish and trying to find a compatible product at that size. ... show more

  • Excellent!
I purchased this from AmericanWaterSolutions and it was shipped to me in two days!!! I was impressed. It came in a nice bag as shown in my picture. I didn't understand how the blue spout thing on the bag worked so I just it off. I filled the resin tank, put the water softener all back together and now I have water pressure again. I determined the loss of water pressure was due to gelling up of and/or breakdown of the resin so instead of replacing the whole water softener, I went this route. Locally the resin was between $165 and $200 per cubic foot so this was a great deal at $85.27 total. I followed the instructions on this website[...], filled the resin to the same height as it previously was and used the instruction booklet that came with the water softener to guide me in hooking everything back up. It has been nearly 10 years since we bought the Kenmore 300 series water softener so we'll see how long this fix will last. My resin tank is an 8x40 and I used nearly this entire bag of resin. ... show more

  • This stuff works!
My softener was only letting a trickle of water through. I guess the resin "slimes" when it's exhausted, or soaks up too much iron. I googled my head off and came to the conclusion that I needed to replace the resin. My house was built in 01 so it seemed like it was about time. The job flat-out sucks... I got everything apart and wondered if I was in over my head... Getting the head off the tank was a real chore and took some creative tools. After all was said and done, the work really paid off. We'll see how this resin performs over the long-haul, but I'm very optimistic! It took 2-3 salt/regen cycles to get the water back to where we expected it. Hope it works for you too! ... show more
